From the Principal’s Desk...

Hello Parents:

I would like to congratulate all of our seniors, and those senior parents, that

have been working so hard towards graduation this May. At this point in

time, we have 814 potential graduates this year! The class of 2015 has the

chance of SMASHING the graduation record set last year of 608!

Parents, I also encourage you to support your senior students as they near

the finish line. They need to continue to work hard and keep their grades

up as the end draws near. I truly hope all of our seniors make it to our

upcoming graduation celebration!

Also, I would like to thank Dr. Popp and the East Aurora School Board of

Education. Without their help and support, it would be impossible to be in

this position again, this year, to set another graduation record. We set the

bar high last year and now, my second year as Principal of East Aurora High

School, we will be setting it again! A new graduation total record!

Lastly, as our seniors near the end of their senior year, I have some

important reminders:

Reminder, all seniors must accumulate a total of forty hours of

community service in order to graduate in May. Students should see

Courtney Monaghan, if they have any questions about their status.

Reminder, May 15th will be the prom date this year. Seniors should

remember that prom is a privilege, not a right. Seniors must continue to

finish the year in good-standing if they wish to attend the prom this

year.

Reminder, May 13th and 14

Reminder, May 20st will be the senior awards night in the auditorium

starting promptly at 7:00 p.m.

Me gustaría felicitar a todos nuestros estudiantes senior y a los padres de

estos estudiantes que han estado trabajando arduamente para la graduación

de mayo. ¡Hasta este momento del año, tenemos 814 posibles graduandos!

¡La clase de 2015 tuvo la oportunidad de SOBREPASAR el récord de

graduación establecida el año pasado de 608 graduandos!

Reminder, May 21st, all senior fees should be paid in full. If seniors owe money, they may pay it

in the main office of the high school. Diplomas will not be given to those seniors who owe

money.

Reminder, May 21st will be graduation rehearsal day. Graduation rehearsal is required, senior

graduates MUST attend if they wish to participate in the ceremony, no exceptions. Rehearsal

will run from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium.

Reminder, May 22nd

will be our graduation date this year. Seniors need to arrive in the

auditorium by 6:00 p.m. The graduation ceremony will begin promptly at 7:00 pm.

The Community Advisory Committee meets at 12:00 noon on the second Tuesday of every month. Each month, a different topic or program is discussed, and input from the community members in attendance is solicited.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the programs and services offered to students at East High, and a chance to provide feedback. If you would like to join us, please contact Kim Mundt in the main office at (630) 299-8135.

The East Aurora High School Social Work Team would like to send a big

thank you to the class of 1988. Wendy Wischoeffer, Sally Trujillo, and

Frances Ayla, on behalf of the class, dropped off a generous check as a

class gift, in the amount of $1,350 to help support the East High School Food Pantry. The funds will

be used to replenish items for the pantry as needed. Thank you class of 1988!

East Aurora High School PTA had a good basketball season. The regular games and the state tournament games are now over. Many thanks to all who helped us with the games, both PTA members and students. We have also provided snacks for the teachers at the February Parent-Teacher Conference night which we consider 'helping the staff to serve the parents'.

At this writing we are not quite sure what our April-May items will be so will have to post them in a later newsletter.

Many thanks to our members this year, parents and teachers! Just joining helps PTA fulfill its mission of helping students, families, teachers, and schools! PTA membership is open to anyone. Principal Kafele is a highly-regarded urban public school educator in New Jersey. For over twenty years, Principal Kafele distinguished himself in the classroom and as a school leader. As an elementary school teacher in East Orange, NJ, he was selected as the East Orange School District and Essex County Public Schools Teacher-of-the-Year. As a principal, he led the transformation of four

different schools, including “the mighty” Newark Tech, which went from a low-performing school in need of improvement to recognition by U.S. News and World Report Magazine as one of America’s best high schools.

Currently, Principal Kafele is one of the most sought-after speakers for transforming the attitudes of at-risk student populations in America. He is the author of seven books on this topic which includes his national best-seller, Closing the Attitude Gap. He is also the recipient of over one hundred educational, professional and community awards which include the National Alliance of Black School Educators Hall of Fame Award, the Milken National Educator Award, the New Jersey Education Association Award for Excellence and the City of Dickinson, Texas proclaiming February 8, 1998 as Baruti Kafele Day.

