U3A's General Meeting:

Mid-September - TBA

The organizing of the 30th Anniversary

Showcase 2018 held on Wednesday 16th May

went quite smoothly in spite of the few hiccups

on the day itself.

All those members who arrived from 7.30 am

did a great job in helping set up chairs and

tables around the room in readiness for the

class members to arrange their wares. The

same is to be said of those who stayed back at

the end of the day returning all furniture to its

original storage place – and this includes the

lady who had fun with the big V-broom

sweeping the massive floor! Thank you one

and all, much appreciated.

The MC, Doug Kennedy, certainly filled in the

gaps with his kind of wit (and clear voice!) on

brief details of each act as they came up.

The knife for the cutting of the cake was held

with four individual hands – our President

Marvin Summers, Councillor Dawn Crichlow,

Founding Member Myra Dawson and Longest

Serving Tutor Graciela Castle.

Many classes are to be commended for

putting on a great display portraying what their

classes are about.

Apart from the three tutors who apologized

beforehand, it was a disappointment of others

who did not make the effort to be part of the

Showcase.

The active class performers – all four of them, Tai Chi,

Yoga B, Yoga Chair, Tap dancers – had the room at a

standstill, and some members have since made

complimentary comments on their performance.

Well done ladies!

All Tutors were presented with a Certificate of Appreciation

for their role in/with U3A Gold Coast Inc. and all Volunteer

Receptionists and Office Workers (non-committee) received

the same for their part in various roles.

From here onwards, there will be no more ‘disruptions’ to

Class Time Tables, at least till September’s General Meeting

– and it won’t be held on a Wednesday!

Don’t forget:

July break starts Monday 2 July to Friday 27July

Semester 2 starts Monday 30 July 2018

Like father, like son, I made my eldest daughter play

the Flute, middle daughter play the Sax, and son

play the Drums.

I still love to sit and play at full moon, creepy, dirge

music on the keyboard at midnight.

So, now I am happy to steer and

guide interested budding

musicians of any age, into a fun

instrument called the Ukulele.

The U3A music group has multiple instruments

including Guitar, Baritone and Ukulele. If you play

the spoons, saw, gumleaf, bones, comb, bottles or

other fun gear, why not join Robert Moore, our Guitar

Tutor, and we can jam together.

”I still love to sit and play at full moon, creepy dirge music on the keyboard at midnight”

I was born in Brisbane and moved to Sydney at the

age of 4. Father was a Preacher (Evangelist). Later

he was ordained as a Congregational Minister, then

Uniting Church. So, all of us 4 kids had to learn an

instrument and play in the Cronulla

Congregational Church.

I was the eldest, so I learned the piano, gospel

songs, and got honors in the Australian Music

Examination Board (AMEB) exams.

After my marriage in 1971 and 3 kids later, we saw

the light and moved to the Gold Coast in 1990,

where I played the electronic organ at the Nerang

Uniting Church.

Annual General Meeting and 30th Anniversary Morning Tea

Meet Gladys

Never too old to learn

Gladys, at 97, is our inspiration.

She never fails to get to her 500 Cards and Cribbage

Classes every week and it is a delight to see her walk

through the door for a cup of tea in plenty of time

before class starts.

Her class mates reveal that Gladys is on top of her

game and keeps you alert and on your toes.

Gladys shared some of her life experiences over a

cuppa the other morning and we found out she was

born in Streatham in the Southwest of England.

Her husband wanted to come to Australia and

brought her and son and daughter over on, what

was called then, the Ten Pound Scheme.

They went to Sydney first, then moved to Brisbane

and came to the Gold Coast in 1966.

She has 5 grandsons and 1 granddaughter, as well

as 9 great grandchildren spread around but her son

and daughter live close by on the Gold Coast.

Gladys is a respected and admired member of our U3A group.

U3A Walk - Saturday 12 May By Norma Hutchinson

The destination of our walk was the Art Centre at Bundall.

Our group of six caught the bus at TAFE in

Scarborough Street and travelled to the stop on

Ferry Road, opposite the Brickworks

shopping complex.

From there we travelled on foot, through the

grounds of The Southport School (TSS), where a

large sporting event was taking place.

TSS is a huge school which was founded in

1901. It has many impressive buildings and

enormous grounds, part of which run alongside

the Nerang River, surely an advantage to their

strong rowing crews.

We emerged onto traffic busy Ferry Road, but

our route soon put us back by the river pathway

where we continued almost to the Chevron

Island bridge.

We passed under the bridge and continued the short distance to the Arts Centre park, a well-known leisure spot.

A point of interest at present is the recently

constructed amphitheatre, the top of which can be

accessed by way of a pathway of large slabs of

rock, reminiscent to one of the group, of the Great

Wall of China. Of course, we all climbed it and

most of us suffered next day from aching

thigh muscles.

Such strenuous exercise called for a well-earned

break. The Arts Centre cafe serves excellent

coffee and food, so we relaxed there for a while

before continuing with the walk.

The remainder of the walk took us across

Chevron Island to Budds Beach, a very peaceful

spot, then around the pathway at the rear of the

Marriott Hotel and so on to the Gold Coast

Highway.

It was then just a short walk to the Main Beach

tram station from where we caught the tram to our

respective stops.

Bright sunny weather - perfect for walking, and great company.

A lovely day out

We look forward to our walk next month is to

Brisbane.

Look for the notice of the walk.
