SCHOOL FINISHES AT 2.30pm EVERY Wednesday

Newsletter No. 1 23 March 2016 No 8

Welcome to Week 8 This week the Year 3’s have some interesting news. See the back page to read about some of the fun

activities they have been doing.

Dear Parents and Guardians

The Harmony Day celebration on Friday was a colourful testament to the fact that our school community is comprised of many different nationalities including eighteen languages– wow! St Jude’s is a great place to learn of our world community, of the things that make us special and unique, and at the same time, the things that make us the same. The prayers, food and friendship that we shared on the day were a real testament to this and thank you to Miss Carey and the year two class for leading the prayers in the beautiful Eucharistic celebration and to parents and children who made the day special with national dress and food to share!

Last Sunday was Passion Sunday or Palm Sunday, where the palms are blessed to symbolise the joyous arrival of Jesus into Jerusalem. We listened to the Gospel reading of the Passion of Jesus and of what was to follow that joyous arrival. Carrying palms on the Sunday before Easter unites us with all people who have ever welcomed Jesus as the Messiah.

Dear Jesus, Lord and Redeemer,

We know that when you entered the city of Jerusalem for the last time,

You were hailed as a King. Later the people turned against You and forgot all

that You had taught them. We remember all that You did for us. May we never turn away from You.

We give praise and glory to your name, as the Redeemer of the world. Amen

This week during Holy Week, our school community prepares for Easter. The Last Supper Para-Liturgy presented yesterday by the years 3 and 4 classes was very reverently enacted and tomorrow, at 2.15pm, our year 5 and 6 students will very reverently and prayerfully present for us “The Stations of the Cross”. Please make every effort to join us for this – it will be a powerful preparation for the Easter liturgies this weekend.

Good Friday

O merciful One, Let the great trees of the forest bend low,

The birds of the bushland keep silent, And the wind among the grasslands whisper a requiem,

In shock and mourning at what human hands have done, To the young Prince of Peace.

O let us all stop and mourn with them.

Easter Sunday

Most wonderful God, We no longer look for Jesus among

dismal graves and tombs. He is risen and goes on ahead of us.

Encourage us to live as children of the new dawn and heirs of measureless joy.

Ever living God, by your hand Christ lives. As we rejoice in his new life, enable us in our daily lives

to express clearly, sharply and loyally, the love and faith which has possessed us. Amen

I trust that the peace and joy of the Risen Lord with be with all of our families and that you experience a happy and holy Easter.

Students return after the Easter break on Wednesday 30 March!

God bless

Playgroup at St Jude’s School Hall

St Jude’s Playgroup Thursday!

Playgroup runs on Thursdays from 9.00 – 11.00 am in the school hall and is a great opportunity for mothers/fathers/carers of young children to have some enjoyable and fun time together with other families from our School and Parish community and is just a gold coin donation each time you attend. Why not join them this week!

It has been a busy term so far this year in 2016. We have completed so many fun activities in the subjects of English, Maths, Religion, Music and Japanese. To begin the year, we had to let Mr Giorgio know a little bit about ourselves. We all completed our very own student profile outlining what our favourite things are and our proudest moments.

In English we have been focused on writing narratives. We created our own characters for our stories. We used lots of describing words to explain who our main character was, these are now displayed in the classroom. Then we created the narratives for everyone to read. We also began our literacy rotations in our groups and we do different activities each day. One activity which we enjoy is our reading eggs. When we go on reading eggs we read texts at our level and answer questions. This is lots of fun!!!

Mathematics has been lots of fun, we have been rocking to our timetables! Ms Mcfarlane helped Mr Giorgio find a groovy app that helps us learn our timetables to catchy tunes. We have just finished learning our two times tables to the tune "Great Balls of Fire". We look forward to starting to learn our five timetables. Our focus in Mathematics for the term has been place value and learning to read and write number to a thousand. We have enjoyed the topic and Mr Giorgio has challenged us with problem solving cards for the topic and also given us quiz cards. We have had to listen carefully during the quiz as questions are asked in different ways. It's been

challenging but lots of fun. We are learning a lot!

In Music with Mrs Murray we have been learning about the elements of beat and rhythm and long and short sounds. This week we learnt a new rhythm taa-aa which makes a long sound. It has two beats and we used instruments and our voices in a chant to create both long and short sounds.

Japanese is very interesting. Mrs Waghorn is teaching us many new Japanese words and we do lots of art activities. It is lots of fun and we look forward to our Thursday lesson each week. We cannot wait to see what we will learnt about next!

Lastly, thanks to all the Parents who attended our class assembly and the Year Three and Four Last Supper Paraliturgy. We enjoyed participating in all of these. A reminder that Parent meetings will be conducted on Wednesday the 6th of April. Children will finish school at 12:40pm for the meetings to be carried out.

Wishing everybody a very Happy Easter !

McFarlane and the Year