Principal Kafele brought his empowering message to East Aurora High School on February 19, 2015. El Director Kafele es profesor de escuela pública urbana, altamente prestigiado en Nueva Jersey por más de veinte años, el Director Kafele se destacó por su desempeño en el salón de clase y como líder escolar. East Aurora High School (EAHS) students are well into the second semester of the 2014-2015 school year and although the end of the school year is fast-approaching, it is important for you, as a parent or guardian, to encourage your son or daughter to attend class regularly and to be on time.

In the first full week of the semester (January 26 – January 30) alone, 4,167 EAHS students were tardy to class and 1,253 students received in-school suspensions. As a parent or guardian, you play a vital role in your child’s schooling and can help EAHS create a culture where punctuality and attendance are of the upmost importance by:

Emphasizing that without attending class, your child will get behind on his or her learning o Remember: in-class learning is essential in optimizing your child’s educational development. If he or she

is not in class, he or she will not learn

Refusing invalid excuses for why your child should be late or absent from school o If you know your child is using an invalid excuse to be late or absent from school, refuse to call the

attendance office on his or her behalf to excuse the tardy or absence

Avoiding the scheduling of medical appointments/vacations during school hours o If a medical appointment must be scheduled during school hours, make sure it’s okay for your child to

return to school after the appointment and drop him or her off at school o Please note that vacations are not considered an excused absence

Supporting our attendance and tardy policies o Parents or guardians should report absences to the attendance office as soon as possible using the

attendance hotline at (630) 299-8111 o For every unexcused absence, parents or guardians will receive a call home from the attendance office o If your child is tardy five times to a single class, he or she will receive a detention with that teacher for

either before school or after school o If your child is tardy 10 or more times to a single class, he or she will receive a referral (minimum 50

minutes after-school)

As we near the end of the school year the Tomcat Career Center remains in full effect assisting students as

they navigate through their search of post-secondary options. March was our designated ―Career Madness

Month.‖ We were able to welcome many professionals to talk about their careers and their various journeys.

We have been holding many career

exploration workshops leading us to our

2015 Career Expo April 16th

in the field

house. This event will help our students

learn about the magnitude of career paths

they can choose from. We hope it will also

allow them to understand that their career

will not remain stagnant, but can change

through the years.

We also have upcoming college campus

visits (see calendar on the right).

Participating in college visits is one of the

most beneficial tools in selecting the best

college/university. There are about 4,000

colleges and universities in the United States

which can make selecting the right school

challenging, but there are many resources

available to make this choice smoother. We

encourage students to attend one of the

schedule campus visits and/or schedule an

individual visit with their parents and their

school(s) of interest.

We are also very eager for our upcoming Annual Decision Day celebration which will be held on Friday,

May 1st. May 1

st is the national day for students to select the college/university they will be attending in the

fall. Every year East Aurora High School and the Illinois College Advising Corps work together to provide

students with a celebratory event for graduating seniors who will be pursuing post-secondary education.

Students who will be attending a 2-year college, 4-year university, trade/vocational program or enlist in one

of the military branches are welcome to attend the May 1st Decision Day event. Students will receive shirts,

free food, and be entered to win raffle prizes. Here at East Aurora High School we are very proud of our

students and the work they put in towards their future. Decision Day is a way we like to commend our

students for a job well done. We are proud of you Class of 2015!

As always we welcome all students in the Tomcat Career Center as we have many resources available to aid

students in their endeavors towards post-secondary education. There is a career path for everyone. Mr.

Rathje and Miss Bautista are available to assist students in finding the right path for them.

A medida que nos aproximamos al final del año escolar del Centro de profesión Tomcat, permanece en

pleno efecto asistiendo a los estudiantes a navegar en su búsqueda de opciones para después de la

secundaria. Marzo fue designado como el ―Mes de la locura profesional‖. Pudimos darles la bienvenida a

muchos profesionales para hablar sobre sus profesiones y diversas experiencias.

nuestra Exposición profesional 2015, el 16

de abril en field house. Este evento ayudará

a nuestros estudiantes a aprender sobre la

profesión no permanecerá estancada, sino

que puede cambiar en el transcurso de los

años.

