Transcript of Newsletter Term 2 2012 - John Forrest Secondary College
Term 2 - 2012
Students and teachers have completed a
very busy term with a strong focus on
completing work for final Semester 1
assessments. For the first time all year
groups, Years 8-12, have completed exams,
a new initiative to prepare students for all
important final exams in Year 12. Teachers
and students are working together to
discuss results and setting improvement
targets for Semester 2. Year 9 students
have completed their NAPLAN assessment
in Mathematics and Literacy. NAPLAN
results will be made available to parents in
late August.
Parent Reporting Evening
Our first semester reports were mailed
home at the end of term and provided
important feedback about your child’s
progress. We were delighted with the
number of parents who took advantage of
the opportunity to add to the information
in the report by meeting with teachers on
our Parent Reporting evening. Teachers
and parents working together, setting
priorities to support further improvement
is one of the most effective and powerful
ways to improve the learning outcomes for
your child.
After School Online Homework Centre
Students can now access MyTutor on line
at home. Our new ‘online homework
centre’, generously supported by Edith
Cowan University, is designed to be flexible
around after-school music, sport and travel
commitments. There are no appointments
needed and it can be accessed from home.
The Online Homework Centre is staffed by
Australian teachers and tutors in maths,
English, sciences, online research, study
skills and business suites for help with
writing feedback and other questions.
Students have received their personal
access card. When students have a
homework question out of school hours,
they should sign in at ecu.edu.au/yoututor.
Students and parents can also sign into the
online homework centre and ask the
teacher for a quick tour of how it works or
watch the how to video at
yourtutor.com.au/watch.
P & C
Many thanks to the parents who attended
the Annual General Meeting of the P & C on
the 22 May. A Quorum was successfully
achieved and the following office bearers
were elected for the next twelve months:
President: Sandra Melling, Vice President:
Charles Ellis, Treasurer: Sue McHugh,
Secretary: Belinda Jamieson, College Board
Representative: Monique Bosshard-Curby.
The valuable service provided by the P & C
in the management of the College Canteen
and the College Uniform Shop is enjoyed
by all parents and students. More parents
contributing just a small amount of time
will assist the very hard working few to
maintain these services. The P & C meet
once per term and this meeting is held on
the fifth Tuesday of term at 7.00pm in the
Staff Room. Please consider coming along
or providing feedback through the
representatives listed above.
The College and the P & C extend their
extreme gratitude to Mrs Nola Steiner, the
resigning Chairperson, and to
Hennie Botes, the resigning Treasurer of
the P & C. Both Nola and Hennie have
given an enormous amount of their time to
the College and have provided important
leadership to the P & C.
College Board Update
Judy Edwards, after many years of valuable
service to John Forrest Council and Board
has resigned. The college community is
extremely grateful for the enormous
support Judy has provided in lobbying for
improvements to our buildings and
grounds.
We welcome two new Community Board
members: Lisa Baker, MLA, Member for
Maylands and Dr Megan Lloyd, Scientist/
Microbiology and Immunology at UWA.
Staff Farewells
This term we are saying farewell to
Mr Stephen Bauer who is retiring after 30
years at John Forrest. I extend our thanks
and best wishes from all members of the
college community for his outstanding
career in science teaching and
contributions to the Bush Ranger Cadets
and to our college. Farewell, thanks and
best wishes also go to Ms Jemima Flendt
(Home Economics) who is taking up a
position in a small business and
Orysia Ford, Library Officer, taking up a

STUDENT SERVICES NEWS
Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club is held in the Kelso Quad every Wednesday
morning and has been a big success this year with an average
of one hundred students participating each week. The
breakfast consists of a variety of foods, including pancakes,
cereals, yoghurts, toast, cheese toasties, flavoured milk and
milo.
National studies consistently confirm that students
concentrate, think, behave and learn better when they
routinely start their day with breakfast.
It is a credit to the students that our volunteers serving the
breakfast are commenting on how well mannered the
students are.
