A group of seven CBS students flew out to Lourdes on the 25th of May to assist in the care of 60 patients from the Diocese of Ossory. In all 33 secondary school students from the Diocese of Ossory travelled to France with a number of leaders to take part in this annual pilgrimage. CBS leader Anna Ryan was accompanied this year by Mason Clifford, Brian Delaney, Paul Murphy, Jack Langton, David O’ Neill, Keith Ruth and Ciaran Doyle. These Transition year students raised over €3,500 throughout the school year by operating a shop, selling rolls and other refreshments in the school yard during the morning break. The revenue from this enterprise project served to defray the cost of their flights and accommodation. While in Lourdes the boys assisted their leaders over the 3 days bringing their patients to the famous Lourdes baths, attending the masses and the Anointing of the sick ceremonies. As part of the Ossory Youth PProgramme under the auspices of Fr. Sean o Connor, this pilgrimage is an invaluable experience for any young person. We hope all the participants had a fruitful and enjoyable venture to the holy city of Lourdes.

Kilkenny C.B.S. student Gary Cooke has won the trip of a lifetime to the United States of America. Gary will set his compass for Vermont straight after the rigours of his Leaving Cerificate when he flies out of Dublin Airport on June 28th. The flight itinerary itself is interesting ending in Vermont via Toronto and Boston. Gary will spend 12 nights in America, all expenses paid, courtesy of his Award-winning Essay ‘What I Can Bring to This…’. Prompted by CBS teacher Jim Aherne, Gary decided to put pen to paper and enter this National Competition run and sponsored by the Cork-based Company E.I.L.(Experiment in Inter-Cultural Learning). With the guidance of his English teacher Gerard Morrissey and 700 words later, the entry was despatched to Cork. A few weeks later, word arrived to the school that our very own Gary Cooke had been selected with 11 other Irish Students ,out of hundreds of entrants, to represent Ireland at the International Youth Conference in Vermont .At this Conference young people from all over the world convene to engage in a host of seminars, workshops, discussion groups and activities of all sorts concerning youth activism issues and topics. So , who said Essay-writing didn’t pay?? It certainly did in Gary’s case . Gary is the son of Declan and Maura Cooke of Ballybur, Cuffesgrange. Everyone in the C.B.S wishes Gary a wonderful American experience.

The Junior Certificate C.S.PE. students recently enjoyed a morning of Politics and a Seminar on the workings of the Oireachtas . Oireachtas na hEirinn Education Officer,Kathleen McSorly, came to the C.B.S and elucidated our students on the History of our Houses of Parliament and how they operate in modern times. A mock election was staged and the whole Proportional Representation system was explained to the young prospective electorate members present. Kathleen distributed information packs to each student. This was followed by a very informative talk from local Fianna Fail T.D. John McGuinness who gave a blow by blow account on the daily life of an Irish Political representative. All in all, an enjoyable and educational experience for everyone and special thanks to Ms. Evison and Ms. Maher on their behind the scenes work in the C.S.P.E Department.

WORKSHOP

JUNIOR HURLING REPORT

2009/2010

Group Stages

Match 1 vs Good Counsel

CBS Kilkenny outfought and outclassed a much fancied Good Counsel outfit in the opening round played at the Good Counsel grounds. A good start by the CBS forwards meant that they were 1-6 to 0-1 up at the interval. The CBS never took their foot off the gas in the 2nd half and ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 2-24 to 0-6. Best for the CBS were Evan Cody, Danny Bolger, Shane Cassin, Mason Clifford, Robbie Fitzpatrick and Danny Lenihan.

Match 2 vs St. Brendan’s, Birr

The second match saw CBS paired with St. Brendan’s of Birr at Palmerstown. After a tense opening quarter, two goals from Danny Lenihan put the CBS lads into a commanding lead and one they would not relinquish. The final scoreline of 3-16 to 1-3 meant that the CBS advanced to the semi-final versus Colaiste Eoin of Dublin. Best on the day were Ruairi Morrissey, Owen McGrath, Jack Langton and Philly Campion.

