On March 8 every year, International Women’s Day is celebrated across the world. This is an important day to reflect on the progress that women have made towards equality. Senior students Keshabi Dhungel, Maria Hull, Jess Harrison, Natalia Jara, and Melissa Stinear attended a breakfast on the day and heard from two inspiring women, Katrine Hildyard and Crystal Vas.

This was a great experience; it has encouraged me to get more involved in the school and my local community. I enjoyed meeting different women with important jobs. - Jess Harrison

It was really good to hear stories of how women have overcome challenges. It shows how much women have achieved over the years, and being able to attend helped me to realise that I should do what I love, believe in myself and to be happy and proud of who I am. - Melissa

Stinear

It was truly inspiring to see so many beautiful women striving to make this world a better place.

Maria Hull

Dux of Salisbury High 2012

Laozi was a philosopher from the Zhou Dynasty, China. He was also considered to be the founder of Chinese Taoism. Laozi always sought the truth, formulating various ways to obtain it. These are some of his ideas: Never let yourself be held back by

minor obstacles; always push forward so that you may achieve.

Learn to tolerate slight unfairness and sadness; otherwise you may never obtain greater justice.

To only notice someone’s bad points may mean you will never be able to appreciate their intelligence.

Everyone wants to be completely perfect and flawless – nobody’s perfect.

Everyone wants to do things perfectly – no one can do things perfectly, but they can improve at them.

A small stature doesn’t necessarily mean weakness, being huge doesn’t necessarily mean you have strength.

Being nearby something frequently doesn’t mean you are familiar with it; distant things are not necessarily strange to you.

Sharing the load Bridge Building in Year 10 Engineering

In Term 1 there have been two classes of Engineering students. They have been studying bridge design, forces, pressure and the need to have loads in equilibrium. The students have also been studying loads under tension and compression and how it relates to bridge building. Students have then applied these concepts with limited materials in the construction of a balsa wood bridge. The bridge must be capable of spanning a 400mm gap between two benches. Once the bridge is complete the class votes on its appearance, the bridge is weighed then tested with a rig and weights. The record of 32.5 kg has stood for two years. This year three groups of students blew this record out of the water, even allowing for a bit of additional weight. First prize: Line 4 - Jean-Marie Sengiyumva, Brodie Harrison and Shayne Scanlon with a huge 71.5 kg. Line 6 - Van Lian with a commendable 47 kg. Get ready for winter Now is the time to start thinking of appropriate uniform as the weather cools down. School jumpers are available from the uniform shop as well as long blue pants. Pants must be dark blue. Long sleeved tops worn under the polo top must also be dark blue. Any variations do not support the school uniform policy. Over the holidays consider stocking up on clothing suitable for school wear and support your child and the school by having the correct attire for the cooler winter months.

From the Principal Successful Open Night

Thank you to all the parents, students and staff who made our school’s Open Night such a success with over 200 young families attending, enjoying and viewing our facilities for teaching and learning. The address presented by our Governing Council Chairperson, Stewart Sparrow, strongly supported that Salisbury High School

is a learning place that enables students to achieve necessary knowledge, skills and behaviours for their life ahead.

Salisbury High School students voices heard Earlier this month, Georgia Bishop, Nimish Dalvi, Mary-Anne Frost, Maria Hull, Samuel Nitschke, and Lachlan Sparrow attended a Brighter Futures workshop run by DECD. Their role was to provide an insight into issues that young people might be faced with today regarding their schooling and their sense of wellbeing in the community. Our students did a great job as representatives of students from the Northern suburbs. They presented their ideas and opinions in a professional manner to provide authentic feedback in order to improve outcomes for all students. If you are interested in being an active citizen in your community with opportunities such as this, speak to Ms Edwards or your SRC year level leader to get involved.