Many thanks to our volunteers Emma, Graham, Shirley, Carey,
Pam and Phil from the Salvation Army in Catherine Street who
are doing a great job cooking and serving the breakfast. The
Breakfast Club could not function without them. Thanks also
go to Foodbank, who supply most of the breakfast through
their School Breakfast Program, and to MLC Roof Services for
their generous donation to support the Breakfast Club.
Breakfast Club is between 8.10 and 8.45am each Wednesday
in the Kelso Quad and all students are welcome.

Luke Adams Foundation speak at Whole College Assembly
Luke Adams and Brett Warner from the Luke Adams Foundation
spoke to our students at the College Assembly this term. The
Luke Adams Foundation seeks to reduce anti-social behaviour
and violence within our communities by raising awareness about
the prevalence of violence and anti-social behaviours, the
repercussions of such behaviours and the need for immediate
action.
The presentation, delivered by Luke and Brett, was based around
choices made in society and the consequences that occur as a
result of these choices.
Luke discussed how his assault has changed his life and affected
his AFL career. He also spoke about the struggles he has had to
overcome his life threatening injuries as a result of his assault.
Luke and Brett spoke about how the negative impact of peer
group pressure, anti-social behaviour, binge drinking and
senseless violence can impact on family and friends’ lives.
Luke and Brett were well received by the students with many
questions being asked of Luke during the presentation.
Phil Glossop, Chaplain
College Uniform
We have been extremely pleased with the efforts of most
students and the support from parents with regards to
college uniform. With the colder weather now upon us it is
important to maintain our high dress standards. In particular,
parents are asked to ensure that only college jackets or
windcheaters are worn (no hoods are allowed for security
reasons) and only uniform items are worn to school.
John Forrest Secondary
College entered the WA
Schools Table Tennis
Competition this term
with eight students
representing the
college from all year
groups. The day was
run very well by the
Table Tennis
Association of WA with
some very good players
attending, including
some State
representatives.
Our college performed
very well. Two of our
teams played against
each other for a place
in the finals with Tyson Cooper and Luke Allymamod winning.
Congratulations to Tyson and Luke as they went on to win the
finals for their division.
Thanks to the students that participated and to
Mr John Campbell for his support and help with the event.

LIBRARY SUPPORT
The library is open from
8.00am-4.00pm and at
lunch times for all students.
The recent upper school
exams saw many students
using the library to study
individually or to form
small study groups.
Homework help is available after school on Monday with
Ms Trees and on other days with Mrs Hammond. During the
school holidays the library will be open during the first week
for studying and borrowing books from 8.00am-3.00pm.
Bindy Hammond, Librarian
John Forrest 50th Anniversary Concert
The college has such a long and rich history of music that it only
seemed fitting to have a concert as part of the 50th Anniversary
celebrations. Past and present students were invited to be
involved in a concert held on Friday 25 May 2012.
The past (from the classes of 1973 to 2011) and present students
and staff generously gave up their time over the three weekends
preceding the concert to prepare performances by a concert
band, jazz band and choir. Many other past and present staff and
students were able to join us in the audience for the concert.
Ex student Ashley Smith (2001) who is now studying at Yale
University, having previously completed studies at UWA and
NAMA, happened to be in Perth for the concert and wowed the
audience with two fabulous pieces for Clarinet and Bass Clarinet.
On the night we were privileged to hear from past staff members,
Les Peirce and Ted Lewis, who recounted their experiences at the
College to a captivated audience. Some of Ted’s ex students also
shared their stories of their time at John Forrest.
It was a fabulous night of music making and a walk back through
the music history of the school courtesy of photo boards and
reminiscences of our past students and staff.
Congratulations Raureti ...
Raureti Engelen (Year 10), one of our very talented percussionists,
has been invited to join the percussion ensemble of Perth Modern
School. Raureti is one of only four external students who have
been invited to join. The ensemble will be performing in this
year's Opus Concert. The concert is intended to showcase the
best ensembles from the Department of Education at the Perth
Concert Hall this July.

