President’s Message

A big thank you to the Leadership Group who is developing into a pragmatic and energetic part of the Club, ensuring the player group are engaged and driving the Club

forward.

The Past Players Association has also gathered momentum thanks again to Jeff

Wilson, Gavan Flower, Leon Fairfield and Damien Billman for their contributions.

Ivan Board Trophy: Over the course of the season there are many people that have given their heart and soul for the Old Westbourne Football Club.

The contributions of whole families, the McGinnes’s, Connors, Lears, Clarkes, Horsburgh’s and the Boards have put the Club in an excellent position not only for the

future, but have also ensured the day to day running of the Club has been a success.

This year’s winner of the Ivan Board trophy has been shared by two people that have

worked selflessly for the Club on training nights, weekends and spent countless hours ensuring that all our members are given every opportunity to succeed. It is with great

pleasure that I announce that Steve Herman and Graeme Clark are the recipients of this year’s Ivan Board trophy.

The relationships and the work they have undertaken, not only this year but in years gone by, will serve the Club in all key areas of its operations and strategic direction,

not only for the now but also into the future.

Graeme is currently on an overseas holiday with his family.

Steve has served as the assistant coach of the Under 14’s and as team manger of not

only reserves but also the seniors on most occasions this year. Steve wears his heart on his sleeve and has a motto that Jimmy Stynes has etched into the hearts and minds

of many football followers of ‘doing whatever it takes’. Congratulations Steve and Graeme.

Life memberships are the highest honour the Club can bestow on any of its members. Congratulations to Mark Aquilina on receiving life membership of the Old Westbourne Football Club. He is not always a mild mannered person but a ferocious warrior on and off the field.

Its not always about the numbers, how many years of service or how many games the person has played, but about the passion and the commitment of doing something

special not only for me but for my mates and the Club. He is respected and revered in

many close knit circles of the Club. Many times he is unassuming and slips under the radar. Well done Mark.

Congratulations to all the individual Junior and Senior players for winning their

respective team awards, and especially to those who have received League

recognition. A huge thanks to all the volunteers who were rightfully acknowledged and thanked at their respective presentation nights, including Committee members.

I encourage all to attend the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 27th October at

7pm (in the James Mitchell Centre – Westbourne School), and hence remind all

coaches and Committee personnel to submit their end-of-year reports accordingly. Kind regards, Ace, President, Old Westbourne Amateur Football Club

2011 Coaching Positions

2011 Coaching Positions There has been a relatively poor response to advertisements for coaching & assistant coaching positions for all teams—seniors, reserves, Under 19, Under 18 & Club XVIII teams in the VAFA, Youth Girls in the AFL, plus U 9, U 10, U 11, U 12, U 14, & U 16’s in the WRFL—which were placed in local papers & VAFA & WRFL Finals Records. Enquiries and applications may still be submitted to the Club. Enquiries to Graeme Clark, Ivan Board, Val Lear or President Adrian Lipscombe on [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected];

If you are interested, or you know of someone who may be interested, please convey contact details to Ivan Board (Tel. 9749 3808 or 0422 389 102) ASAP.

Light Poles

NEW LIGHT POLES! Two new light poles have been received for the West (Williams) oval. When installed (pending final footing design and building permit), they will provide much needed relief to the (main) East (Colledge) oval, especially with the heavy training workload. This is a significant capital expenditure for our Club, and there are ongoing plans to

raise funds during the year and into next year to assist with the costs associated with

this important project. These include major raffles, BBQs and other functions, including the recent Club Auction Night and Major Raffle.

Australian Sports Foundation: The Club has received advice from the Australian Sports Foundation (which is a Government initiative to promote sporting projects in Australia) that the Old Westbourne Training Lights Project is eligible for tax deductibility benefits for donations.

Please refer to the letter and donation form attached to the Newsletter.

ASF donation forms have been prepared (copy available back of this Newsletter and on Website in the near future). Donations of $2 or more will be tax deductible. Old Westbourne is also to receive consideration for a discretionary grant.

NOTICE BOARD

Annual General Meeting—Change of venue.

The OWAFC AGM is to be held on Wednesday, 27th October at 7.00 pm. It has previously been decided, & advertised in the Westbourne School newsletter, that it would be held upstairs in the Andrew Park Pavilion. The school has now advised

that with examinations to be held from Thursday 28th October to Thursday, 18th November that the upstairs room will not be available from the set up on 27/ 10 until

after the end of exams. The school has granted use of the James Mitchell Centre for the AGM so that will be the new venue. All members are urged to attend the meeting & some drinks should

be available.

Coaching for 2011.

Response to our advertisements for all senior & junior coaching positions has generally

been a little disappointing. If you are interested, or you know of someone who may be interested, please convey contact details to PP Ivan Board (Tel. 9749 3808 or 0422 389 102) asap. The sub- committee is arranging interviews & your assistance with more candidates

may avoid the need for re-advertising & subsequent delays.

