James Thomas Principal

Dear Parents, Learner Achievement The Ministry of Education recently released ‘role based’ 2013 NCEA statistics. This is where a school’s pass rate is calculated by comparing the number who passed with the number on the school role at that particular level on 1 July 2013. It means learners who leave in the second half of the year (for whatever reason) and any who withdrew (or are withdrawn) will decrease the pass rate. Our results in comparison to other similar schools are very positive, especially in Level One and Two. Level One: 87.6% (2

nd of 66 state, co-ed schools in the Greater

Auckland region, ie: Counties to Kaitaia)

Level Two: 83.6% (6th of 66)

Level Three: 74.7% (9th of 66)

The Diary of Anne Frank Wow – what can I say. We have received considerable positive feedback about our dramatic production, The Diary of Anne Frank. Those who were able to attend will understand. Congratulations to all those involved.

ANZAC Our Prefects, who were excellent ambassadors, joined Mr Howarth and I at the community service run by the Silverdale RSA on 25 April. We have also had our annual ANZAC Assemblies attended by veterans (even of WW2). The veterans are very impressed by the attitude of your sons and daughters, and the respect they show our visitors and the occasion.

Cross country Last Friday we had our school cross country and fun run. Energy and encouragement were present in large measure. Well done to all those involved. Barbara Kendall - 5-time Olympian - Gold, Silver and Bronze Medallist. Here’s an opportunity not to be missed. On Friday 23 May we are honoured to have Barbara Kendall to share at an interactive presentation; to learn how to play to your strengths and work on your weaknesses and develop skills to help you in all aspects of life. More detailed information on the following pages.

Lighting A little later in the year, there will be a significant upgrade to the external lighting of the College. All the best for a positive term Kia Kaha

It was a pleasure to represent the College again in a visit to Ulei Junior Secondary School in Vanuatu. The school appreciated the opportunity to mix and converse with native speakers of English and were very grateful for the text books and others resources we were able to leave with them.

Our learners gained in many ways. James Thomas See pictures over page...

ANZAC Day The 25

th of April became a day of dismal.

Our men from New Zealand were to fight in the war. They travelled by boat, to a strange foreign land.

Turkey is its name, home to the Gallipoli Campaign

After a long tiring journey, land was in view. But the Turks were prepared, who made it ashore? It was very few.

The sea glowed a ruby red. A glistening blanket made of the dead.

With not much amo and very few men.

We did not stand a chance, we were soon trapped in their pen. The soldiers badly injured, all we could do was comfort them. Because death was coming soon, mounting over the horizon.

Very few men returned home, in shock and in pain.

Some recovered bad news, uncovering a deadly page. Bodies of the loved ones, will never be recovered.

They remain where they died, amongst the poppy pastures.

Anzac Campaign When the Anzacs went to war, They were losing from the start. Their ships were off course, The Anzacs were doomed to fail. They came upon the beach in waves, Getting shot down row by row. Out of 200 men who came, Only 20 of them lived. The Anzacs tried to rest, And eat while they could. They tried not to worry, For worrying did no good. The campaign lasted over 5 months, Over 120,000 dead. In the end what was left of them, Was hundreds of unmarked graves. Becky Goodchild 7FRA

ANZAC Assemblies A fine group of Prefects joined me and Mr Howarth at the community service run by the Silverdale RSA on 25 April. We have also had our annual ANZAC Assemblies attended by veterans (even of WW2).

International Department

Term 2 International Learners This term, four new international learners have started at the College. We would like to offer a big warm welcome to these learners. Our new learners are from Thailand, Korea, Brazil and France. From left to right: Muneploy (Penaorie) Sanguanphan (from Thailand), Jeongmin (Merry) Lee (from Korea), Marina Dos Santos Barros (from Brazil) and Pierre-Baptiste Gourmain (from France).

On Thursday 8 May, ten Year 10 girls boarded the Spirit of New Zealand for a five day voyage. We started off in the Auckland Viaduct and sailed to Waiheke Island and then continued on to the Coromandel and various bays in between. On the ship we really enjoyed the company of thirty other students from South Otago, Dunedin and Tuakau and by the end of the trip became close friends. Whilst on board the ship, we competed against the three other schools in many different competitions and activities. These activities included 6.30 am swims in the freezing cold ocean, deck games, putting up sails, night watch, raft racing and beach competitions. We only managed to set the sails two out of the five days because the weather was too calm. On one of the days we sailed, we got the opportunity to learn how to tack the ship. Overall it was a really great experience and an awesome chance to meet new friends. We would highly recommend this opportunity to anyone who gets the chance to go on the Spirit of New Zealand. Here’s a list of the ten of us who went: Tayla Flatt, Trinee Tennent, Emma Clarke, Ashley Cahill, Tia Neale, Lydia Spencer, Emma Hamilton, Tessa Weston, Daisy Statham, Rose Peddie. Rehearsals are underway and we will be competing in Week 9. Year 10 Drama - “Throughout Term 1, our Year 10 Drama class had been working on some clowning performances. We worked in groups to create a short clowning skit. We used basic drama techniques such as mime, slapstick comedy and learnt how to improvise. On Tuesday 6 May, a few groups went to two pre-schools near the College, (Fame Preschool and ABC), to perform our clowning skit. Before we left, we got into our costumes and applied our clowning makeup. We were chauffeured by Year 13 Drama learners there and back. As you can see in a few of the photos (over the page), everyone had a fantastic time. Caitlin O’Brien, Sofija Townsend and Emily-Jane Cull.

Year 7 & 8 Hockey Team Our mixed hockey team played their first game of hockey on Monday 12 May against Pinehurst. What an awesome start to the season, what a team effort! For some it was their first ever game and others built on previous lessons. All of the team played their hearts out and it was great to see so many chases and clever passing, great defence and great attacking plays. It was very tense on the side line while you “peppered” the goal and finally one got past the goalie. Yes - fantastic first game! There will have been a few sore muscles in the morning. To Dale (coach), great work getting the kids so ready! Whangaparaoa 1 - Pinehurst 0 Goal to Sam Creevey