THANK YOU TO BUNNINGS MORLEY
On 5 June the Manager (Julian Page) and the Activities Officer
(Kirsty Green) from the Morley Bunnings store visited the
College and the students in the Step Up Program. As a thank
you and token of appreciation students and staff presented
them with a Certificate of Appreciation for their recent donations
of soil, fertilizers, plants, tools and their skills to assist the Step
Up gardening project to change
The certificate was
presented by our
Principal Judy Silsbury
in the garden where
the students were keen to point out the vegetables that are being
grown. Following the presentation an informal morning tea was
enjoyed by all before Kirsty gave the students a lesson on
compatibility planting and assisted them to prepare and plant 48
jiffy pots with a variety of seeds; marigolds, capsicum, tomatoes
and carrots.

SOCCER
This year John Forrest has a Senior Boys Soccer team competing
in the School Sport WA Champion Schools Soccer Competition.
In preparation for the season our team played a scratch match
against the Guildford Grammar Second XI and in the competition
to date have played two home games.
On 16 May
John Forrest
played
Ellenbrook
Community
College. At
half time the
score was 1:1
but with few
substitutes on
the bench John
Forrest was not able to match the Ellenbrook team in the second
half and were defeated … we will not mention the score. Our
second game against Mt Lawley was a much better performance
and even though this game was of a higher standard John
Forrest was defeated 5:2.
On the 27 June the boys enjoyed their first win of the season
playing in a very competitive game against St Andrews Grammar.
The score was 3:1—a very confident performance.
The boys have one game left to play and they intend to get
another win. The most important ingredient in this team has
been their incredible sense of humour. They just enjoy playing
soccer and represent their
college well! Diane Papas, Physical Education Teacher
NETBALL NEWS
Netball students have been
competing in the most
important inter-school
tournament for 2012
throughout Term 2. Five
teams have represented
John Forrest in the WA
Champion Schools
Tournament this year. Two
Year 8 teams, two Year 9/10
teams and one Open Team.
On 11 May our teams
competed in the first stage of
Champion Schools at
Wanneroo Netball Centre.
Three teams progressed on
to the second stage of the championships, the Inter-Zone Finals.
On 14 June Year 8 Team 1 played Mercedes College at Mercedes.
This was a very challenging encounter and unfortunately our
Year 8s did not win. However they played extremely well against
a team who has played together for some time.
On 25 June Year 9/10 Team 1 and 11/12 Open Team were
victorious over their respective rivals Helena and Matre Dai
Colleges. Both teams enjoyed convincing wins in their Inter-
Zone Finals. Now these two teams will progress on to the third
stage of the Champion Schools Netball Tournament in Term 3 –
the Elimination Finals at Fremantle Netball Centre.
Congratulations to all Netball students who competed in this
tournament. You are wonderful ambassadors for our college.
TENNIS NEWS China Stars International Friendly Games
Match Play Days Tennis
Match play days this term were held at the Robertson Park
Tennis Club and Sorrento Tennis Club. The matches were played
on hard courts and synthetic grass and students competed in a
round robin format, with each match lasting about 20 minutes.
There were some great matches and some incredible shots
made. We also had a special guest attend the Match Play Day at
Sorrento when former student Jake Hawthorne came along.
Jake played in the event giving some very tough matches for the
students. Jake currently plays Division 1 Men’s pennants and
coaches at Bayswater Tennis Club. He has also completed his
Bachelor of Event, Sport and Recreation Management and is a
great role model for the Tennis students.
The divisional winners for the Sorrento competition were: Finn Keady, Hamish Sykes, Sateki A’Vard, William Cook, Ke Wen Lim,
Steff Colley, Maddison Cooper, Nikita Hill, Brock Harper, Harshard Hirani and Alex Downey John Campbell, Specialist Tennis Teacher
Ten students from John Forrest Secondary College’s Specialist Tennis
Program and their coach, John Campbell, took an eight day trip to
Beijing to take part in the China Stars International Friendly Games
during the Easter holidays. 250 students from Australia, New Zealand,
South Africa and China took part, the largest number of participants
since the games started. John Forrest was the only Public School
present at the games.