Semi-final

Dr. Cullen Park, Carlow was the venue for a semi-final which was tough and intense all through. Colaiste Eoin put the CBS to the pin of their collar but a fine performance from all six backs as well as goalkeeper Brian Cantwell meant the CBS scrapped through on a scoreline of 1-14 to 0-13. As well as the aforementioned, CBS had fine performances in

Shane Cuddihy, Ciaran Doyle, Robbie Fitzpatrick and Danny Lenihan.

Final

Nowlan Park was the venue for the Junior Leinster Hurling Final which saw the CBS take on their old rivals St. Kieran’s College. Both teams traded points early on, however, the physical nature of the St. Kieran’s team soon began to take its toll. The CBS lads fought gallantly to the bitter end and lost nothing in defeat. Each player on the panel played their part during the year when called on, and can be proud of their efforts.

SENIOR HURLING REVIEW

2009/2010

With as strong a panel as has been assembled in the CBS for years, hopes were naturally high at the start of the school year. The League campaign began with two comfortable victories against St. Mary’s Enniscorthy and St. Peter’s Wexford, crushing defeats for both Wexford schools. CBS advanced to the League Final in Nowlan Park in November against St. Kieran’s. Despite a soggy pitch both teams served up a memorable game with Kieran’s snatching a draw with an injury time goal, 3-13 apiece. The replay was not as entertaining but quite tense and physical and despite a dominant final ten minutes CBS went down by 2 points failing to reel in their opponents.

After a rigorous but weather-interrupted Christmas training regime, the panel played numerous challenge games. We faced Westmeath Schools in the Championship opener in Ballycolla, Co. Laois. Emerging 4-14 to 0-8 point victors CBS coasted into a semi-final clash with Dublin kingpins Colaiste Eoin in Athy. A victory meant a Leinster Final appearance and a guaranteed shot at an All-Ireland, regardless of the Leinster Final outcome. The stakes were high. After a bright start CBS went 9 points up on the Dubs, who to their credit, rallied and finished strongly to force extra-time. CBS dominated the first half of extra-time and laid the foundations for eventual victory after an unforgettable struggle throughout the afternoon. Reappearing in a Leinster Final brought a great buzz to life around the school. The fact that it would be an all Kilkenny City affair really captured the imaginations of the locals.

Kieran’s again, Nowlan Park again and alas, again falling short, a 5 point defeat after an inconsistent display. Pucking 15 wides in a Final does not make life easy. Despite defeat, CBS had an opportunity at redemption in an All Ireland Quarter Final against Thurles CBS. The venue was Freshford and the crowd was big. A tired Thurles outfit (3

Page 4: Newsletter Proof 1[1]

Harty Finals) succumbed in the end to a hungrier Kilkenny CBS team. The stage was now set for an All-Ireland Semi against first time Harty winners, Ard Scoil Ris from Limerick City. Two evenly matched teams went toe to toe in a high quality Colleges Semi-final. Ard Scoil dictated the terms early and lead by nine points at one stage. The Limerick students were comfortably ahead at half-time but the CBS rally arrived and with less than 10 minutes to go were only 2 points behind and seemingly in control. A Limerick goal against the run of play and several dubious refereeing decisions saw Ard Scoil into the final by a flattering 5 point margin. A year that promised so much but delivered nothing is a bitter pill to swallow despite some wonderful passages of brilliant hurling from this team in several of their games. The Management team of PJ McCormack, Gerard Morrissey, Seamus Dwyer and Paul O’Donoghue would like to thank all panel members for their cooperation and dedication throughout the year and wish the large cohort of Leaving Cert students on the panel the very best of luck in their exams and beyond. We also acknowledge the massive role of our Captain Richard Doyle who always lead from the front and never flinched in adversity.

