June 17, 2020

We continue to look ahead to September and plan for the most

likely scenarios, as guided by the Ministry of Education and the

Society of Christian Schools in BC (SCSBC).

Along with the Ministry of Education, we are hopeful that school

will look much more normal in September than it currently does

and we thank you deeply for your perseverance and support

over the last few months. The overall wellbeing of students

remains crucially important, which compels us to focus on more

than simply academic aspects of school, but also social,

emotional, spiritual, mental and physical supports and

opportunities.

Best-Case Scenario: BC Schools Stage 1

If BC schools are placed in Stage 1 by September, we expect to

see a full return of all K-12 students.

K-12 students welcomed back 5 full days/week

PE, Music, Arts, Athletics, Missions and extracurricular

activities resume

Use of some online tools continue

Some enhanced health and cleaning protocols continue

school-wide

Possible Scenario: BC Schools Stage 2

If we cannot return fully by September, we anticipate that DCS

may enter Stage 2, which could include:

K-7: 80-100% in-school

K-7 students welcomed back 4-5 full days/week

PE, Music, Arts, Athletics and extracurricular programs

resume, with enhanced health and cleaning protocols

Online/home-learning program available for families who

desire to keep children home

Continuing health and cleaning protocols school-wide

Gr.8-12: 40-60% in-school

Grade 8-12 students welcomed at school 2-3 full days/week

Online programs/courses facilitate some learning from home

Online program available for students/families who desire to

learn fully at home

Secondary Theatre, Athletics, Missions, Arts and

extracurricular programs resume, with enhanced health and

cleaning protocols

Continuing health and cleaning protocols school-wide

The Government of BC will determine whether schools are in

Stage 1, 2, or the current Stage 3. Regardless of which stage

the BC Government assigns in September, DCS leadership and

teachers will plan in a way that allows us to move between

stages if necessary over the duration of the school year. For

example, secondary students are very likely to continue using

Google Classroom as part of their courses.

We are cautiously optimistic about September’s outlook and

look forward to seeing students at school most of the time.

We’re also excited to see that hard work is being done across

the province for the purpose of resuming school sports, as

athletics programs are an important part of many students’

mental and physical health.

Should you have any questions, we will do our best to answer

them. Please contact Peter Terpstra, Michelle Nederlof, or

Jeremy Tinsley.

Even as the pandemic continues across the world, issues of

systemic racism, discrimination, hatred and violence have en-

tered our social consciousness. Our students need safe places

like our classrooms (both online and in-school) to process these

significant world events and reflect on how we in Duncan, BC,

are not immune.

At DCS, we have sought to create an inclusive and welcoming

environment and raise up compassionate and humble graduates

who are capable of impacting our communities in positive ways.

In light of this, we are grateful for a school that takes seriously

the Micah 6:8 call to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with

our God. We look forward to the day when our world will be

fully redeemed and become a place where all people are equal-

ly loved, valued and cherished as image-bearers of God.

I encourage you to read this thoughtful letter that was written by

our elementary French teacher, Mrs. Debora de Vries-Ouattara,

in which she invites respectful conversations surrounding this

important issue. Mrs. de Vries-Ouattara grew up in Cote D'Ivoire

and has been a member of our community for several years.

Her children also attend DCS.

GRADE 12 GRADUATION JUNE 23, 2020

The community is invited to come to DCS to drive by the grads to celebrate them. Instead of a red carpet, we will be hosting a "drive by" grad reception line prior to the ceremony beginning at 1:15pm. Following the drive by reception line we will be holding a two-part ceremony beginning at 3:00pm. The grad class will be divided in half and will be in two different locations close to DCS. Parents will be able to join their son/daughter at these ceremonies which will follow one right after the other. We will be live-streaming the event as well so that the larger DCS community can be a part of it.

WELCOME

Welcome to Jackie Broughton.

Hi! My name is Jackie Broughton and I am so excited to join the Duncan Christian School community. I have had many wonderful experiences at DCS, and it is a privilege to officially join the school as the new Secondary Art teacher. I started teaching in 2012,

at Lighthouse Christian

Academy, in Langford, BC.

In 2014, my husband and I

moved overseas to teach

at a BC Offshore School in

China. For the past two

years, we have been living

and teaching in the Cowichan Valley. This is also where our son

was born last summer. Cowichan is our home and we are so

blessed to be here.

Over the past eight years, I have taught the arts at the elemen-

tary, middle, and secondary levels. This has given me valuable

experience in developing purposeful art programs that fit the

unique needs of my students and the school community. As an

art teacher, I look for opportunities for my students to explore

and understand important issues in their school and community,

while developing their Core Competencies. Art is a powerful tool

that can help all students, regardless of their ability, to develop

their communication, creativity, and leadership in meaningful

ways.

I chose to become a teacher because I am passionate about

helping young people learn and grow. I believe that successful

learning happens in a safe, supportive, and stimulating environ-

ment, which is what I strive to create for my students. It will be

my great pleasure to support students as they learn and devel-

op in faith at DCS.

I am so grateful to be joining the amazing staff, students, and

families at Duncan Christian School. I look forward to meeting

you next fall!

DCS Principal and Grade 8 Boys Basketball Coach Honoured with

the Brian Craig Memorial Coaching Award The Brian Craig Memorial Award is presented annually. It is awarded to Central Vancouver Island Athletic Association coaches who through coaching techniques & philosophy best epitomize the qualities of Sportsmanship and Fair Play" Jeremy Tinsley has faithfully coached and supported both Girls and Boys basketball players over the past 12 years at Duncan Christian - for the first couple of years he coached girls and then during the past 2 years he has been coaching boys. He has also been a keen and avid supporter of hosting many Island and Provincial Championships that have included soccer, volleyball and basketball. All of Jeremy's players consistently feel honoured and valued as they learn the game and develop their skills. He is a great encourager and motivator. Jeremy's focused, enthusiastic and masterful coaching style is highly respected by his athletes, colleagues, fellow coaches and officials. He totally emphasizes fair play and sportsmanship. A great example of fair play took place during the 2018/2019 season, when he had 18 grade 8/9 boys show up at a home game and he was able to skillfully put them into the game. He had it mathematically worked out so that each player saw a significant amount of playing time and they ended up winning somehow! We have really appreciated the dedication of co-coach Mike Dunn - Jeremy and Mike are a great basketball coaching team that we will definitely miss next year!

June 22-26 and June 29-30 9:00am to 3:00pm School will be closed July 1 for Canada Day and for Summer Break July 2 to August 23. Reopen Monday, August 24.