The students each played five matches against Chinese teams and
were able to play at the National Tennis Centre at the Olympic Venue.
Alex Downey didn’t lose a match and the girls played some of the top
Chinese players.
The trip also included great cultural visits to The Great Wall, The
Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, The Summer Palace, The Temple
of Heaven and of course shopping in the markets.
CROSS COUNTRY
The John Forrest Secondary College Phys Ed staff would like to thank all the
students that took part in the first ever John Forrest Cross Country event held on
the 2 May. Many students took part in the event and had to run a 3km course
around the college grounds. From this event a team of 24 competitors were
selected to represent the College at the School Sport WA Cross Country
Championships held at McGillivray Oval on 25 May. The team had solid results on
the day with many participants running personal bests, with the course ranging
from 3km for lower school runners and 6km for the upper school boys.
A big thank you goes to Mr Campbell who brought muffins and fruit for the
competitors.
Sam McShane, Phys Ed Teacher
HOT SHOTS TENNIS
This term the Year 11 Tennis and Cricket Certificate II students were
introduced to the Tennis Australia Hot Shots Tennis Program. The students
were involved in a two and a half hour course run by Tennis West. The course
took students through basic coaching techniques, games and activities that
children aged between three and seven can do in order to develop basic
tennis skills. The Hot Shot Program is a modified coaching program and uses
small racquets, soft tennis balls and reduced count size to ensure the young
tennis players develop the appropriate skills and have fun.

AFL FINALS
It has been another big year for the junior and senior boys AFL teams. The
senior boys finished off their competition in week 7 and finished second
on the ladder. For the Year 12s, this was their last chance to represent the
College in AFL and they thoroughly enjoyed representing John Forrest
with pride. Betta Tran, Brendan Campbell, Mark Vader, Jacob Willcock and
Ben Lynn led from the front each week.
The junior boys have had an outstanding season so far. They recently
won their last pool game against Ballajura Community College to finish on
top of all schools in the district and will now progress through to the next
round to play against Trinity College. This is the first time it has happened
in five years and all the boys are extremely proud of their efforts and
excited for the next challenge. The game will be held on the 5 July. A big
thank you to all staff and parents who have come down over the duration
of the season to help out and cheer on the team.
Reece Phoenix and Sam Davis, Physical Education Teachers
YEAR 12 CERTIFICATE II COACHING CAMP
During the last week of Term 1 43 Year 12 students visited Corrigin District High
School, Kondinin Primary School and Kulin District High School to showcase
their coaching skills.
The students used their excellent coaching skills in the areas of AFL, soccer,
netball, cricket, basketball and tennis to coach students from pre-school to
Year 10.
The country schools look forward to our students offering their expertise and
from the Deputy’s Desk – the Kulin District High School Newsletter quoted “The
visiting students were fantastic and inspiring. It was a great chance to be instructed
by some serious and talented up and coming coaches.”
A special thank you goes to the Netball girls who coached Kulin’s netball teams
and to the Tennis students who had a hit with the local tennis club members. Thanks also goes to William Kirk and Hazwani Raymond
who had the Kulin students hip-hopping during the lunch break!
The Camp gave the students an appreciation of country life, away from fast food outlets and electronic gadgets!!! Peta Verco, Specialist Cricket Teacher
The world of work hit home for our Year 10 students during the
period May 28 to June 1. The week after they concluded their
first taste of exams they found themselves allocated to one of a
number of employers across the metropolitan area. With the
administrative help of SEITA (Swan Education Industry Training
Association) 63 Year 10 students were sent out to some very
interesting locations. We had students at the Forrestfield
Marshalling Yards, a powder coating firm, fitness clubs,
restaurants and cafés, veterinarian clinics and a variety of retail
situations.