También tenemos las próximas visitas a los

Comité de asesoría universitaria de Illinois, trabajan en colaboración para proveer a los estudiantes un

evento de celebración para los estudiantes graduandos senior, quienes ejercerán una educación post-

secundaria. Los estudiantes que vayan asistir al colegio de 2 años, universidad de 4 años, programa de

comercio/vocacional o se enliste a una de las ramas militares son bienvenidos para asistir al evento del Día

de la Decisión, este 1 de mayo. Los estudiantes recibirán camisetas, comida gratis y participarán en una rifa

de premios. Aquí, en la Escuela Secundaria del Este de Aurora estamos muy orgullosos de nuestros

estudiantes y el trabajo que dedican hacia su futuro. El día de la decisión es una manera de elogiar a nuestros

estudiantes por su buen desempeño. ¡Estamos muy orgullosos de ustedes, Clase 2015!

The World Cultures will be adopting the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards. Some teachers in the department have already been trained, and more professional development will be offered for teachers throughout the summer. Teachers in the Social Studies Department will spend time aligning the C3 Standards to the current curriculum.

Students in French 2 classes will visit the Art Institute of Chicago this month. Students have spent time studying Impressionist Art and will have the opportunity to see several pieces of art in person. Students in French 3 and Advanced Placement French will attend a production of Les Miserables at the Paramount. This is a follow up to studying the French Revolution and the subsequent rebuilding of the French government.

The English Department in support of the District initiative of Inspiring Learners has implemented a

summer reading initiative for all students enrolled in Honors or AP courses for the 2015-2016 school year.

All students enrolled in these courses will read at least one book from the approved list during the summer.

The list will be distributed through students’ English classes at the high school or their middle school

Language Arts classes, and it is also available on the school home page under the link, summer reading.

Students can check-out the book of their choice, fiction or non-fiction, through their English teacher or at

their Aurora Library branch.

It is important to us to ensure that students maximize their academic potential. The ―summer effect‖ on

student achievement is well documented. Students who do not read through the summer suffer a noted

decrease in reading skills.

In September, all students

will take an assessment that

will measure their Lexile

level. A Lexile measure is a

valuable piece of information

about an individual's reading

ability. The Lexile measure is

shown as a number with an

"L" after it — 880L is 880

Lexile.

A student gets his or her

Lexile reader measure from

a reading test or program. For

example, if a student receives

an 880L on her end-of-grade

reading test, she is an 880

Lexile reader. Higher Lexile

measures represent a higher level of reading ability. A Lexile reader measure can range from below 200L for

beginning readers to above 1600L for advanced readers. Readers who score at or below 0L receive a BR for

Beginning Reader.

Students can take measures to improve their reading score by selecting texts that challenge them. Higher-

level books provide a great opportunity for reading growth. If a student is highly motivated to read a

particular book, he or she will attempt to read that book regardless of its Lexile level. Books above a reader's

Lexile level can help to stimulate growth when its topic is of extreme interest to the reader. It is our goal that

high-achieving students will take ownership of their Lexile measure and seek out harder books to challenge

themselves during the summer.

iniciativa de lectura en verano para todos los estudiantes inscritos en los cursos de honores o nivel avanzado

para el año escolar 2015-2016. Todos los estudiantes inscritos en estos cursos leerán al menos un libro de la

lista aprobada durante el verano. La lista se distribuirá entre los estudiantes de las clases de inglés en la

It has been a busy month in the Family and Consumer Science Department. FCCLA has 13 students completing at the state level. Eleven students will be traveling to Springfield in April for competition in Fashion Construction and Culinary, which includes cake and cookie decorating and preparing salads. Two students will be competing in Chicago at Kendall College over Spring break in Culinary competition.

The Fashion and Fabric classes will be attending a fashion show in March that is presented by The Illinois Institute of Art. The fashion show is produced 100% by the students. They produce, organize and do everything that is required for a fashion show. Students are given the opportunity to ask questions after the fashion show.

The Science Department has also been busy this month. Students from Human Structure & Function will have the opportunity to travel to Northern Illinois University to attend the Anatomy Short Course led by professors in the Biological Sciences Department. The AP Biology classes will be traveling to the Field Museum to get to get a backstage tour of the DNA Discover Lab. There they will have the opportunity to spend time with scientists and visit a professional laboratory.

Este mes el departamento de Ciencia al consumidor y familia ha estado muy ocupado. FCCLA tiene 13 estudiantes compitiendo a nivel estatal. Congratulations to the ESL/Bilingual nominees for Student of the

Month: Francisca Catsellanos and Estefania Galicia! The teachers

got together and nominated these two kind, helpful, hard-working

and ambitious students!

