NUDE FOOD DAY EVERY MONDAY

Every Monday is Nude Food Day. On Nude Food Day, our aim is for student lunch boxes to be wrapper free. The purpose of this is to raise awareness of ways we can reduce waste/packaging and also to keep the healthy food profile high. We want our students to be informed about how we can be stewards of God’s creation. This is a practical way to show that each of us CAN make a difference to the amount of waste created. Thank you for your support.

CAR PARKING Please do not park in the Service NSW (formerly RTA) car park. This car park is for their customers only. Thanks for you cooperation.

MUSIC

Instrumental Lessons This week we saw some exciting things happening in Senior Band! They were recorded playing the theme song from Star Wars with other students as a virtual band. Thank you so much to Mrs Lizzie Walsh and tutors who organised this as it was a successful session and the kids loved joining together to play a full piece of music. Watch out for the amazing video on YouTube showcasing the students’ exceptional skills.

A reminder for all senior band students to bring their instruments on Monday for band. I know being straight after the weekend it is easy to forget but, band can’t run very smoothly without instruments.

NEWSFridayMay 29, 2020THE IRRIGATOR4 irrigator.com.au

A cause close to the heartLEETON'S Renee Patonknows all to well the struggleone goes through when liv-ing with cystic fibrosis.

Mrs Paton's eight-year-olddaughter Abby lives with thecondition, making raisingawareness of CF a causeclose to the family's heart.

With this in mind, Mrs Pa-ton set herself quite the taskover the weekend in order todo this, but also raise moneyfor Cystic Fibrosis Australia.

Mrs Paton decided to runand walk 65 kilometres onSaturday in lieu of the annual65 Roses Day event that wasunable to go ahead duringcoronavirus restrictions.

May is the national cysticfibrosis awareness monthand Mrs Paton did not wantto let the opportunity slip by,global pandemic or not.

"I had a think about howI could incorporate the '65'into a fundraiser and that'swhat I came up with," shesaid.

"I tried to do it bit-by-bit.So say I would run 15 kilo-metres and then come backhome for a quick drink, before walking another six

kilometres and so on."I was really lucky to have

some friends of mine com-plete it with me along theway and the kids got involvedfor some of it too by gettingon their bikes with us.

"That really helped to pushme along."

Cystic fibrosis is a condi-tion that damages the lungsand digestive system, mak-ing is very difficult to breatheon a daily basis.

"That's why I thought therun and walk would be theperfect way to raise aware-ness ... running or walking

those distances is probablywhat it feels like everyday forsomeone livingwith CF,"MrsPaton said.

"For me to do that for justone day is really nothingwhen you have to live withit everyday."

As a result of her effort,

MrsPatonhasnotonly raisedawareness of CF, but throughdonations, she will be able todonate $3000 to the cause.

"Everyone has been reallygenerous and supportive,"she said.

"I just hope I was able toraise some awareness be-

cause that is what is impor-tant too."

Thecoronaviruspandemichas also highlighted how im-portant it is for people livingwith CF to take precautionswhen it comes to their healthas there remains no knowncure for the condition.

Scenario preparesour first respondersPUBLIC gathering rules haveeased, businesses are begin-ning to re-open and the MIAhas been free of COVID-19for more than amonth.

However, MurrumbidgeeLocal Health District's publichealth unit aren't relaxingyet. They brought GriffithCity Council, Safework NSWand Murrumbidgee PoliceDistrict to help prepare fora potential outbreak of thevirus on a citrus farm.

The scenario was only onpen and paper - but was vitalin preparing the people whowill be responsible for con-trolling any outbreak.

Senior environmentalhealth officer Tony Burnssaid the real advantage washaving MIA citrus growerVitoMancini participate.

"We got first hand experi-ence with what happens onthe farm, how they get peo-ple to work on the farm," MrBurns said.

In a typical year backpack-erswouldmove around seek-ing out farmwork and usual-ly have no fixed address.

"We wanted to explorevarious issues that could andwould happen if we had anoutbreak," Mr Burns said.

"It was a worthwhile sce-

nario that gave all the agen-cies a much closer under-standing of how we wouldwork together tohandlewhatis a very complex issue."

Mr Mancini said everyonehad a role to play in stoppingCOVID-19.

"It was a fantastic scenarioto play a part it, to try and fillin all the knowledge gaps,"MrMancini said.

While early citrus varietiesare being harvested now, international travel ruleshad limited the number ofbackpackers converging onthe district.

Mr Mancini said it meantgrowersweremore reliant onlocally-based labour.

"If any employer has em-ployees moving in from outof town, I hope theymaintainsocial distancing as much aspossible," MrMancini said.

"The citrus industry is alarge employer, and mostemployees are locally basedaround the region, withsome movement around theother fruit growing districts."

He said getting involved inthe COVID-19 scenario wasan opportunity that no grow-er should pass up if they havethe chance.

"Glad they considered the

scenario with our industry, better planning leads to bet-ter results," MrMancini said.

He said for citrus grow-ers looking to minimise therisks for their workers, Cit-rus Australia had released aguide on its website.

Murrumbidgee PoliceDistrict Chief Inspector JohnWadsworth said the valueof exercise was bringing theagencies responsible to-gether to understand theirperspectives. Particularlyhelpful was hearing from agrower which he said wouldlead to a better response.

"It's exceptionally good, itgives us an insight into thewhat if's," Chief InspectorWadsworth said. "The localcommunity will appreciatethat we've been very fortu-nate not to have any locallytransmitted instances ofCOVID-19," he said.

Chief Inspector Wad-sworth said complacencywas the biggest worry forthe community. "From a po-licing perspective, we wereimpressed with how grow-ers and backpackers havemoved to take this seriouslyand make sure the risk of in-fection is as low as it can be."

Gratitude

If you have young children, you probably spend a lot of time reminding them to say “please” and “thank you.” But the importance of gratitude goes beyond good manners—research shows children who practice gratitude are happier and more optimistic, and more likely to build strong relationships.

There are many great tools out there to help you foster gratitude, from things like gratitutde jars, to journaling and giving thanks at the end of each day. Researchers on children’s development have broken down the concept of gratitude into 4 parts; Notice, Think, Feel, Do! The following is an easy strategy you can practice each day just through conversations with your child;

Notice: Help your children notice the meaning behind an act i.e. “Did you notice that Mum cooked your favourite food?” “Did you notice this shirt I bought was your favourite colour?”

Think: prompt them to think of the meaning behind the action i.e. “Why do you think Aunty bought you this gift?”.

Feel: Encourage them to associate the action with their feelings i.e. “how does Dad taking you to the park make you feel?”

Do: prompt them to find a way to express their gratitude i.e. “is there a way you could show them how you feel?”

Children won’t always experience all the parts of gratitude, and that is ok, by prompting them with these questions and through practice we can encourage them to take notice of their gratitude and build on it. Studies show that grateful children and teens are less likely to be jealous, depressed or materialistic and more likely to be satisfied with their community and engaged and doing well at school and have social support.

Developing gratitude takes practice, reflection and time but when they are able to experience all parts of gratitude they are more likely to use their strengths to help others and make their community better.