Volunteers for 2011. If you are considering being a volunteer for next season, or if you know of someone

who may be interested, please convey contact details to the Club committee—preferably Graeme Clark for any role with junior teams or the girls team, or Ivan Board

for any of our VAFA teams. Team managers are crucial to Club operations & early

appointment & available guidance is a major objective for 2011.

Similarly if you are considering, or would like to have preliminary discussions about , joining our Club committee please contact President Adrian Lipscombe, Past Pres Ivan,

or Graeme Clark for an informal chat.

Nominations for all committee positions should desirably be lodged in writing with Club secretary Val Lear 7 days prior to the AGM.

Annual Reports. All applicable people are reminded to get their annual reports to Secretary Val asap, so

that the total consolidated annual report can be finalised & produced well in advance

of the AGM

Membership Tickets/ Cards Any OWAFC members who have paid their 2010 dues & have not received a

membership card should contact PP Ivan for their card. These membership cards are essential to legally allow entry to our licensed area—the upstairs portion of Andrew

Park Pavilion—for any football or cricket function where alcohol may be served. Whilst the football season may have finished the licence is yearly (with Club licence fees due

by 1st January each year) & the Club membership will continue until near the start of

the 2011 football season when new membership fees will be set & new membership tickets prepared.

Ground Report

Ground report: Good rain over August and September has seen the condition of the ovals stabilise

somewhat and, along with maintenance works, we can hope to see a significantly improved surface over the coming Spring and Summer months, compared with last

year. However, the colder than expected start to Spring has not provided the ideal

conditions for new growth. Fingers crossed for the next few weeks!!

We thank all teams for their patience and understanding during the season, especially during the last several weeks. Hopefully the West oval will be able to be utilised more next year, with the installation of the new light poles. Our special thanks to Graeme Clark of “Statewide Water Cartage” for his assistance and generous rates for services offered to the Club and school over the summer period. Statewide also offers Labour Hire Services.

Contact Graeme on 0414 984 702 for his services.

ACCESS Update

Access to the school (Clubrooms etc) from Sayers Road is no longer possible with construction works for the new Year 9 Learning Centre. NO ACCESS IS PERMITTED via the ‘old farm gate’ off Sayers Road, so all traffic should progress via the main school entry off Sayers Road or via Marquands Road (Gate C).

Work on the new entry via Sayers Road (at Doubell Boulevard), plus other internal access road systems, is currently underway and is expected to be completed soon.

Next year should see a vast improvement in access and parking provisions at the Club. When works are completed, general access via the school will not be permitted.

Volunteers

Your Club and Team needs Volunteers!

The Club and all teams express their thanks to all the volunteers who offered their

precious time and efforts to the multitude of tasks required to make it possible for the players to take the field on game days in 2010.

Volunteering is fun and rewarding, course training is paid for by the Club, and

remuneration may be available for senior team trainers. Start thinking about next

year!

Please refer to your Club or team management if you are willing, prepared and able to assist in any way. As with previous years, trainers are likely to be urgently required for some teams. Pre-qualified first-aiders and some medical/nursing staff may already have the required pre-requisites. Also, check local newspapers and take note of other Club advertisements seeking coaching and training staff for 2011.

Please contact the relevant Coordinator, Coach or Team Manager should you wish to ‘lock in’ to assist with a team role for 2011.

Note: Whilst parents most often fill the volunteering roles for Junior teams, Senior teams all over the Region struggle to find regular volunteers. Please be mindful of this

when attending matches, and offer assistance when you are in a position to help.

Courses

Need a top up? NOW is the time to think about a refresher course for 2011. Note to anyone wishing to volunteer – course fees are paid for by the Club.

The Club always needs team trainers and Club Umpires.

Check the status of your current registration. Are you due for renewal? Keep an eye and ear open for when courses are announced.

Also, Wyndham City Council is offering education and training opportunities as part of the Wyndham Volunteer and Community Learning Program. Check their website for upcoming courses that may be of interest to you. Most courses are free, except for First Aid.

for ‘cheap’ sale or as a giveaway to a smaller Old Westbourne player who could use them for 2011? This is a great way to get

those boots back where they belong……on the footy field!

Don’t throw them away! Find those old boots and put them in a safe place, ready for the next training day in 2011!

SENIOR COACH REPORT

…And from the Senior Coach on Presentation Night.

It was great to see so much support for the Club on a very special night while we are

all after team success it is still important to recognize some individual efforts. It was an interesting year as far as our results went and our consistency.

Our best was certainly good enough however our worst wasn’t pretty. We welcomed a number of new players to the Club and it took as a few rounds to get

the team to gel, but I think any time you make finals that is a good result and we probably finished were we deserved to finish, hopefully from the result the players

learn from areas of weakness and improve on them over the summer.

As some of you may be aware I have decided to step down as Senior Coach of Westbourne, the people who know me well understand this was not an easy decision

and probably wasn’t made until Jo and I found out that we are expecting our 3rd Child. Given this addition I have decided to free up some time to support my wife and

children.