Match 2 V. Dublin SouthDraw 2-10, 1-13.A tough intense, match with both sets of backs on top in the first half. C.B.S took a 3 point lead in the second half with a goal from Paul Delahanty. There was a late goal from Dublin South leading to a nervous finish. In the match there were fine performances from Darragh Holohan, Evan Cody, Danny Bolger and Paddy Deegan.

Match 3 V. Laois CollegesAn easy win with strong performances all over the field, especially from the forwards, Gary Kelly, Niall Mullins and Robbie Buckley.

Match 4, Leinster Semi-Final V Dublin SouthA see-saw battle between two evenly matched teams that led to a classic encounter in Palmerstown in this Leinster Semi-Final. A brilliant goal from Sean Moran after a strong run proved to be the winning of the match for C.B.S. With strong performances from Evan Cody, Eoin McGovern, Kevin Galvin and Sean Moran, all contributing to an all round excellent team performance.

Match 5 Leinster Final V. Dublin NorthA cracking game of hurling between two evenly matched teams. The match was close throughout with defences on top, with Even Cody exceptional at full back, ably assisted by tenacious corner backs Kevin Galvin and Huw Lawlor , also putting in fine performances. In the second half, chances were at a premium with some fine scores on from Paddy Deegan and a fine goal from Niall Mullins. In the end C.B.S came up short in a fine battling performance on a scoreline of 1-9 to 0-14.The future of hurling in our school is in safe hands as these young stars rise up through the ranks.

O’SULLIVAN GRABS LEINSTER GOLDC.B.S. student Michael O’Sullivan grabbed the Gold medal in the Leinster Schools Track and Field Finals at the Morton Stadium on Saturday the 22nd May.Michael continued the strong form of our athletes by winning the High Jump in stylish and convincing fashion with a winning 1m 85 effort. He fended off stiff opposition in very warm conditions at the Santry venue.Michael advances to the All-Ireland Finals in June and the whole school wishes him the best of luck in his pursuit of a National title.Another emerging C.B.S. starlet John Murphy qualified for a shot at the All-Ireland Finals by finishing a hugely creditable third in both the 3,000 and 1,500 metres Track events. This was achieved despite a nagging injury and hopefully by the time the Finals come around John will be in tip top shape in the hunt for a National medal.

Senior Rugby Team 2009-2010The loss of several players from last year and injuries to key players meant this year was always going to be difficult for the Senior Rugby Team. And so it proved to be with the team being knocked out of the Leinster Shield in the first round against Athy. In extremely wet and windy conditions the team played to the last minute but in the end just couldn’t keep out Athys’ wingers. The season did not end here however and the Paddy Kenna Rugby Sevens was run throughout April and May. Overall

the competition was very successful with both the runners up final and the Cup final going to sudden death. The trophy was eventually won by Emmet Lynchs’ Team, who narrowly defeated Peter Walshs’ team after a great game. The Rugby Team also entered an Inter School Blitz in May, beating Ballyhale, drawing with St. Kierans College and narrowly losing to the Gael Scoil. The Senior Team did manage to get it hands on some silver ware however, with visits from the Heineken Cup, Six Nations and Triple Crown in October.Well done to all the players who trained hard throughout the year.Senior Rugby Panel 2009-2010Eamon Carroll (C)Emmet LynchKieran OrmondThomas QuigleyPeter WalshJosh MahonyDarren BawlKeith MaloneMichael WalshJames BurkeDermot CadoganLiam McWeyLeo DooleyJack WallaceConor BehanBill HealyGeorge HealyLiam McDonaghJoey DohenyJames EarlyMichael LongJason Coye

