From the Editor

Hello and welcome to another newsletter that brings you the news, events and activities in the months ahead. Although so far we have not had any seriously

bad weather, no doubt there will be some.

I was surprised by the high pressure of 30.75 millibars that our barometer recorded on the 6th January, which is almost at the limit of the dial.

One of the brood of piglets that were born on New Years Day at Sandy Lane Farm. It looks very comfortable in the straw and no doubt its proud mother is not too far away. The farm shop is open on Thursdays (11am until 6pm) and Saturdays (10am to 2pm), so a chance to see them……..

News From the Parish

A very happy New Year to everyone. The Parish Council committee would like to thank John Savill for all his hard work and efforts as Chairman of the Parish Council for the last three years. We will be looking to appoint a new Chairman hope-fully by the end of March. John will continue to be involved with the neighbourhood plan and we are working on a new website for the Parish Council which will also include details from the neighbourhood plan questionnaire. We are still waiting for further updates regarding the Oxford to Cam-bridge expressway and it may be another year or more before any decision is made. Following the election on the 29th November Tim Bearder has been elected as our County Councillor and will be moving forward with the matters previously dealt with by Kirsten Johnson. The registration of the Fox and Goat as a community asset is be re-submitted as more information was requested by SODC about previ-ous and present use of the premises by the community. We now have three Fix My Street Super Users to report potholes and drainage issues in the Parish which is hopefully making a difference. However training is awaited for the new system HIAMS (Highway In-ventory Asset Management System). The ditch at Draycot corner has now been dug out and this is being monitored to see if this helps with the flooding problem. We are also looking to have salt bins put at Draycot corner and at the top of Albury View. There are also plans for a footway from village hall to the cor-ner to link up the existing footway to the bus stop on Oxford Road. Thank you to all those who took part in the litter blitz. Hopefully in the next report we will be able to confirm the name of a new Chairman of the Parish Council. Russell Chaplin Vice Chairman

From the Parish Clerk

Vacancy on the Parish Council –We are seeking applications from parish-ioners to fill the vacancy. Please let me, or any member of the Parish Coun-cil know if you are interested. Meetings are on the first Monday of the month,8.00 at the Village Hall.

Neighbourhood plan –Work proceeds regarding the formulation of the plan. The analysis of the questionnaires is under way. Please contact John Savell on 338078 if you are interested in being on the committee.

Local Plan – This deals with perceived needs for housing and will cover years up to 2033. The Plan had now been published by SODC.

Oxford/Cambridge Expressway – Corridor ‘b’ is the preferred option, but not much more is known at present. The ‘Expressway Action Group’ is pressing for the Botley route.

Playground equipment and playing field/play area – The Parish Councillors continue to carry out regular safety inspections.

The external safety inspection has been carried out.

The Parish Council considers that some repair/refurbishment is needed to the fort and will be taking the necessary action.

Tiddington4village plan – Brian Price and Christine Craddock are still pursu-ing the idea of a cycle/pathway along the old railway line and have made some progress.

The popular coffee mornings at the Cricket Club continue as do the meetings of the Art and Crafts group at the Village Hall.

Parish Website –We are looking for a new Webmaster for the Parish site. In the meantime, John Savell has been uploading some information. We hope to resolve this matter soon.

And finally – potholes and drainage!

Our ‘Fix My Street Super User’ Russel Chaplin is doing a great job getting pothole an drainage matters attended to.Don;t be put off from reporting matters yourself.

Vl Baker and Tracey Snith are doing the training for ‘Fix my Street’

There will be a public consultation in 2019, to determine the final route.

300,000 houses are proposed to be built along the route (in Oxfordshire

alone) and this is why your Neighbourhood Planning Committee has

been so keen to protect Tiddington from becoming exposed to a huge

development.

You should be very concerned about this and want to join in the future

meetings. The future of the village and area is under discussion.

This is the time for you to get involved and take part in supporting your village to contribute to the debate and enable better outcomes.

