EDUCATION UPDATE

Our first IIA Winnipeg Fraud Summit was a Hit!

Recognizing the need for more fraud related training in

Winnipeg, on March 19, 2014 the chapter held a day-long

conference focused on fraud-themed topics.

Around 65 participants took in six speakers and a panel

presentation at the Delta Winnipeg. Keynote Carol Bellringer,

Auditor General of Manitoba, kicked off the day with her theme

“Fraud Happens”. Throughout the rest of the day, the speakers

and panel touched on various aspects of fraud detection and

investigation which had the participants’ heads spinning with

thoughts of what might be going on their organization. The

participants reacted enthusiastically to the presentations and

the feedback was great.

The organizers also noted a number of opportunities to improve the Summit in future years and we’re

excited to start planning the 2nd annual Winnipeg Fraud Summit.

Mark your calendars now for March 18, 2015 for our next Fraud Summit

2014-2015 IIA Winnipeg Events Planning is now underway for next year’s education

program, and we need YOU! If you would like to assist in

organizing an event or if you just have ideas, we would love

to hear from you. We are always looking for luncheon

topics/speakers and we want to know what kind of training

or seminars would most benefit our members. Please

contact Kerri Elyk, Vice President Education Services

([email protected], 204-983-8379) if you have

any comments or suggestions about our program, of if you’d

like to volunteer.

Internal Auditors Supporting our Community – Volunteers Needed!!

We are planning a community volunteer night to give our members an opportunity to get together as a

professional group and give back to the community.

Winnipeg Harvest

Thursday, May 29, 2014

6:30pm to 8:00pm

Winnipeg Harvest is a non-profit, community based organization that is a food distribution and training centre.

Their goals are to collect and share surplus food with people who are hungry and to offer training opportunities

to help people step up and out of poverty.

Volunteers will be responsible for various duties, including sorting through surplus amounts of food, dividing

bulk items into individual/family portions, and boxing food and preparing it for distribution in the community.

There is limited space and only the first 20 can participate.

Please contact Janet Hnytka, VP Member Services, at [email protected] or 204-926-1739 if you are interested in

volunteering.

For those who are unable to volunteer, show your community spirit by bringing a tin for the bin at our Annual

General Meeting on Tuesday, May 27th.

CERTIFICATION CORNER

Congratulations!

The Winnipeg Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA)

recognizes the following individuals who have recently attained either

the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or Certified Risk Management

Assurance (CRMA) designation:

• Janice Dungca, CIA, CRMA, CCSA, Acklands Grainger, Inc.

• Shawna Graham-Gross, CIA, Manitoba Agricultural Services

Corporation

• David Hammerback, CIA, CRMA, CA, Consultant

• Maria Lim, CIA, CMA, Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries

Certified Government Auditing Professional® (CGAP®)

The CGAP certification program is designed

especially for auditors working in the public

sector at all levels — federal/national,

provincial, local, quasi-governmental, or

crown authority — and is an excellent

professional credential that prepares you for

the many challenges you face in this

demanding arena.

Pearson Vue Testing Centre

As you may have heard, Winnipeg does not currently have a Pearson Vue testing

centre. The volunteers on your Winnipeg chapter board have been working with

IIA HQ and Pearson Vue to get a new local test centre so our members don’t have

to travel in order to earn their IIA designations. We have been advised that

Pearson Vue is close to finalizing details with a new local test centre and we hope

to have good news by the end of May. Please stay tuned.

The CIA (CIA®) designation is the only

globally accepted designation for

internal auditors and the standard by

which individuals demonstrate their

professionalism in internal auditing.

Earning the CIA designation is a

valuable accomplishment and a

professional advantage for auditors

at all stages of their careers, including

chief audit executives, audit

managers, audit staff, and risk

management staff, as well as

students enrolled in an accounting or

other business or financial degree

program.

The Certified Risk Management

Assurance (CRMA®) designation is a

mark of professional distinction for

internal audit practitioners. Earning

the CRMA will assist you in

demonstrating your ability to provide

assurance on core business processes

in risk management and governance,

educate management and the audit

committee on risk and risk

management concepts, focus on

strategic organizational risks, and add

value for your organization.