Wednesday the 21st of April proved to be a date of particular significance for Kilkenny CBS Athletics, a day that will be recalled for some time to come. PE Teacher Mary Sinnott assembled a raiding party of Track and Field Athletes and headed to Dublin to compete in the Rice Schools Athletics Championships which took place at the Morton Stadium in Santry. The Competition is staged annually and is open to all Christian Brothers Schools from all corners of the island of Ireland. This year over 20 Schools were represented on the day at Ireland’s premier Track and Field venue. The boys from the CBS competed in 7 Track events and 4 Field events at both Under 17 and Senior levels. These guys were not intent on merely taking in the Dublin scenery on an unseasonably sunny April day. They were quickly into their stride and went on to collect a stunning 4 titles out of the available 6 in the Under 17 Track events. Transition Year student John Murphy continued his recent progress by clinching the 1500m and 3000m titles. Ian Boland, David McGeary, Brian Delaney and John Murphy teamed up and bagged the Medley Relay. If Murphy was proving to be the outstanding individual performer, our 4 x 100m Relay team were the day’s outstanding team performers. Stephen Tynan joined forces with Boland, Delaney and McGeary and they annihilated the opposition scorching their way to victory in truly facile fashion. At Senior level CBS had 3 competitors in Brendan Manning(100m and Javelin), Michael O’Sullivan (High Jump) and Peter Walsh (Shot Putt and Javelin). All three acquitted themselves very well and a further 3 titles were secured here. O’Sullivan headed the field in the High Jump and Peter Walsh collected two ‘golds’ in the Shot and Javelin. The

David McGeary, Brendan Manning, Brian Delaney, Stephen Tynan, John Murphy, Michael O’Sullivan, Peter Walsh and Ian Boland

extent of these boys’ success is remarkable when one considers that collectively they won no less than 7 of the 11 Competitions they participated in. Well done to each and everyone of them on an outstanding display of talent and determination. Congrats also to Ms. Sinnott for her efforts.

KILKENNY C.B.S. ATHLETES TO THE FOUR IN RICE SCHOOLS COMPETITION

ORCHESTRA GIOVANILE de FIRENZE drop in to CBSAmid all the recent consternation and disruption brought about by the volcanic ash that decimated European flight schedules, a beacon of Italian flair shone through the gloom. The ‘Orchestra Giovanile de Firenze (Florence Youth Orchestra)’ came to Kilkenny before the Icelandic Volcano erupted to play some concerts in Kilkenny and Galway .There was a magical evening in the Black Abbey among the highlights of their visit. The 18 musicians and their leaders were accommodated around Kilkenny by several host families. When it came to pack instruments and luggage and return to Italy the inevitable and expected news filtered through that no flights were available on their departure date. The group were stranded for at least another week. The opportunity to invite them to the CBS was quickly seized and the Orchestra assembled to play in the school gym on Thursday morning the 22nd of April. All CBS music students and teachers gathered to form a sizeable audience. The young Italian orchestra conducted by Janet Zadow enthralled their audience in spectacular fashion. For over an hour they filled the April morning air with Vivaldi, Agar and Mozart. On completion of their concert they were greeted by rapturous applause from a very appreciative and enthusiastic audience. They were then joined on stage by Kilkenny CBS violinist par excellence, Patrick Rafter who had rushed from doing his French Oral to perform for our guests. Patrick amazed fellow students and Italian musicians alike with a wonderfully skilful improvisation of Monti’s ‘Zarda’ displaying every conceivable skill on the violin, as he did so. This guy is in the ‘one in a million’ category for sure. All in all an unforgettable morning of classical music that swept everyone away, showing that the power of music to bring people together is as strong as it ever has been. Our guests were treated to light refreshments and coffee in the Home Economics room after the traditional presentation of a bouquet of flowers. The CBS community would like to extend its warmest gratitude to Janet Zadow (Conductor), Gaia Delfi (violin), Franceisco Cannata (cello) Matteo Brogioni (viola), Tereza Manzini (violin), Roberto Seiditta (cello), Lorenzo Raffaelli (violin), Giula Rosa Ciatli (violin), Elena Marcucci (violin), Andrea Pelligrini (viola), Veronica

“Comórtas Clár Radío Gael Linn 2010”

“Irish Radio Competition 2010”

Once again the students of Transition Year in the C.B.S Secondary School Kilkenny have found themselves in the spotlight. But this time it was not on the stage, field or podium, but

through the “Comórtas Clár Radío Gael Linn 2010”

A classroom powered by the enthusiasm of teacher Ms. Nolan-Kennedy helped enter the above competition with their humorous, musical and oft times satirical radio sketch show.