In the ESL and Bilingual program, students study the subjects they

need in order to graduate. In Sheltered American History, Mr.

Rodriguez' students recently analyzed a "corrido." Corridos, which

are a kind of ballad, reflect the unique perspective and remarkable

challenges of working-class people from the United States and

Mexico. The corrido is a primary source based on oral tradition

that spans nearly two centuries, and serves as a window to our

history. Mr. Cardenas' class is studying the Great Depression and

FDR's New Deal programs. The main activity will ask students to evaluate the New Deal by participating in a

Structured Academic Controversy. In collaborative groups, students will use evidence from primary sources to

determine whether the New Deal was a success or failure. By making a claim and supporting it with evidence,

students are developing powerful thinking skills. Working students are benefiting from a unit in Consumer

Education about taxes. They will analyze various tax forms and complete the 1040EZ form, experiencing a

real-life connection through exposure to key materials and information.

In Mrs. Palmer’s Sophomore English, students are reading Walter Dean Myers’ Sunrise Over Fallujah, a novel

about a young man who joins the Army during the Iraq War. Students are writing argument essays in which

they take a position and defend it with evidence from the novel. Students have to identify themselves as a

pro-war “hawk” or an anti-war “dove.” With the help of sample essays and outlines, the students have a

clear idea of how to begin their essay. In preparation for reading this book, Mrs. Palmer invited Mr.

Mihovilovich, a social studies teacher in the Freshman Center, to speak to the classes. He completed two

tours of Iraq in the Marines. He brought in pictures from his time there and shared many personal stories

with our students. Students were motivated to ask questions and try to make sense of what it would be like

to be at war.

The highlight of the month is the Marksmanship Team who had two teams finish 9th and 10th at Navy nationals respectively. There are over 650 Navy JROTC units nationwide and East Aurora had two teams qualify this year. The 9th place East Aurora red team of Giovanni Gutierrez, Luis Nevarez, Carlos Lechuga, and Heman Magana finished with the same overall score as the 10th place East Aurora black team of David Campos, Jose Arres, Austin Martinez and Jose Ramos. In marksmanship the tie breaker is the number of bull’s eyes and on that basis East Aurora red was able to edge the black team. Giovanni Gutierrez finished 10th nationally in the individual completion and will advance to the All-Service National Meet. He will compete with the best from over 4,000 Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force units representing schools both nationwide and overseas.

The Drill Team competed in two drill meets during the past month. The team finished first overall in the Chicago land Championships held at Arlington Heights Ill. First place was achieved in all five varsity events. The varsity team also did a warm-up meet at Marmion Military Academy. The meet at Marmion is a different format since it is an Army school. The format proved difficult for the East High Cadets but the Unarmed Exhibition team came home with a second place trophy. The Junior Varsity teams traveled to a varsity drill meet at Pike High School in Indianapolis Indiana. The team finished 2nd in color guard and 4th in unarmed exhibition.

The Brain Brawl team competed in the Westinghouse High School Open and the Physical Fitness team finished 2nd place at a fitness meet hosted by Proviso West high school. The color guard team stayed busy

as there were a number of high visibility ceremonies this month. The month started with a presentation held by the Commanding Officer if the USS Illinois. He thanked the local vets for their support and answered many questions about the submarine. The team also performed at the Black History month celebration in the East High School Auditorium. Principal Baruti Kafaele was the guest speaker at the event which was a wonderful evening for everyone who attended.

Lo más destacado del mes es el Equipo de puntería el cual tuvo dos equipos que finalizaron en 9no y 10mo lugar en la competencia nacional de la Marina, respectivamente. Existen más de 650 unidades de la marina JROTC a nivel nacional y el Este de Aurora tuvo dos equipos que calificaron este año. El 9no lugar del equipo rojo del Este de Aurora de Giovanni Gutiérrez, Luis Nevarez, Carlos Lechuga y Heman Magaña concluyeron con el mismo resultado general que el 10mo lugar del equipo negro del Este de Aurora de David Campos, José Arres, Austin Martínez y José Ramos. En puntería, el partido de desempate es el

número del tiro al blanco y la base en que el equipo rojo del Este de Aurora pudo superar al equipo negro. Giovanni Gutiérrez terminó en 10mo lugar a nivel nacional en la terminación individual y avanzará al encuentro nacional All-Service. Competirá con los mejores de más de 4,000 miembros del Ejército, Cuerpo de la Marina y las unidades de la Fuerza Armada, representando a las escuelas nacionalmente y fuera del país.

