Rotary E - Club of Southern Africa D9400
As 2017 starts, President Annemarie Mostert wishes all the club members a very prosperous and healthy 2017.
We have achieved so much since the club was chartered in February 2014 and there ’ s still so much to do!
For members born as a Rooster in the Chinese Lunar Calendar, we hope that you crow loud and clear and with much love in your heart
in the next 12 months.
Pres. Annemarie is seen in a newspaper article at the end of January. This story covers Pres. Anne-
marie with folks from Sesego Cares and
their Bakery — a very successful project
indeed.

MEMBERSHIP GROWTH IS EXCEP-
TIONAL
Since the
club ’ s in-
ception
some three
years ago,
we have
enjoyed a
steady
growth.
During the January board meeting, we
inducted PDG Alex van der Sluys and
PP Leon van Dyk.
PP Leon is seen with his wife, Yolande who
joined our club in July 2016.
Soon, we will be inducting PP Gawie Lotter
and Judy Fredericks.
As at 31 January, we have 63 club members.
Our aim is to have 200 members in three
years’ time.
We welcome all our new members and we
look forward to doing projects with you all
soon.
We are very proud to announce that President Annemarie Mostert has been proposed to stand for District Governor
in 9400 for the 2019/2020 Rotary year.
We wish Pres Annemarie all the best during her interview and we know that if she is selected, she will be an
outstanding District Governor.
January is Rotary Awareness Month. What is Rotary Awareness?
Promoting awareness internally, among Rotarians. Rotary Information, History, and
Membership Development, as well – if we talk
about committee roles and responsibilities.

Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) is a Rotary
International student exchange program for students in
secondary school. For the first time, our club
sent an exchange
student. Gretel Buttress
went to France and she is
hosted by District 1770.
We received Bruno Abdo
from Brazil and he’s
already involved in the
Randpark School’s soccer
team and many other
activities.
Since 1929, RI has seen the young generation experience new
cultures, and currently about 9000 students are sponsored by
Rotary clubs every year.
We wish Gretel all the best with her long-term stay and we
welcome Bruno to sunny SA. The club is proud of you both.
We’ll keep members informed of the students’ activities.

Rotary Foundation Awards! In addition to recently being awarded the highest four-star
overall rating and a perfect 100 out of 100 score for accountability and transparency by the charity watch-dog
Charity Navigator, this week, the 30,000 member strong Association of Fundraising Professionals named The Rotary Foundation as the 2016 Outstanding Foundation! "We are honored to receive this recognition from the
AFP, which gives us even more reason to celebrate during our Foundation's centennial year," said Rotary
Foundation Trustee Chair Kalyan Banerjee. Sadly, many Rotarians are left to discover The Rotary Foundation (TRF) for themselves and it is not explained to them
at the outset of their membership that annual or regular contributions to TRF are a moral imperative – within the
bounds of their own financial resource. Remember the parable of the widow’s mite? TRF is Rotary International in Action and it is difficult to believe that Rotary itself would exist without TRF. TRF is not about money but what good can be done with that money and a summary of Rotarians’ contributions to
TRF will give an indication of the good that has been done by Rotarians world-wide:
Contributions 2014/15 Cumulative
Annual Fund US$ 122.9 million US$ 22 billion
Endowment Fund US$ 20 million US$ 275 million
Polio Plus US$ 93 million US$ 1.2 billion
Other (disaster relief, etc.) US$ 28 million US$ 976 million
Programme Awards US$ 247.2 million US$ 3.46 billion
TRF has asked every Rotary Club to contribute US$2 650 and every Rotarian to contribute US$265 to celebrate TRF Centenary. Members of the E-Club are urged to contribute 26.50 or any multiple thereof of any currency. In Rand that would be R2.65, R26.50, R265.00, R2 650.00 or whatever is appropriate and suits your financial
pocket. But please give something to TRF and be a partner of and actually participate in the wondrous programmes of
The Rotary Foundation. Please! \IN
At the 1917 convention outgoing Rotary President, Arch Klumph proposed to set up an endowment
“for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it
became a distinct entity within Rotary International.
In 1929, the Foundation made its first gift of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children.
However TRF only stuttered along until, in 1947 when the founder of Rotary Paul Harris died and
contributions began pouring in to Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was
created to build the Foundation. 1947: The Foundation established its first program, Fellowships for Advance Study, later known as
Ambassadorial Scholarships. 1965-66: Three programs were launched: Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training, and
Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called
Matching Grants. 1978: Rotary introduced the Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants. The first 3-H Grant funded a
project to immunize 6 million Philippine children against polio.1985: The PolioPlus program was
launched to eradicate polio worldwide.1987-88: The first peace forums were held, leading to Rotary
Peace Fellowships.2013: New district, global, and packaged grants enable Rotarians around the world
to respond more effectively to the world’s greatest needs.