The sketch in question was a ‘skit’ of the All-Ireland Talent Show, an idea provided by the

imagination of the mixed Transition Year Irish class.

The sketch consisted of a number of performances such as a melodic Irish tune written and performed by John Treacy, Gary O’Neill, David Galster and Philip Corr.

Other performances included a rap by Joe Keohane andA deliberately, poorly executed “Amhrán na bhFiann‘ disastrously sung by

Eoin Kavanagh and Ivor O’Brien.

Judgment and feedback were comically provided by Alan Doyle (Simon Cowell),Gary O’Neill (Pat Shortt), and Eoin McGrath with Seb Ryan (John and Edward).

The result of it all was a twenty minute laugh-out-loud sketch show which reached 3rd place in the Roinn B category of the competition and received a staggering amount of

money considering the economic climate!

On May 21st 2010, Alan Doyle, Gary O’Neill, Killian Walsh, Ivor O’Brien, Colm Walsh, Eoin Kavanagh and Eoin McGrath represented the TY Irish class on

KCLR’s very popular ‘Sue Nunn Show’. Article by: Gary O’Neill

Seactain na Gaeilge- CBS Kilkenny10th-16th March 2010Keeping the native Irish language in full spirit in the CBS Secondary Kilkenny as we embraced Seachtain na Gaeilge by participating in a number of Irish language-themed events throughout the week in our school.

Daily events included playing Irish music on the intercom each morning as well as handing out delicious Cadbury’s Crème Eggs to students in the yard during break if they were found to be speaking in Irish.

A certain topic was chosen each day to be the theme. These included Sport, Music, Film and many more. The days activities were based on these themes. Activities such as a ‘Tráth na gceist’, poster exhibition on a theme of Irish culture, a game of bingo were all set up for the 1st years on the Wednesday that started Seachtain na Gaeilge. There were more ‘Tráth na gceist’ for the different years throughout the week. A number of Irish films such as ‘The Secret of Kells’ and ‘The Wind That Shakes The Barley’ were screened at lunch time. Various sports games were organized, gaelic football, soccer and others, which

Page 8: Newsletter Proof 1[1]

were played as Gaeilge. Students performed Irish music during lunchtime in our ‘Sesiún Ceol’ while an entertained audience watched on.

On the day before St. Patrick’s Day, there was a ‘Green Day’, where students wore green clothes in aid of a trip to Lesotho by a local organization.

Overall, we found that the week was a great success. We greatly improved our Irish-speaking skills and we hope to keep the tradition of our native language going.

C.B.S. Paris Trip 2010The city of Light was once again the scene of the C.B.S. trip this year. 31 students from First and Second year set off on April 19th for a four day séjourn accompanied by teachers: Mr. Jim Ahern, Ms Nuala Walton, Ms Catriona O’Brien and Ms Mary Meaney. On the itinerary were exciting visits to La Tour Eiffel, L’Arc de Triomphe and the Stade de France. The trip also included the superb views and commentary from the Bateau Parisien. Passing serenely under the Pont Neuf, students heard of the origins and evolution of this magnificent city. This was complemented beautifully with an excellent guided tour of the city given by our guide from Joe Walsh Tours. Notre Dame, with its world famous Bells, Rose window, gargoyles and flying buttresses did not fail to impress the students with its call to meditation. No trip to Paris would be complete without visiting the Sacré-Coeur and the beautiful streets around the Place du Tertre. The artistic ambiance of Montmartre inspired the students so much so that two intrepid francophiles burst into song before the gathered crowds on the steps of the basilica. ‘Kilkenny’s Got Talent Audition 2010’ minus Simon Cowell. A trip to Paris would not be complete without the delights of Disneyland Paris and its spectacular attractions. Thrilling rides on Thunder Mountain, Star Tours and the parade down Main Street U.S.A. were enchanted all present. So much to do, so much to take in. Excellent hospitality and accommodation was once again found at the Hotel FIAP Jean Monnet. The boys will relive their trip to Paris for many months and years ahead.

