From the French Room

Students in Year 6 have been learning about La Francophonie. La Francophonie is made up of French-speaking countries, but also other countries who are members of the International Organisation of La Fran-cophonie (IOF) but do not have French as their official or main language. Students

have learnt that there are approximately 270 million French speakers around the world. They have also learnt about the influence of France on food, culture, language, clothing etc. Students applied themselves and delivered work of a high quality, including making an informative presentation. Well done to all Year 6 students for their hard work and enthusiasm. Bravo! Madame Brandenburg French Teacher

LAPATHON REMINDER The WLPS Annual Lapathon will be held on the School Oval on Friday, May 26, from 2.15am. Sponsorship forms have been sent home with your child, or you can download one from the school’s website. Please supervise your children so that they are not collecting money from strangers. Support should only be sought from family members, friends and neighbours.

Sponsorship forms have to be returned to school on the day of the lapathon.

MUSIC NOTES Welcome to Term 2 of Music at West Leeming Primary School.

SINGFEST! Year 3 students from M2 and M3 will be performing at this event on May 24th being held at the Melville Civic Centre. The concert begins at 12.45pm with our students singing first. Everyone is welcome to come and there is usually a gold coin donation at the door. Don’t be late!

CHOIR, BAND AND STRING ENSEMBLES: It is great to see that most students are coming 5 minutes early to assist with the tuning of instruments and the setup of the Music Room. This allows these groups to begin on time, making the most of the rehearsal period.

CHANGE OF REHEARSAL TIME FOR BAND: We are going to begin at 8.20am on Tuesdays just to get in more rehearsal time. Students need to practice band pieces at home along with the music set by their instrumental teachers.

RECITAL NIGHT: PUT THIS DATE INTO YOUR DIARIES---FRIDAY 18th AUGUST 6.30pm in the Performing Arts Centre at Leeming Senior High School. This wonderful night, for ALL instrumental students, band and string ensemble, will be in Term 3. This is a very exciting time for our music students! More information to come later.

FOUND: ½ size violin left in the Out of School room. No current violin student has claimed this so if you know anything about it, please let me know.

I have had a few excited students come up to me to say that they experienced our wonderful Western Australian Symphony Orchestra ( WASO) last weekend when it performed the original music score to a Harry Potter film. This is such a great way to introduce your child the magic of the orchestra and its many instruments. There is another one planned for November so book NOW. Keep an eye open for its cushion concerts which are designed for children up to 6-7 years old.

Happy music making, Rosemary Mathie Music Specialist

Staff Carpark Please note: The Staff carpark is for staff use only.

We request that parents respect and and abide by the rules regarding the Staff carpark. There has been a considerable number of parents entering the Staff carpark to pick up or drop off their children. This not only causes problems for staff entering the carpark, but it is also a safety hazard with cars backing out at a very busy time.

In the interests of child safety, parents are not to use the Staff carpark to pick up or drop off children at any time.

ACROD Parking There are three easy access parking bays within our immediate area - in the Junior carpark, Staff carpark and Council carpark. These are NOT to be used to KISS AND DROP. Please respect the needs of our students and the whole community.

Skateboards on School Grounds We have had complaints of some high school students zipping around on their scooters outside the classrooms. Please note that all skateboards, scooters and bikes are not to be used when on school premises. They should only be carried or wheeled through the school.

If your child uses one, it must be secured in the bike racks with an appropriate locking device for the day. Protective safety equipment is encouraged at all times.

Dogs on School Grounds During school hours, dogs are not permitted on the school grounds under the Department of Education’s Regulation 2000. . This includes the oval and also applies to dogs on leashes. Those families walking to school with their dog are requested to leave the dog at the school boundary.

HELPERS NEEDED The library would appreciate assistance to cover some books on Tuesday morning after school drop off. Tea and coffee will be provided. Thank you. Christine Willis, Library Officer

NUT MINIMISATION POLICY We have children throughout the school who have the po-tential to suffer Anaphylaxis. This is a sudden, severe and potentially fatal allergic reaction to certain foods, especially peanuts and nut products.

It is important to understand that even traces of nuts can cause Anaphylaxis. The sensitivity is such that these children can have a reaction from just touching another child’s hands or sharing toys and equipment with others who have been eating peanuts or nut products.

We ask for your cooperation in minimising the risk to these students by following these simple steps: • Please don’t give your children foods containing nuts or peanuts • Be aware many sweets and biscuits contain traces of these nuts – eg. Peanut butter, Nutella, certain muesli bars, chocolate bars and biscuits • Please encourage thorough washing of hands and face with a damp cloth if your child has eaten these foods before coming to school • Please avoid nuts and peanuts in birthday cakes that may be brought to school • Please be aware of the dangers of cross contamination Children have been taught not to share or accept foods from others and this is a school rule. The school’s aim is to assist the students in the avoidance of allergies.

Our school Nut Minimisation Policy is in line with the De-partment of Education’s Duty of Care Policy and Emergency Response Plans are in place for all activities we conduct. We have to date received excellent support from parents and classmates in managing to reduce the risks for these students. We look forward to the same ongoing assistance and understanding on this matter.

Further information regarding Anaphylaxis can be found at www.allergyfacts.org.au and www.allergy.org.au

National Walk Safely to School Day Friday, May 19 2017 Well it’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking about walking! Now in its 18th year, National Walk Safely to School Day is a campaign and annual event when all primary school children, their parents and carers are encouraged to walk and commute regularly and safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment.

Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine. You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by: Walking with them the whole way to school If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop

and get on at the next stop If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from

the school and walk the rest of the way.

Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.

Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday May 19! For more information, visit www.walk.com.au

National Reconciliation Week Each year National Reconciliation Week, from May 27 to June 3, celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.

The dates that bookend the week are significant milestones in the reconciliation journey.

May 27—Marks the anniversary of Australia’s most success-ful referendum and a defining event in our nation’s history. The 1967 referendum saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census.

3 June—Commemorates the High Court of Australia’s land-mark Mabo decision in 1992, which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land—a relationship that existed prior to colonisation and still exists today. This recognition paved the way for land rights or Native Title.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2017 is ‘Let’s take the next steps’

This National Reconciliation Week we reflect on 2 significant anniversaries in Australia’s reconciliation journey - 50 years since the 1967 referendum and 25 years since the historic

Mabo decision.

The week reminds us that big changes take persistence and courage, so let’s celebrate together and take the next steps.
