Term 2 2020 Newsletter Week 8 29 Solandra Way, FORRESTFIELD WA 6058 08 9483 2200 From the Principal We’ve had a terrific fortnight at school. Cross country training is proceeding, attendance is growing and student progress continues to be strong. Thanks to our parents for following the rules and staying outside the classroom blocks. Student Attendance We have been monitoring student attendance closely this term as we have been allocated extra funding from the Regional Office. Attendance this week has been terrific – the best week this term. Please remember, the Education Act states that attendance is compulsory and students must arrive before 9.30am to be marked present for the morning session. Mental Maths We continue to focus on mental maths skills so that our students will have the necessary skills to learn more complex concepts. I have challenged our students to score 100 correct answers in the Friday Mental Maths Assessment and join the “Hundred Club”. So far we have more than 40 students including Rajveer, from Year one. Healthy Eating Next term we will have a whole school focus on healthy eating. For more information on the types of foods we will be encouraging the following site is excellent: https://www.eatforhealth.gov.au/guidelines Reports Semester One As previously stated, Semester One reports will not contain A-E grades due to the Covid-19 Crisis. Reports will still have comments about student progress and participation. A few will also receive a commendation from the Principal. Be Healthy Finally, let’s be grateful that we live in a country that has managed the pandemic so well. If your child is struggling with anxiety about coming back to school, this website has great ideas and strategies for students and their parents. https://kidshelpline.com.au/parents Stay Safe and Healthy Trevor Phoebe Principal A 21 ST CENTURY SCHOOL Junior

School Battery Collection Program

Do you have old batteries at home waiting to be recycled?

The dry cell batteries you have at home contain precious metals such as lead, nickel, steel, cadmium, zinc, manganese and silver. They also contain hazardous materials which can pollute groundwater and soil. And yet, 94% of batteries are still disposed of in household rubbish bins. Through the EMRC Battery Collection Program, your school has been provided a battery recycling bin to enable batteries to be collected and sent for recycling. This allows the non-renewable metals inside the batteries to be used again and ensures that hazardous waste is not ending up in landfill. The batteries you can bring to school for recycling include: • Button batteries • AA and AAA batteries • C and D batteries • 6V and 9V batteries Students are encouraged to collect used batteries and bring them to school so they can be recycled. All batteries collected help the school in the annual EMRC Battery Collection Program competition. Highest yielding schools are rewarded with great prizes, so remember to bring in your batteries!

For more information about waste and recycling in your local area visit www.rgang.org.au
