On the other days, we are encouraging and expecting children to play co-operatively with creative play or use gear from the sports shed or other gear on site. such as tyres, sandpit, water trough, etc . We have purchased more equipment such as croquet, swing ball and quoits and have staff members taking activities and supporting in the playground where needs be.

This week we attached our many painted plastic hens onto our hen cage. They were originally staked in the ground, but the wire didn’t last in the weather. These were made in memory of Mrs Greenwood, our past Cleaner/Caretaker of 17 years, who was a hen breeder. They are great and colourful and brighten this area.

Many children set up the woodwork gear in the container. Our first project is underway. Interested children (in groups of three) are measuring, sawing and nailing signs that will go with our fruit trees and berry bushes.

Thanks to Alissa Cleaver who has donated a few more tools AND spent time after school attaching the tools to the wall. Check out the well -ordered tool wall!

Many thanks for everyone’s support of the PTA Cake Auction at our recent Pets Day. Our families certainly rose to the Solar system-themed cake decorating challenge. $2800 was raised, which will benefit our students in many ways.

Things to discuss at home with your whānau

This calendar acts as a prompt, and gives your family the opportunity to discuss some of the many aspects of Science. Be amazed by how much you and your children already know! Larger copies available in the office foyer. More to come next month …

Tēnā koutou katoa Another great Pets Day has been and gone. A real mixture of activities to appeal to all – art and floral activities, collections and hobbies, pet time, bike scooter time, group technology challenge, tasty bbq, parade and cake auction! It was

lovely to share our day with the community and our special patrons. Thanks to everyone who helped make it a success.

We had a fun disco party on Friday night, led by Greer and Madi. It was lovely to see so many

children dressed up - and some creative and clever dancing!

We look forward to seeing you at the Whānau Night next Tuesday evening - our last casual evening for 2019! Thanks to Darryl, Glen and Glynn for undertaking swimming pool

maintenance jobs. We’re hoping that the pool will be open (if it passes the water quality testing) for next Tuesday’s event.

Classes and year levels are currently being finalised by the Board for 2020. We will let you know as soon as these are confirmed. The Principal

Release Teacher for Mataī next year will be Mrs Jacqui Adams. Ngā mihi Carey-Anne Hamilton Tumuaki - Principal

Musings from Mataī… It has been good to get back into our programmes this week following camp and Pets

Day.

We have had a swap around in the classroom with our mat space in the opposite corner. This has created more space and allows the TV to be used well on the mat too. Mataī learners are settling into new table groups. With it being the last term for the Year 6s, they have their own groups to enjoy working together before moving to their next school.

Piwakawaka and Tui reading groups are working on chapter books in guided reading. Please encourage them to read a book of their choice from home or the library to continue filling in their Read Its. Pizza wheels are being awarded to daily readers!

We have been working on the facial expression, non-verbal elements of drama this week. This links in really well with reading inference, and characterisation skills too, also our energy/emotional rollercoaster work we are doing this week.

A number of Sausage Sizzle and Raffle IOUs are still outstanding - a list on the Office door gives the details. Please ensure the IOUs are paid promptly, so that our students can fully benefit from the fundraising. Thank you!

