In the Christian tradition it is a time of waiting, waiting in Hope. It is the waiting that heralds the anticipated, welcome events like the birth of a child. Our final College Mass was celebrated yesterday with our College Chaplains. At this time of the year we need to be reflective of the true meaning of Christmas as recipients of a Catholic education. Amid the distraction of gift giving and shopping till all hours, the hope in the birth of Christ is what we focus upon as we continue to aspire to be the best people we can be, bringing peace and joy to each other and this world that we live in. I thank our sponsors and presenters, while congratulating all our Award recipients on their achievements, and hope that they become the inspiration for all our students in 2019. The Season of Advent During the Season of Advent we awaken our hearts in hope for the arrival of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, born in Bethlehem. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE - Craig Holmes

NEWSLETTER 7 December 2018

Advent is the first season of the Church year where we prepare ourselves to celebrate the wonderful feast of Christmas. In the Christian tradition it is a time of waiting, waiting in Hope. It is the waiting that heralds the anticipated, welcome events like the birth of a child. Our final College Mass was celebrated yesterday with our College Chaplains. At this time of the year we

need to be reflective of the true meaning of Christmas as recipients of a Catholic education. Amid the distraction of gift giving and shopping till all hours, the hope in the birth of Christ is what we focus upon as we continue to aspire to be the best people we can be, bringing peace and joy to each other and this world that we live in. The Annual Award Ceremony recognised student excellence across a broad range of student achievements that the College values. I thank our sponsors and presenters, while congratulating all our Award recipients on their achievements, and hope that they become the inspiration for all our students in 2019.

The Season of Advent

During the Season of Advent we awaken our hearts in hope for the arrival of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, born in Bethlehem. In our liturgical prayer we can light an Advent candle and we can sing Christmas carols and remember that God became one of us and lived with us. Awaken your joyful hope!

Lord, help us to get ready,

to prepare ourselves to welcome You into our hearts

and to live as Your people always, Amen.

As 2018 draws to a rapid close, we turn our attention to 2019. Beginning a new year is the opportunity to start off fresh, with new subjects, new teachers and some new students. I would like everyone to remember a couple of really important things. 1. Be friendly. If you find yourself in a class where there may be some people you don’t know very well, use it as an

opportunity to get to know people outside your friendship group. You never know - they may be your best friends in the future!

2. Come to school every day. If you miss one day a week, this equates to eight weeks a year. No one can do as well as they could when they miss that much school.

3. Get involved. School is a far more enjoyable place when you know what is going on and you get involved. 4. Be considerate. Of everyone. School is a community of people who are all here for the same purpose – Learning. We

all need to ensure that we allow everyone to learn to their fullest potential.

I hope every family has a wonderful and joyful Christmas and safe and Happy New Year. I look forward to seeing you all next year.

Step Up Our 2019 Year 11 and 12 students have completed their VCAL and VCE Step Up program. They all now have tasks to complete over the holiday period, ranging from reading to note taking and responding to questions. Students were engaged with the Step Up program, despite it coming straight after their exams, and showed a genuine enthusiasm for their selected courses for 2019. While we expect students to rest over the holidays and take the opportunity to spend time with family and friends, we also expect students to come back in 2019 ready to start the school year having completed their holiday tasks.

Examinations The junior students completed their examinations this week, and we commend them on their preparation and studious attitude. The skills that are developed through this process will assist the students as they progress through the upper levels of the school in future years. I hope that everyone enjoys a happy and safe holiday period.

With best wishes Debra McNaughton

Bereavements - Yours prayers are asked for the following families who are mourning the passing of a loved one recently. The Carlile family on the passing of Raymond Kevin Hardeman, grandfather of Liam 12D and Arielle 9B. The Dowling family on the passing of Marie Dowling, great grandmother of Ned 11B, Jobe 9D and Connor 12B Our thoughts are with you all at this sad time.

Sacred Heart College Annual Yearbook - Mrs Debbie Scarlett, Publications Officer

Our 2018 College Annual Yearbook was given out to all students on Thursday 6 December. Could parents please make sure that your student has brought their copy home. The Annual Yearbook is a snap shot of the 2018 year and includes all students class photos. We hope it is a lasting memento of the 2018 year for your student. Students who were away, and didn't receive their copy, can either drop in to the College up until the office closes this year, Thursday 20 December, or they can collect it when they return next year. The Year 12 students who have already finished for the year will have their Yearbook posted, along with their VCAA certificate. If you have any queries regarding our College Annual Yearbook, please contact me.

DIRECTOR OF FAITH AND MISSION - Annie O’Shannessy

The Advent season gives us an opportunity to prepare for the coming of Jesus, our Saviour. I have enjoyed laying out the Advent candles, setting up the nativity set at home and at the College, and printing out Advent prayer cards for the coming weeks. Doing this simple chore has given me the time to remember when I did it with my children and the excitement of preparing for Christmas. Christmas is certainly all around us and it is hard not to be wrapped up in all the ‘stuff’. I was shocked when I went into the supermarket the other day and it really struck me all of the disposable ‘stuff’ that will mostly end up in landfill. I feel very strongly that this year I am not going to succumb to the ‘stuff’ and focus on what is most important; having Jesus in my life and the blessings of my family and friends. I hope that Christmas brings the whole College community much peace and happiness this Festive Season. God bless. The Container to East Timor Fran Wigley, (Macedon Ranges Friends of East Timor) last week reported that the 13 bags of ‘new old stock uniform’ is now at the container and will be shipped to East Timor very soon. The uniform is going to Turiscai and they should receive it by February. This is great news as it was no small exercise to take all the plastic out and pack the 13 bags. Thanks to the many students who assisted with this huge task. It is a great feeling knowing that other students will enjoy wearing brand new uniform for their school events.