I write as Parliament gets into full swing again and Brexit looks to dominate media attention once more. However, despite the obsession of the press and media with Brexit I am sure many will be relieved to know that there are several other serious parliamentary issues which are still being dealt with. This month I write to share some of the things not in the headlines but, I think, important. Feedback suggests that Universal Credit is generally welcomed but I know that many people have been concerned with the implementation of it. I was pleased to see changes in the delivery and that with this the rollout remains on track. I have raised queries with Ministers and work with them as we move forward. Oxfordshire Lowland Rescue Charity may not be a particularly well known charity but it does important work assisting the police in the search for vulnerable missing persons. I was delighted to learn of £11,883.60 new government funding awarded to Oxfordshire. Although it is against the law to refuse access to someone with a Guide Dog, a survey by the charity found that three quarters of assistance dog owners reported that they experienced this problem. I was pleased to be able to support a recent event in Parliament run by the charity Guide Dogs to raise awareness of this discrimination and to learn of the impact of this on people. I share the growing concerns at the increase in mental health problems, especially among young people, and am thus pleased that in Oxfordshire children and young people's mental health services are to be transformed as the county becomes one of 25 trailblazer areas across the country that puts the NHS and schools together to transform mental health care. This is welcome news of much needed support for young people. Finally, you may like to know that Heathrow's consultation on the use of air-space and future operations has now opened and will run until 4

th March 2019.

This will provide the chance to contribute to Heathrow's plans for future air-space use and on their proposals for how the airport will operate. You can provide feedback online or the nearest location to attend a consultation is Maidenhead on 7

th February. More information can be found online at

www.heathrowconsultation.com If there is an issue that concerns you please do let me know. If you would like to share your thoughts on an issue with me you can email me at [email protected] or write to me at the House of Commons (House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA) or my constituency office (PO Box 84, Wat-lington, OX49 5XD).

Witness Appeal Following A Burglary In Milton Common

Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses following a burglary in Milton Common near Thame. Between 6pm – midnight on Thursday (10/1) – 1am on Friday (11/1) unknown offender/s broke into a property on London Road, Milton Common.

Access was gained via a first floor window which was smashed. A messy search was conducted and cash and jewellery were stolen. The offenders also stole a white Mercedes Benz GL Class index O***MWG. This was later recovered in Bicester.

If you have seen any suspicious looking people or vehicles in this area or have any information relating to this message please call the Police via the 24 hour non-emergency telephone number 101 and quote the reference number 43190010349. Fraudulent online activity We have seen an increase in fraudulent online activity recently. Please follow the steps below to reduce your chances of being involved in an online scam.

• Always use strong passwords – they should include a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. • Always use up-to-date Internet Security Software on all of your devices when connected to the internet – make sure this includes firewalls and anti-virus/malware software. • Install the latest operating system updates to improve your security. • Always protect your e-identity – never give out your personal details to some-one you do not know. Tiddington Village

Phone Calls and knowing Which are Genuine

Banks warn that customers should never hand over personal details to strangers — and they take an increasingly tough line on victims of fraud who admit to making this mistake. In the worst case, those who have been careless with their bank details are refused a refund.

It can be impossible for consumers to determine whether a caller is genuine. Banks will phone customers to discuss their finances — and even to sell new products.

Banks say it is also necessary to call customers if there are serious problems with their account. In the past year, there has been a rise in a type of fraud — known as vishing — where criminals ring your home and convince you a fraud has been committed in your name.

‘They persuade you they’re from your bank, internet provider or even the police, and convince you to disclose card details, or even a PIN. This infor-mation is then used by the fraudster to get access to their victim’s finances. A variation on the scam even sees a courier despatched to your home to pick up your card. The sneakiest part of the crime plays on your sense of security by asking you to call back ‘for peace of mind’. However, rather than hang up, they stay on the line when you put the receiver down — and pretend to be your bank when you call back.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Carter, head of the Cheque And Plastic Crime Unit, says: ‘If you get a call from anyone claiming to be from your bank or police and you have any suspicions, say you’ll call back — but wait a few minutes and use a different phone line or mobile.’