What a fabulous day we had for Pets Day. The school looked stunning with all the displays. It was great to catch up with some of you, and the children all had a blast. Thank you for your efforts as it's always a bit manic getting everything organised. Maths: Some of you will have received an invoice for a new AWS maths book. This is because your child has finished or near finishing their first book. I would like these books to stay at school so they become early finisher activities when they have finished what I have given them. If you want maintenance at home, I would suggest that you use Mathletics. All children have their log-ins and passwords in the front of their Read-its. If you don’t know what their log-in is, can you please contact me and I will let you know. Mathletics is a fantastic tool and I set tasks appropriate to their level to relate with what we are doing in class. A lot of children are not utilising this and it provides great maintenance. It is web-based so it is on a device but they only need to do a few minutes a day. We have a Mathlete of the Week who is the person who obtains the most points for that week in Year 1. Children can earn certificates for their efforts as well. At the end of the year there is also an award for the person who has obtained the most points over the year for each year level. Check out www.mathletics.com and sign in under your child to see what is there. Fitness and Athletics: There is a lot of athletics and fitness happening at the moment to prepare for our upcoming events. Can you please make sure your child wears suitable footwear for running in every day, and especially Thursdays, as we have Jayde coming in to help the whole school with Athletics. Sunshine Classics: You will have noticed that your child may have brought home a little square book to read; these are Sunshine Classics books. There is an online programme that I have introduced at school that supports reading these books. Again students have a password and username to get in; these are very easy. It is a great programme as it looks at sequencing, letters, sounds and can read the books to them as well. I will write the student username in the front of their Read-its for to access at home if you wish. Any questions please get in touch and email me. [email protected] or phone the school and I can get back to you.

Medication to be taken during school hours: A copy of the school

policy, and the medication authority form itself, have been attached to the electronic copy of this newsletter; these are also available from the school Office. This gives guidance on the school’s authority to administer student medication at school, even on a one-off basis. Medication should be in its original prescription packaging, with your child’s name, dosage and medication name clearly visible, and delivered by whānau to the school office, along with the completed form. Medication in blister packaging should remain in that packaging. Thank you for helping to keep all students safe at school.

Prize-giving Awards 2018 cups return: If your child was awarded a cup

last year, please return it to the school office now, so that we can arrange this year’s engraving. Many thanks.

Head lice: They’re on the move again, we’re sorry to say. Please check your

child/ren’s hair regularly, and treat as appropriate. Thank you.

Swimming pool keys for 2019/20 summer: We will send home

“intention to purchase a key” forms shortly; whānau will be required to complete a number of pre-arranged pool testing sessions over the summer, to qualify for reduced price pool access.

Lost from Mataī camp: Black beanie belonging to Henry L. Please return to

school if found.

Aged Compost available: a Mataī student fundraiser initiative for camp 2020.

Bags of glorious aged compost are available (aged horse manure mixed with untreated sawdust - about 90% manure, 10 % sawdust). It has been composting for 2 years! 25kg bag for $15 each. Contact Carey-Anne or Deb in the office.

Reading Together evening: for all Tūrepo children and their parent, on 7

November; details about this evening have been sent home.

Athletics sports: The Years 4 - 6 competition is to be held at DHS grounds on

Wed 6 November (for Hororata, Windwhistle, Kirwee and Greendale Schools). This day is organised by Greendale School. Information came home last week, please ensure the slip is returned by Tuesday. The Years 0 - 3 Run Jump Throw day is to be held at the Darfield Domain on Thursday 21 November. This day is organised by Jayde. All Malvern schools have been invited.

The Year 3 sleepover was most successful, and all of the children enjoyed it, even though the weather didn't really play its part. We couldn't utilise the playground, so solved that problem by spending more time in the pool! A huge thank you to the mums who transported us all, and to the mums who stayed on and helped us out. A thank you also to the mums who braved the weather to collect those who found sleeping at school a little too much! Pets Day rolled swiftly around soon after that; a day filled with excitement, fun and pride at sharing their prized animals with their friends. The classroom programme is humming along with the decodable texts leading the spelling patterns we are all learning. It is encouraging to see how many pizza wheels are being earned, with the children reading each night and having their Reading Logs signed. In Maths we started the term looking at patterns in nature - repeating patterns in plants and on the covering (feathers, fur, skin, etc) of animals. We used this focus also as part of our Make and Do focus. We will now be moving back to basic facts work. Writing time has been focused on writing letters, and we are now looking back at recounts in order to have the work moderated in time for school reports. The children are (mostly) remembering to wear their hats each day, as Term 4 is one of our two Hats terms. Sunscreen 50+ is available in the classroom for the children to apply as needed.