Amazing football Club, we have been through some challenging times not just on the footy field but also off, and it was during these times that I realised the importance

the footy Club plays as a support network for all. I had it on the player’s handbook which we used for recruitment that it is more than just a football Club. I honestly

believe this and it has shown true in so many of these difficult situations. While we all

love our football it is actually secondary to the relationships and bonds we build over our time at such a great Club. I know for Jo and I we have meet some lifelong friends

here at Westbourne and we thank you for welcoming us in. Awards B&F Chris Hudson Early had to adjust to local footy again which at some times can be challenging, He is

an absolute stand out player in our competition and it all starts with the standards he

sets on the track, which he was able to instil into the team over the last 2 months of the season. Work rate is unbelievable the stand out for me was against OP in the last

round were he just willed himself to every contest in the last 5 mins. I have no doubt he would be a great captain in the future.

R Up Justin Johns Fantastic recruit to the footy Club, came on as an assistant coach so with the extra responsibility was still able to stay focused on his footy. Probably didn’t play in his

traditional position on the wing but I thought he just set us up on the half back line. Another one who leads by example on the training track. Also our highest vote getter

in the League B and F 3rd Swoop What can I say, Mr consistant over the last three seasons Swooper has finished in the

top 3, which is a fantastic effort, this year he stepped it up with his fitness and came back pre season in the best shape he has been in since U19 days. He just does the

best he can every week and has clearly had another outstanding season. Best First Year: Daniel Riosa It’s always enjoyable working with young up and coming players as usually they have

come up from the junior ranks as the best players and then all of a sudden they need to work their way back up from the bottom, and let me tell you this guy really

surprised me, he bulked up over summer and came back with plenty of confidence. For most of the year it would be fair to say he didn’t play in his preferred position but

played a very important role each week, some weeks in the middle others down back.

SENIOR COACH REPORT

(continued)

Coaches Award: Chris Hudson It’s pretty tough to come up with the coaches award as there are so many players that

work hard and try their best for the team, but this guy is somebody that I believe in the last 2 years has improved out of site in my view, simply by being able to

understand and implement our game plan every week under all conditions. He is probably somebody that may not have been in everybody best side come start of the

year but I guarantee he would have been at the end. He played his role and was

rarely beaten. I believe in getting honest feedback from the players regularly as if you get it at the end of the year it is too late, this guy I would call after every single

training session for the past 2 years and would give me honest feedback on training and games. I know I could not have improved as a coach without his support. He also

understood how important social function where to me when it comes to bringing a

team together and even though he was not the social coordinator he took on this responsibility I am sure to help support me and the Club. For these reasons I am very

honoured to acknowledge Miller.

Thank You’s The Club for the Opportunity to coach it was always a goal of mine to coach and to have had the opportunity to coach at such a supportive Club has been a great experience.

Reserves Report 2010 The team struggled for consistency throughout the season and for a number of reasons. After starting the season off in fine fashion, winning the first three games, playing stocks then became limited by injury and unavailability. The fact that again 57 players represented the reserves, is testament to that. The positive comes in the fact that many reserves players had the chance to be promoted and play senior football, which wasn’t detrimental to their end result. Having a number of younger players was a bonus for this Club, especially the core group that came from last season’s Under 19’s. With youth comes inconsistency and this certainly showed through the middle part of our reserves season. Persistence and a much better performance in the last seven games rewarded the players with a finals experience. The one stumbling block to this team was Old Paradians. After two heavy in-season defeats, they again were too overwhelming in the final. When we look back as a team, results showed that on our day we were a fine outfit. Having beaten eventual premier Banyule and losing to them by only 3 points away and running the other Grand Finalist Bentleigh to two close losses, proves that with more effort and consistency the team is not far away. From my perspective, I pass on my best and thanks, to outgoing Senior Coach, Brett Connors for his fine work. I also wish to thank my assistant, Phil Mesman who handled the sidelines when I was on the playing field. Steve Herman was an enormous contributor to our team and his best Clubman award is indicative of this. To the many other volunteers and committee, your efforts are acknowledged. Congratulations must also go to our award winners and Leigh Barnes and Josh Lawn certainly justified their performance. Our Captains Mark Aquilina, when available and Dean Stanley, lead from the front. I encourage all players to work hard in the off-season. I can certainly look forward to the development of some fine youngsters over coming seasons with the likes of Riches, Zhang, Willson, Diblasi, Andrades and Leighton to name a few. Despite few wins (mostly due to perhaps being in the wrong grade) the team fought gallantly throughout the year and never gave up. The one benefit that can be gained

from playing in a higher grade is that the competition and skill improvement can be accelerated by playing high quality opposition. Hopefully the players will reflect on the

year in those terms, and will be re-energised for 2011.

The Old Westbourne footy Club has a proud history with the Sayers Road Auskick group. Old Westbourne AFC Juniors started when (in 2003) some Auskick parents were keen on forming some junior teams to enter the local competition in 2004.

Sayers Road Auskick 2010 Season Season 2010 came to an end on Sunday 1