Alternatively, if you’ve got a BT landline, wait for at least two minutes if you don’t have a second phone to hand. This is because, after two minutes with just one caller on the line, the BT line will go dead.

St. Helen’s Church News

After the excitement of Christmas we have had a quiet few weeks in the church gathering our thoughts and prayers for the coming year. Many parishioners went to the Requiem Mass for Maureen Marchant in St. Joseph’s Thame. This was fol-lowed by burial by Father David in the churchyard here at St.Helen’s.

On 5th February we can look forward to a Pancake extravaganza in the Village Hall at 4 o’clock organized very kindly by the Chatterton family. We shall hold tossing races for the children so look out your fastest frying pan.

On Monday 25th March Josie Adams is organizing a Fashion Show in the Village Hall with a company called Travelling Trends. Some time ago we did a similar event which was very popular and we hope to get good support this time too. The com-pany bring lots of clothes from well known labels and sell them at a very discount-ed price. Tickets are on sale with Josie and others and the price of £7 will include a glass of wine to start the evening. We look forward to seeing you!

Great Milton Methodist Church

Following a major development of the Methodist Church in Great Milton, you are

invited to come and see what has been achieved. It is a small church with a reputa-

tion for its warm welcome and has been the place to meet and worship since its

foundation in 1842. You are warmly invited to come and join us and enjoy a cup of

tea or coffee after the service.

Services at the Chapel Will Re-Commence on the 3rd February

The church is located in the main street in Great Milton village and directly oppo-

site the telephone box and post office. The Methodist style of worship is bible

based with a variety of music and worship which is led by Methodist ministers and

authorised Local Preachers.

The renovated building has the benefit of a kitchen area and toilet facilities, and we

hope that in addition to be a place of worship, we encourage other organisations to

hire the building for meetings, education, social activities and celebrations.

Waterstock and Tiddington W.I.

We were very saddened to learn that Maureen Marchant had died

just after Christmas. She had been a long-standing and loyal mem-

ber of the WI, not only here in Tiddington but also in the Oxford-

shire Federation. She had been on stage performing skits at the Christmas Songs

arranged by the Combined Arts Committee until ill-health restricted her commit-

ment. We were pleased that two members of that Committee attended

Maureen’s funeral, a witness to the esteem in which she was held.

We celebrated Christmas with a three-course meal served to us in the Village

Hall by the caterer Tony Ellis. Usually we have gone out in the past but it was

lovely for most of us not to have to travel far from home afterwards.

In January Ian Brearley talked about the history of recorded and recording music

from the early cylinders, vinyl, CDs, DVDs, MP3 players and iPods. For many of us

it brought back many memories.

On 14 February we have change of speaker. Ian Brearley will be returning to us

with a talk of “The road to Urgup – and Cappadocia”, quite a change from his

previous talk. We will ask for nominations to join the committee.

On 14 March we have our Annual Meeting when we reflect on what we have

achieved during the year and elect our new committee. We hope that more will

be happy to come on to the committee to lighten the load. Following the formal

part of the meeting there will be some entertainment.

A date for your diary is our popular Quiz Evening on Saturday, 23 February at

7.30pm in the Village Hall. Make up a table of 8 players or come on the night to

join a table. Bring your own refreshments.

Tickets are £5.00 each and available from Louise Simpson.

Our monthly meetings are held in the Village Hall on the second Thursday at

7.30pm.

Don’t let the sparks fly this winter

Nearly 50% of all chimney fires in Oxfordshire happen during January, February and March. If you enjoy cosying up in front of a log fire, make sure the sparks don't fly at home this winter.