What’s going on in physical education?

While moving towards a fitness-based curriculum, not only were our

fitness classes introduced to the Tomcat Fitness Center in the 3rd

quarter, but also our Fitness and Sports teaching block taught by

Ms. Los, Ms. VanBramer, and Mr. Torres. Our entire PE program was

tested using the FitnessGram10 module in the push-up, curl-up, and

PACER test, which measures cardiovascular endurance.

We'd like all our parents to become familiar with the criterion

Our fitness based curriculum focuses on the 5 health related fitness components and the 6 skill related fitness

components. In all, there are 11 Components of Physical Fitness. These include body composition, agility,

balance, and muscle endurance; among others. These are used to set individual SMART goals in our fitness

and athletic conditioning courses taught by Ms. Peara, Mr. Cholewa, and Mr. Eversole.

Students units for March and April in our racket sports block include recreational games like bowling,

badminton, and tennis taught by Ms. Kozurek, Mr. Kukuc, and Mr. Cholewa. Our team sports classes are

taught by Mr. Jeffries, Mr. Rohfls, Ms. VanBramer, Mr. Eversole, and Ms. Los and those classes will conclude

the 4th quarter with soccer and softball. Our fitness and sports block which completed floor hockey will also

have the opportunity to enjoy our recreational games unit and conclude with tennis which is taught by Mr.

Torres, Ms. VanBramer, and Ms. Los.

Our freshman curriculum taught by Mr. Torres, Mr. Bryant, and Mr. Begich includes the entire physical

education spectrum ranging from basketball all the way to fitness units!

Ms. Patkus is in charge of the PE Leaders program where students assist PE teachers with class rules, routines,

and procedures such as attendance, equipment, and the opportunity to participate in multiple blocks of

physical education class! The Leaders program is available to juniors who apply as sophomores and MUST

be recommended by their PE teacher! These are the best of the best in physical education!

We'd like to thank parents for their support at parent teacher conferences in February as well!

The Tomcat newspaper staff has been working hard to cover

all the exciting events happening throughout the school,

including the talent show, band concerts, choral concerts, art

highlight local talents and achievements through EAHS. In an

Soccer Coaches Nathan Parry and Krystina Leyva worked with University of Illinois College Advisor Guadalupe Bautista to arrange for 31 of East High’s current boys and girls soccer players to visit Illinois Wesleyan and Illinois State Universities. For many of these students, this was their first exposure to campus visits. Despite the wind and cold, the players had a blast. They were able to start seeing how academics and athletics work in a college setting, and pushed themselves to think about their future! Many of these students are attending the Saturday ACT sessions and are really in post-secondary planning mode. The group even had the pleasure of ISU’s President photo-bombing the group picture!

Los entrenadores de fútbol, Nathan Parry y Krystina Leyva trabajaron con el asesor universitario de la Universidad de Illinois, Guadalupe Bautista para organizar a 31 jugadores de fútbol, hombres y mujeres, de la Secundaria del Este para

visitar las Universidades Wesleyan e Illinois State. Para muchos de estos estudiantes, ésta fue su primera exposición de visitas a campos universitarios. A pesar del viento y el frío, los jugadores se divirtieron. ¡Pudieron empezar a ver cómo funciona el ámbito académico y los deportes en el ambiente universitario y se motivaron pensando en su futuro! East Aurora High School’s Habitat for Humanity Club made

a trip to Feed My Starving Children last month. Along with

the other groups there, they packed enough meals to feed

57 children for a year! Our East High students have also

raised money to make a sizeable donation to cover some

of the cost of these meals. 21 Tomcats represented EAHS,

along with teachers Amanda Guidice, Jessica Bergmann,

and Melanie Kleimola.

El pasado mes, el Club Hábitat para la humanidad de la

Escuela Secundaria del Este de Aurora, realizó un viaje a

Feed My Starving Children. ¡Junto a otros grupos, empacaron

suficientes alimentos para nutrir a 57 niños(as) por un

año! Nuestros estudiantes de la secundaria del Este,

también recaudaron dinero para lograr una cuantiosa

donación y así cubrir parte del costo de estos alimentos.

