LETTER FROM OUR PREFECT

November 2017

Dear Sodalists,

Mercy is love that feels compassion and reaches out to help. Divine mercy is our loving God feeling compassion for and helping the people He created to

love for eternity. How beautiful that sounds and how wonderfully easy it should be to accept mercy from God. However, throughout history we have and continue to refuse God’s gift.

In his encyclical “Dives in Misericordia” (Rich in Mercy), St. John Paul writes

about Israel’s special experience of the mercy of God. The Old Testament tells us about the many times that the Chosen People ignored the prophets and holy people and broke their covenant with God. In Exodus those He freed

from 400 years of slavery in Egypt turned from God to worship a Golden Calf. John Paul reminded us that the Lord Himself triumphed over this act of breaking the covenant when He solemnly declared to Moses that He was a

“God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness (Exodus 34:6)

Some of the Jewish people remained steadfast in their faith, but many sinned. Mary, the Immaculate Conception, was born as a prelude to the

Greatest Story ever Told, when God became man. When the time for his act of mercy came, Gabriel told the young virgin that she would bear a child and He would be called “The Son of the Most High God.” Mary did not question this

amazing news, but in complete trust in God said, “I am the Lord’s servant, may it happen to me as you have said.”

Soon after her yes to God, Mary visited her pregnant cousin Elizabeth who needed her help. Elizabeth greeted Mary, “How happy you are to believe that

the Lord’s message will come true.” In her song of praise (The Magnificat), Mary responds “His name is mercy to those who honor Him.” Just as Mary brought Jesus to Elizabeth (and John, who leapt in Elizabeth’s womb), she

wants to bring Jesus’ Divine Mercy to us. In 33 Days to Morning Glory Father Michael Gaitley says that Mary often can win hearts before Jesus can. Some

straying souls may feel more comfortable with a mother to guide them. Let’s pray: Come Holy Spirit, fire of mercy. Bring me, through Mary, to the Foun-tain of Mercy.

In coming letters, I’ll write about some saints who through Mary’s interces-sion were guided to Divine Mercy.

To Jesus through Mary,

Lynn Hill

St. Joseph House Christmas Giving Tree 2017

With the approach of the Holiday Season, we will again support St. Joseph’s House

with our Christmas Giving Tree gifts.

Since 1983, St. Joseph’s House has provided daycare and respite care for young peo-ple with severe and multiple disabilities. St. Joseph’s House has identified 13 of its

clients, who are in need of our assistance. In the past, we have provided gift cards as the best way to provide for these individuals with various disabilities. This year we will expand our gift options by giving gift suggestions targeted to each person’s specif-

ic needs. Our goal is to provide two gifts per person for a total of 26 gifts.

There will be two signup options. The preferred option will be online using SignUp Ge-

nius. An email with instructions and the SignUp Genius link will be sent out shortly. For those of you unable to use SignUp Genius, there will be the usual signup sheet at

the November Sodality meeting.

These gifts will be collected at the December Sodality meeting. Those Sodalists unable to attend the December meeting may leave their gifts with Carmen Boston at the Par-ish Office. For those of you unable to contribute a specific gift, St. Joseph’s House al-

ways appreciates gift cards to buy needed items, especially groceries.

St. Joseph’s House appreciates your continued support, and all that you do! For more

information or answers to any questions, please contact Annmarie Edwards at am-