Have a cosy home not a fire zone

• Get your chimney swept at least once a year, if you regularly have log fires get it swept more frequently

• If you have a 1st floor fireplace check that it is clear of debris

• Store logs away from the fireplace Find out more at: www.365alive.co.uk

Maureen Marchant – A Tribute She’d say she was fortunate to have come to Tiddington in 1972 with dad. Moving to the house of their dreams! ‘Hill Cottage’. It was in quite a state when we arrived with the garden was so overgrown that Ben got bitten by an adder! Mum and dad threw themselves into the Village life. She was a great homemaker enjoyed doing all the things dad did!! Hill climbing in his chummy ( a car), attending rugby matches - either watching Ben at Chinnor or international games at Twickenham. In the summer months she spent days sitting on a beach with Wendy watching him sail his dinghies with Ian. Dad was a regular at the Fox and mum was involved with WI and Unit. She was also a regular with dad at the Fox and they got to know Mark before Nathalie! Mum gained her secretarial qualification while we went to school. She loved working at Wolfson; a post graduate college, where she honed all her skills culminating in becoming the House Manager. They moved to Sixpenny Edge soon after dad was diagnosed with cancer. How lucky were they to find a second lovely home in Tiddington! When in 1998 dad passed away, she was devastated ( she never fully got over this!), and she retired soon after and thanks to her gregarious personality she enjoyed a busy fulfilled retirement. Then the cruellest disease struck - COPD. She was able to keep it under control for the first fifteen years due to her great strength and tenacity. She always loved having friends and family to dinner or to stay, and she enjoyed time with the grand children and was especially helpful when Mark and Nathalie moved back to the area. She also enjoyed some fabulous holidays. Furthermore, she was very involved with the Oxfordshire WI Combined arts committee too. Then she got on the cruel rollercoaster (how we always described the later stages of the disease!) she probably rode it for 5 years until thankfully it slowed down to let her get off and fall asleep on 27/12/18. We were all blessed to have her in our lives. Mum will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was kind and generous and had a wonderful smile that she wore throughout her life. We plan to have a garage sale in the next couple of months and anything we make will go towards something as a memorial to mum and dad. Any ideas for something the Village might need please let us know by posting suggestions through mums letter box as soon as you think of them.

It is with much sadness that Paddy, our beautiful Golden Retriever, having reached the grand old age of almost 15 years, passed away peacefully at home, with his family, shortly before Christmas.

Paddy stole our hearts and was loved by all who knew him. Paddy moved to Tiddington with his family in 2006, and loved his long walks in the fields and the woods and could not resist swimming in the lake!

Paddy’s 2nd family were the Dowhuneks who regularly welcomed Paddy into their home while we went on holiday. Our heartfelt thanks go to Liam who went above and beyond for Paddy, taking him for daily walks, helping with Paddy’s regular visits to the Vet, and towards the end being there when needed, we cannot thank him enough.

Paddy loved all the attention from everyone in Tiddington, and loved his outings to the cricket club and pub!!

Thank you to all our friends who have supported us through this sad time.

Paddy will be missed by us all. May he rest in peace.

Call Citizens Advice consumer helpline when you hit problems! It’s time for the January sales - and to the tired shopper it seems as if the whole country is mobilised in some civil emergency, pouring along the pavements, off buses and into

the shops in search of reduced goods. And inevitably everyone else is in competition with you as you swing your loaded shopping bags through the driving snow, pushing the melting slush with your boots, weariedly shlepping from one shop to another, trying to beat closing time, longing for cappuccino… does it sound familiar?

But although the seasonal ordeal might be draining all your energy and enthusiasm, you can still shop with confidence, knowing that the Citizens Advice helpline is there to help you if you have a consumer problem – if you need to return faulty goods, if you’ve bought something fake or counterfeit, or if something you’ve ordered hasn’t arrived.

The Citizens Advice consumer helpline (03454 040506) is open Monday to Friday 9 - 5 (closed bank holidays). Advisers will answer your call, explaining how you can pursue your claim. They cannot make a complaint or take legal action on your behalf but they can give you practical and impartial advice, explain the law which applies to your situation, and also pass complaints to Trading Standards for you.

Before you call the helpline, prepare by jotting down the factual details of your problem, such as when you paid for the item or service; how much you paid; how you paid; the seller's name and address; and what you have done so far to resolve the issue.

Citizens Advice can also be contacted in person during opening hours or on Adviceline (03 444 111444). For locations of offices and opening hours see www.citizensadvice.org.uk/local/oxfordshire-south-vale