East Aurora High School senior Tim Young Jr. won the state

championship in wrestling on Saturday evening, February

21st

. Young won a 7-2 decision, capping a nearly undefeated

senior season.

“I’m so happy for Tim Young,” said East Aurora High School

Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Dennis Renner. “He

is a great wrestler and an outstanding person. He is one of

the most respectful and humble athletes I have ever known.

He deserves all the accolades and admiration that comes

with this championship.”

After falling behind 2-0 early in the first period of the 195-

pound weight class match, Young shut out his opponent the

rest of the way. The wrestlers were tied 2-2 at the end of the

first period, and Young led 5-2 after the second.

Young told the Beacon-News that the key to his title was:

“Hard work and no days off.”

The state championship concludes an incredible year for

Young. Last season, he finished fourth at sectionals,

narrowly missing a chance to go downstate.

Over the summer, he earned a national title in Greco-Roman wrestling. He was named the Outstanding

Wrestler at the FILA Cadet Nationals held May at the University of Akron.

Based on that performance, Young was selected as one of three wrestlers to compete in the FILA Cadet

World Championships in Slovakia. Young finished fifth in Slovakia, the top performance by a U.S.

wrestler.

Young finished his senior season with 39 wins and only one loss. He was the regional and sectional

champion in the 195-pound weight class, and runner up in the Upstate Eight Conference Meet.

Young advanced to the state finals with a 10-4 decision Friday night in the State Farm Arena on the

University of Illinois campus. It was Young’s second win of the day. On Friday afternoon, he posted a

dominating 19-9 win in the quarterfinals match. He started the tournament Thursday by earning a

technical fall against his opponent in 72 seconds.

Young is the school’s first state wrestling champion since 1983.

H.E.R.O is a career orientated club that

connects young people to their options and

skills for success in careers, families, and

communities. It is an interrelated program

between school and work that encourages

students to prepare for career success and

recognizes members, who create projects to

strength leadership skills while on the job. The

following H.E.R.O. members competed this

year at sectionals and qualified for state

FCCLA is an acronym for Family, Career

and Community Leaders of America. It is

the Career and Technical Student

Organization for Family and Consumer

Science students. FCCLA is a national

student organization that helps young men

and women become better leaders in their families, careers and communities. Students learn skills for life: planning, goal

setting, problem solving, decision making and interpersonal communication. FCCLA is the only student organization with

the family as its focus. Members have the opportunity to demonstrate leadership skills through participating in proficiency

events, showcasing community service projects, exploring careers, attending educational sessions and electing officers. The

following FCCLA members recently competed this year at regionals and qualified for state competition in April:

March was a busy month for Tri-M with concerts, recitals, competitions and practice for the musical. Current and potential Tri-M members participated in the annual IHSA Solo/Ensemble contest which was held in Huntley on Saturday, March 7th. Current Tri-M members were required to participate in the festival and potential Tri-M members were strongly encouraged to perform as well. Participants also were able to perform their piece at the Solo/Ensemble Recital held in the Little Theatre on Monday, March 2nd.

Tri-M members also helped with admissions, ushering and selling concessions at the Band and Choir concerts held in late February and early March. We also inducted new members into the group in March. These members have been enrolled in a music class this year and have received successful evaluations from three teachers as well as their music teacher.

Many of our members are also involved in the spring musical “Shrek” opening this April. Tri-M has members involved in the cast as well as the pit orchestra. We are also looking forward to electing new officers and have started planning out activities for the 2015-2016 school year. Marzo fue un mes muy ocupado para Tri-M con conciertos, presentaciones, competencias y práctica para la obra musical. Actuales y posibles miembros Tri-M, participaron en el concurso anual de IHSA solista/conjunto el cual se llevó a cabo en Huntley el sábado, 7 de marzo. Los miembros actuales de Tri-M, se les requirió participar en el festival y a los posibles miembros de Tri-M se les recomendó fehacientemente participar de igual manera. Los participantes también pudieron presentar su pieza en la presentación como solista/conjunto, llevada a cabo en el Teatro Pequeño el lunes, 2 de marzo.

Los miembros Tri-M también ayudaron con las admisiones, guías y vendiendo en las concesiones en los conciertos de la banda y coro, llevados a cabo a finales de febrero y principios de marzo. También presentamos a los miembros nuevos en el grupo en marzo. Estos miembros han estado inscritos en la clase de música de este año y han recibido exitosas evaluaciones de tres maestros, como también de su maestro de música.