We at John Forrest passionately believe in the work experience
program. The students are prepared thoroughly through their
Careers lessons undertaken in Society and Environment. The
Work Experience Program is not so much about getting the
students a job but more about them enhancing general
employability competencies.
We hope that the Year 10s will demonstrate: an ability to follow
instructions, an ability to work independently, the ability to work
as a member of a team and the ability to work in a safe manner.
In class our students are thoroughly briefed on the latest
information on occupational health and safety. Further, we
expect our students to show initiative, to be able to problem
solve and think on their feet.
On the whole, our students did their College proud. We received
a great deal of complementary feedback from employers. A
number of students have been offered casual employment, and
some have been offered apprenticeships/traineeships.
Parents can rightly feel very proud of their sons and daughters.
Not surprisingly, after having very sore feet for a week and
getting very tired, some of our students have decided that
staying at school for a bit longer is a pretty good option.
Vic Grzejszczyk (Head of Learning) Society and Environment.
YEAR 10s JOIN THE WORK FORCE!
A letter of thanks has been received on behalf of the uniform shop for
donations made to the children of the Sunshine House, an orphanage
in Cambodia. Thanks also go to Doug Chisholm, our Faults
Coordinator. Doug has a close relationship with Sunshine House and
has visited Cambodia several times. Having seen the needs of the
children Doug coordinated the non-current items from the uniform
shop to be donated to Awareness Cambodia for use in Sunshine
House. The children of the orphanage also wear navy skirts and
trousers for school so our old uniform items are perfect for them!
It is wonderful that the clothes that are no longer current uniform can
be put to such a good use to help the children in the orphanage.
UNIFORMS FOR CAMBODIA
John Forrest Secondary College will be
hosting a group of Japanese students
from its sister school Koshigaya Nishi
High School in August 2012. We are
looking for friendly supportive families who are willing to host a
student during their stay in Australia and be a part of this
valuable school program.
When: Saturday 4 to Monday 13 August 2012 (9 nights)
What is needed: Apart from friendship, host families only need
to provide a bed (a mattress is OK) and meals for the students.
Shoji Australia act as guardians for the students during their stay
and offer 24 hour bilingual support to students and host families.
Families will be given a financial contribution to cover the
student’s living expenses. The students will
attend John Forrest Secondary College with
your child(ren) for ESL lessons and do other
activities during normal school hours.
Why: It’s rewarding and fun for families to experience another
culture, share their experiences learning about Australia and form
international friendships. This is a beneficial program for the
college so we hope you will be involved.
If you are interested in being a host family please call Shoji
Australia on 9385 6911 for more information or email Jenni at
[email protected] or simply complete an
application form online at https://shojiaustralia.com.au/

We’re at it again! Taking time off school to have fun in the great
outdoors. Challenging our fears, adrenalin pumping, team
building doesn't get any better than this. The Bush Ranger
Program educates cadets not only about our environment, but
also in personal growth. At Ern Halliday, Suzi Houghton and
Liam Vu, overcame their personal fears
of heights and achieved the conquest
of their first abseil.
Heidi Strickland overcame her fears of
the dark and claustrophobia to take
part in the 220m artificial caving system
challenge.
And ... Tylah Williams, normally the little angel, quiet as
a mouse, sailed through the air upside-down
screaming "yee ha" as she flew down from a double
storey tower on a flying fox.
Other activities included volley ball, archery, The BIG
Drop, movies, a sing-a-long, eating and more eating,
walking in the bush and heaps more. The cadets
worked hard as a team to stack milk crates, building a
tower high enough to 'nearly' touch the roof of the
gymnasium and to ascend the swinging log challenge
of Jacob's Ladder. At night we played spot light and
shared a campfire.
I have been a Bush Ranger Instructor for eleven years
and every year in the program I believe I have had the
most fun and enjoyed the company of the best
students that our College has to offer - I am happy to
say each year I am proven wrong! Bush Rangers is an
amazing program that offers students personal
growth, in knowledge, in character and in friendship -
and did I mention its all free!
Life just doesn't get any better than this !!!