TRANSITION YEAR COOKING DEMO

Former C.B.S student Gareth Byrne returned to his alma mater to demonstrate his culinary expertise to a group of TY students at the invitation of our new Home Economics teacher Ms. Nell Ormond. Gareth is a successful restaurateur in Kilkenny and regularly delights his clientele at his charming food emporium ‘Campagne’ on Gas House Lane. Once again Mr. Byrne, aided and abetted by his assistant staff and some enthusiastic students, cooked up the proverbial storm. A selection of dishes including an incredible risotto was followed by some serious desserts. There was no shortage of willing volunteer tasters from the assembled students and staff. We would like to extend our gratitude to Gareth and his staff for generously giving up his time off and visiting our school.

UNDER 14 GAELIC FOOTBALL

The under 14 Gaelic Football team turned out in big numbers for intense training over a 16 week period. The season opened with a Man of the Match performance from Sean Moran scoring 2-3 from play setting up a great 4-11 to 2-6 win against St.Kieran’s.CBS Kilkenny continued their success with a hard fought win away to Castlecomer (0-5 to 0-2) with a fine second half attacking display from Dean Cornally. In the Third Round, CBS Kilkenny provided talent and passion with a 10-6 to 1-7 win over Heywood (Laois). Paul Delahanty demonstrated individual brilliance with 3-1 from play. In the quarter-final Niall Mullins captained the side to victory against St.Farnan’s with Darragh Houlihan breaking into the team to score 3-2 and set up a semi-final against last year’s winners Wicklow DLS. Kilkenny CBS saved their best performance to overcome last year’s champions in a committed, physical game in Dr.Cullen Park. Numbers 1 to 15 collaborated as a team and Evan Cody took the reins to drive on the team to overcome a three point deficit and win by 4 points to set up a final against Carnew (Wicklow). Kilkenny CBS came into this ‘C’ final looking for back to back Championships after winning the ‘D’ final in the previous year. Sean Moran led from the front scoring 3 goals in the first half which left the team one point behind with the advantage of the wind to come in the second half. CBS pushed onto the front foot scoring 2 fine points from Dylan Hillman and Brian Fitzpatrick to go one point ahead with 10 minutes to go. But with 10 minutes remaining lots of dubious refereeing decisions and a blatant square ball goal for Carnew, proved to be unfortunate and decisive in the end, with the final score 3-4 to 2-10. The ‘Player of the Year Award’ went to the outstanding Niall Mullins at full back. As the team manager I would like to thank the entire team panel who fought gallantly to prove victorious against teams from Kildare, Laois, and Wicklow to become 2010 South Leinster ‘C’ Runners-Up. Mr.Monaghan.