Muchos de nuestros miembros también participaron en la obra musical de primavera “Shrek”, empezando este abril. Miembros de Tri-M son parte del elenco como también en el foso de la orquesta. También esperamos la elección de oficiales nuevos y hemos

empezado a planear actividades para el año escolar 2015-2016

The Bilingual Honor Society extended a helping to Sunnymere Retirement Home. Eight students and one sponsor walked to the retirement home on March 2nd to feed the birds and the squirrels. The elderly at the retirement center, because their frail condition, couldn’t feed the birds themselves; however, they took joy watching from the windows filling 8 large birdfeeders. The total trip lasted less than an hour and the enjoyment and the smiles of elderly friends will last until the seeds are eaten by the squirrels.

The next adventure for BHS was a viewing of McFarland on March 7, 2015. McFarland is a movie about Mexican-American families and their struggles as migrant workers who are athletes (track runners) at their high school.

Bilingual Honor Society continued from page 28… La Sociedad de honor bilingüe extendió su ayuda a la casa-acilo de jubilación Sunnymere. Ocho estudiantes y un patrocinador caminaron a la casa-acilo el 2 de marzo para alimentar a los pájaros y ardillas. Los residentes del acilo, debido a su delicada condición no pudieron alimentar a los pájaros, sin embargo se alegraron observando por las ventanas como se llenaban 8 comederos grandes de pájaros. El viaje duró menos de una hora, la alegría y las sonrisas de los residentes durarán hasta que las ardillas se coman las semillas.

La siguiente aventura de la Sociedad de honor bilingüe fue ver McFarland el 7 de marzo de 2015. McFarland es una película sobre familias mexicoamericanas y su lucha como trabajadores inmigrantes y atletas (corredores de pista) en su secundaria.

The sophomore class has been hard at work on community service this year! Last semester, students worked in the Tomcat Food Pantry here at East Aurora collecting and sorting the many generous donations from students, staff members, and community members.

This semester, students have been working at our very own Cat’s Closet sorting, organizing, and collecting clothing donations. The Cat’s Closet is located in 092, and students who are in need of clothing items can come in to select what they need.

Sophomore class meets every Friday in room 264 from 3:15-4:15 pm. All sophomore class students are welcome! ¡Este año la clase sophomore ha trabajado arduamente en el servicio comunitario! El pasado semestre, los estudiantes trabajaron en la despensa de alimentos Tomcat aquí en el Este de Aurora, recaudando y clasificando las generosas donaciones de los estudiantes, miembros del personal y de la comunidad.

The Class of 2015 is set to break the all-time record for total Tomcat graduates! In graduate news, this year’s Prom’s theme is “Arabian Nights” and will be held on Friday, May 15th, at the Cotillion in Palatine, Illinois. Tickets will be on sale for $65 each from April 27th through May 8th. Any student wishing to take a non-EAHS student to

Prom must pick up a guest pass from the dean’s office, and return it completed no later than Monday, April 27 th. Upcoming May events also include: Senior Honors night on Wednesday May 20th, Graduation practice at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 21st, and the Senior Send-Off Party immediately afterwards, and then graduation on Friday, May

In other news, student council has hosted 3 successful blood drives for Heartland Blood Centers.

Our Tomcats provide over 15% of the blood used in the Aurora hospitals! Thanks to the generous

and caring donors, many lives have been saved!

The East Aurora Key Club is doing great things this year! Members were in charge of a room at the 2014 Brady Gift Mart; they spent the day setting up, running, and supervising activities for children, so that the children’s parent and guardians could shop for Christmas gifts. In February, Key Club Members attended Feed My Starving Children, and helped package meals to ensure that 61 children could be fed for a year! They will return to FMSC over Spring Break, along with members of Aurora Kiwanis, to package more meals. Upcoming plans included volunteering at the March 21st Kiwanis of Aurora Annual Pancake Breakfast, as well as raising money to help fund the building of a well for a community in need of fresh water, a goal that they reached last year. Interested in becoming a part of something great, and bettering your community? Come to a meeting, and see what it is all about! East Aurora Key Club meets on the first and third Fridays of the month, at 7:20 a.m., in room 369.