Community Kitchen Christmas Party - There was a rousing applause for all our volunteers at our last Community Kitchen for the year. All our volunteers are taking a well-earned break for Christmas. Our students who come week in and week out are fantastic, and our guests really enjoy their hard work and company, not to mention the music and banter. The Community Kitchen has been in operation for 10 years and it is a wonderful opportunity for our students to gain volunteer experience. We look forward to continuing next year and ask our students to consider joining our merry team.

Thank you to all our student and adult volunteers and to our guests.

And a special thanks to

Mrs Maryann Kennedy.

2018 CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE

TOY DRIVE FOR THE SALVOS

Thank you to everyone who has generously brought in a present for the SHC Toy Drive. We have collected many presents and soon the Salvation Army will be collecting these and distributing them to people who might be struggling this Christmas. This year was the first time we had a Toy Drive and I plan on doing it again! Thank you to everyone who brought something and for the people who helped; Mrs Penney, Cai Rowland, William Shaddock, the Mercy@Work team and the Homeroom teachers and parents for bringing presents in. Presents can still be brought in up until Thursday 13 December and delivered to the Main Office. Sacred Heart will also be making a donation to the Macedon Ranges Toy Shop from the money we raised from the Mercy@Work Stall at the Kyneton Show. Nicolas Hanna on behalf of the Mercy@Work Team

Music doesn’t stop at SHC until the very end! Our End Of Year Mass rehearsal day saw a large number of students singing and playing together. After practising carols in the Chapel, our students walked to Ray M Begg to share the joy of community singing with the residents there. The energy and joy was wonderful, and residents and students parted with many smiles on their faces. We then rehearsed the remainder of the Mass, joined by some beautiful voices of the students from Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School. Despite the heat in Quambi, our End Of Year Mass was a wonderful experience and our choir (including the OLOR students) and band performed beautifully to celebrate the end of our school year. Congratulations go to our Music Scholarship recipients! These students showed many values, including superb musicianship, discipline and involvement. For those students who didn’t receive a scholarship this year, it’s a great goal for 2019 – not just practising, but involving yourself in ALL facets of performance at the College!

We aim to continue supporting our families and raising parental awareness of the benefits of engaging in their children’s education along with providing them with the skills to do so. We are excited to announce that Sacred Heart College will be hosting Andrew Fuller (Author, Clinical Psychologist and Family Therapist Hon. Fellow, University of Melbourne and Ambassador for Mind Matters) on 13 March 2019 at 7pm as part of our Parent Engagement Partnership Program.

Andrew bases his presentation on research conducted on over 16000 young people by Resilient Youth Australia, which provides a clear picture of the strengths and vulnerabilities of young a people, as well as what we can do to promote great lives for our kids.

As a precursor to the evening we will be featuring some of Andrew’s articles in the College newsletters leading up to the event.

Once again this year the GVBR Team were exceptional. The staff and students had a wonderful week riding from Bright to Benalla, covering 524 kms! Each night there were many tired bodies, but we all rose the next morning to do it all again the next day! Our participation in the ride would not be possible without the ongoing support of our wonderful sponsors. We would also like to thank the parent helpers and staff for making this possible.

CAREERS NEWS - Karina Wheeler & Julie Matricardi-Old

Change of Preference 2018 Dear students and families of the Year 12 2018 cohort, the Careers Department will be open for Change of Preference. Any Year 12 students that need support to discuss their change of preferences for 2019 can ring to book an appointment. Appointments will be available from Friday 14 December throught to 11:30 am on Wednesday 19 December. Please note all the Tertiary providers will be offering a number of information sessions to assist students with their options after their Year 12 results are released. These include one-on-one sessions, College open campus times and call centres. Contact the individual Universities for further information. We would like to wish you all the very best for 2019.

Structured Workplace Learning Placements The Careers Department is seeking local businesses and tradespeople to support our Year 10 VEIP and Year 11/12 VCAL students in 2019 with one day per week Structured Workplace Learning placements. Our Year 10 Vocational Education Industry Pathway students are beginning to experience the world of work and need a Friday placement with supportive and encouraging employers. Agreements are subject to employer and student satisfaction and can be cancelled at any time without issue. The minimum payment requirement is $5 per day. Our Year 11/12 VCAL students are enrolled in Vocational Education and Training (VET) certificates in courses such as hospitality, beauty, sport and recreation, allied health services, business, animal studies, automotive and building and construction, which all have a requirement to attend placement at a business which aligns with their chosen certificate. Work placement days for VCAL students are each Tuesday and the students attend VET (TAFE) training each Wednesday. Again, these arrangements are always subject to employer and student satisfaction and also have a $5 per day minimum payment. This is a great way to train and trial a future apprentice or employee, to pathway a student into a school based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBAT) or just provide a fantastic opportunity for one of our young people to establish their employability skills on the job. If you would like more information on providing a work placement for one of our students, please contact Mrs Julie Matricardi-Old in the careers department via email: [email protected] or call the College on 54211262 and speak to Julie or Karina in careers.