UNDER 16 GAELIC FOOTBALL

The Under 16 Gaelic Football Team was formed due to huge enthusiasm and constant requests for a school team to be formed. There was great leadership and discipline in training and this determination carried the team through Round 1 of the Championship against Ballyhale (5-8 to 0-4). Sean Maguire was immense on the day kicking 1-4 (0-3f). In the Second Round Kilkenny CBS travelled to CBS Carlow away. Kilkenny, led by Captain David McGeary, produced a master class in accuracy and hand passing moves throughout the field until the final whistle. Jack Langton at corner back swept up every attack and his clever distribution of the ball was easy on the eye. In the Quarter-Final CBS Kilkenny fell behind by 1-4 to 0-1 after a 10 minute nap against Wexford CBS. The team got out of the blocks then with some fine scores from Niall Mullins (1-3) and Robbie Corcoran (2-3). The team gelled together with some fine fielding and direct passing from Eoin Fennelly, Shane Cassin and Ciaran Doyle (0-2). CBS drove on to win 5-10 to 1-4. Last years winners Rathangan (Kildare) were the fancied side to win the semi-final against CBS Kilkenny who had lost free taker and top scorer Sean Maguire to injury.Sean had scored a total of 2-14 up to this match. The game was a classic and the play went from end to end for the first half ending all square (1-7 to 1-7). Both teams moved up to fifth gear for final ten minutes of the game. Rathangan scored a great goal which was reciprocated by goal of the season from Joe Keohane taking a shot on the run which he fired in with the outside of the boot from 30 yards. Both teams went defensive and in the finale, two quick injury time points from Rathangan left Kilkenny CBS heartbroken. The Under 16 team were totally committed to training both mentally and physically in all climatic conditions and even attended when away on TY Work Experience. They gave an exhibition of how Kilkenny Gaelic Football should be played at Premier level against a top class Kildare outfit. Congratulations to Sean Scott the Under 16 Footballer who displayed discipline and fine defensive skills in achieving his targets.Mr.Monaghan

Student Council Review

The Students’ Council has always been a part of the pride and unity associated within the CBS as we, the students, get the chance to have our say with the running of the school to make it a better place for those already enrolled in the school and for those who will be welcomed to it in the future.

Introduction

Student Council 2010

The Students’ Council Elections took place in early 2010 in the CBS under the vigilant auspices of some Transition Year students. Two students would represent each year (ie; two 1st year representatives, two 2nd year representatives and so on) all the way up to 6th year. When the Students’ Council was selected there were further elections within the council, under the guidance of the Student Liaison Officer Ms.Nolan-Kennedy, to elect a P.R.O, a Chairperson, a Secretary and a Treasurer. After speeches given by the various students running for these positions, it was decided that the treasurer would be David Hutchinson, the P.R.O would be Gary O’Neill, the Secretary would be Ciarán Nash and the Chairperson would be Joe Murphy.

The Council began meetings and discussions as soon as all class representatives were elected. These meetings decided on how the Council would approach problems and issues arising within the school.Throughout the year thus far the Students’ Council have managed to introduce a brand new vending machine, undertook a Meningitis Phone Recycling Campaign, introduced an I.S.S.U Scholar Card Scheme, kick-started the organisation behind the School Talent Competition, raised money for the school’s long running Zambia-Fund through the ‘Chnage-4-Change’ appeal, organised activities for ‘Seachtain na Gaeilge’ and much more. The Student Council were also invited to attend former principal, Mr.Curran’s Farewell Mass and even the party that followed that ceremony. Even though the academic year is almost over, the enthusiasm and imagination of this year’s Students’ Council has laid the foundations for more change, more fun and more ideas to the school until the final bell rings and the sun is beckoning for the Summer holidays, until September comes back around again in 2010, where more hard-working CBS students will be elected for next year’s Student Council. ‘ Mol an Oige, agus Tiocfaidh Siad’.

The Concern Debates gives students the opportunity to research and debate issues that affect those living in the developing world. A group of transition years represented the school in this competition and won 3 out of 4 debates in the league phase, qualifying for the national knockout phase. Leinster Schools Debating Competition

The competition is the largest non-sporting competition in Ireland and has been running for the past twenty five years. This year two 6th year students entered the competition. Unfortunately the team was split leaving Eamonn Carroll as an individual speaker, in which he managed to progress to the Quarter Final stages. The hosts of this competition were UCD’s Literary and Historical Society and Trinity’s Historical Society. A big congratulation is owed to the two boys for taking part in this very prestigious competition.
