    Last weekend I was joined by adozen Wheelmen members foran outstanding couple of daysof challenging riding, excellentfood and even better company.This was a co-ride with theQuad City Bike Club out of MtHoreb, Wl. In addition to 13people from our club. therewere about 10 additional ridersfrom the QCBC. Most of usdrove up Friday for a little preride socializing. It was aboutthen that I discovered my hel-met and shoes were sitting ona kitchen chair at home. A fran-tic call to Jeff Biedka confirmedthat he was planning on dn.vingup Saturday moming. Jeffdrove over to my house Fridaynight and picked up my gear.Thanks again Jeff, I owe youOne.

    Saturday was in the mid 30'sand overcast when we set outfrom the hotel and rode over tothe starting point. Our ridehosts Dean and Deb Mathiasfrom QCBC were ready for uswith cue sheets, marked mapsand a variety of fruits and en-ergy bars. After windingthrough the city of Mt Horeb wedescended about a mile or sointo a valley. Man it was coldgoing down that first hill. It was-n't long before we startedclimbing out of the valley to ourfirst rest stop just outside ofBlue Mound State Park. Forthose of you who have notbeen there, this is the highestpoint in SW Wisconsin. Westarted climbing immediatelyafter the rest stop and didn'tstop until we reached the top Ofthe park. The road up averagedabout 120/o gracle and 18%toward the top, where a 5 storylookout tower beckoned usclimb some more on foot. The

    reward was a fantastic view ofseveral miles Of wooded coun-tryside just starting to turn fallcolors. The next leg startedwith a 3 mile decent and ofcourse more challenging hills.Everyone regroiiped for lunchat the 33 mile mark. The returntop home was no less challeng-ing for those who chose thehilly route. There were flatterroutes that `offered about thesame mileage. We arrived backat the motel about mid-afternoon. Tired, hungry,sweaty and grinning from ear toear. Total mileage 60...totalelevation gain 4,800fl. Saturdaynight we met at The Ugly Troll"for a pint of local micro brewbefore a tasty and filling pastabuffet sot up at a local restaii-rant by Dean and Deb. By 9:00it was lights out for most of us.

    Sunday was another overcaststart with temps in the mid 30's.We left at 8:00 to get back tothe hotel by 1:00 for showers.The 9 Wheelmen stayed to-gether for the entire ride of 43miles. I know the mileage does-n't sound like a lot but the longclimbs more than make up forthe short distance. Everyoneclimbed at his/her own paceand we regrouped at the top Ofeach hill. I would guess wegained about 3.000ft on Sun-day. We stopped in New Glau-ris for breakfast before headingback to Mt Horeb for showersand lunch at a local pub. Thelast stop was a tour of the"Mustard Museum.. You would

    not believe how many differentkinds of mustard there are.What a great aclventure.

    which runs through the "BibleBelt.. Must be confusing.

    On September llth,Pat Gill had a verygcod excuse for nothelping at the Harmon.She was up in Madison

    competing in her first lronmanTriathlon. This amazing womancompleted a 2.4 mile swim, 112mile bike and a 26.2 mile run in90+ degree heat and humidity aswell as brutal winds. Our hel-mets are off to her for accom-plishing something very few peo-ple even attempt. She's a truelronwoman!!!

    Please Your KneesCyclists are fond of kidding runners,"You'll be one of us some day!" That's

    because weight-bean.ng sports likerunning are tough on knees while bikeriding is much kinder. A common kneeinjury among runners is chondromala-cia,the degeneration of cartilage under thekneecap. If you're a sufferer,cycling can actually help stabilize andstrengthen your knees as long as youobey two rules. First, adjust the saddleso there is minimal knee bend atthe bottom of the pedal stroke (and,therefore, lessJ}end at the top).Second, avoid lengthy, seated climbsand grinding in big gears. Spin smaller

    gears so resistance stays light-to-moderate. Stand more on hills,particulariy on those that are long andsteady.

    Two Times to Ride(1 ) The day before an event. (2) Theday after an event. Instead of takingthose days off to rest up, you'll find thateasy spins, perhaps with two or

    three brief jams to get your heart go-ing, are more effective for preparationand recovery. Take your rest dayst\ro days before the event and thesecondday after. A short ride the day beforewill restore your rhythm withoutsapping energy. It also lets you checkyour equipment one final time. Ridingthe day after, even though you mayfeel stiff and sore, will loosen yourmuscles and joints. Lying on thecouch wont

    Ffust lnhibitorlf you ride a steel frame, you knowtthat nJst is always on the attack. Anyneglected chip or scratch will give thenasty stuff an open door when rainor sweat are present. You need tokeep your frame clean, waxed andtouchedup to maximize its life. With this inmind, thereis an often overlookedplace where moisture can accumulateand rust can break out: the tubejunctions where a frame pump fits.Sweat, especially, has a way Of get-tinointo these areas. So after each ridewhen you wipe down the frame, re-n-your pump. DIY off each end, set it

    aaside, and then work your rag into thetube junctions. Leave the pump off tilltthe ne)ct ride so the frame canccontinue to dry, but be sure to put itwhere you wont forget it, likeslandingagainstthefrontwheel.

    Nix the cfroNuisance noises coming from a bikearenl always easy to solve. Whentheyseem to be from the front wheel, hereare t\^ro solutions to try. First, put adrop Of oH on each spoke crossing.use a rag to catch any excess. Theslight flex in a wheel as it rolls canmake dry spokes click where theyccontact each other. You're more likelyto hear this when climbing oraccelerating out Of the saddle. If lubedoes" produce the sound ofsilence. remove the hub's quick-release and apply grease to theskewer andthreads. A dry skevver can click as itmoves ever so slightly while the bikerolls. Be careful not to get excessgrease between the QR and the forktsdropouts or the wheel could slir].

    The League of Illinois Bicyclists (LIB) seeks an enthusiastic individual to head ourgrowing bicycle safety education program from his or her home office. LIB is anAurora-based non-profit advocacy organization promoting bieycle access, education,and safety in Illinois.

    Major tasks:• Coordinate opportunities to teach bicycling skills to adults and children in Illinois. Publicize and

    distribute bicycle safety information to local organizations, schools, bike shops, bike clubs, and others.• Become familiar with selling points, delivery models, and materials for "Safe Routes to School"

    programs. Publicize these and be a resource to Illinois teachers, parents, and school administrators.• Assist with LIB's Driver Education "Share the Road" video production project.• Identify and pursue relevant grants and partnerships from foundations and government sources, tosupport ongoing activities and new initiatives.• Assist in LIB's other programs, initiatives, and events, as appropriate.

    Wheelmen Continue to GiveBack to the Community

    Over the years, the Wheeling Wheel-men as a club, as well as individualmembers, find good causes to donatetime and money to. Most recently twocauses were identified. First the Hurri-cane Kathna Relief Organization andsecond the Working Bikes Coopera-tive.You can't turn on the TV or read anewspaper without hearing about theneeds of the thousands of survivors ofhurricane Katrina. Many of our mem-bers on their own have donated moneyand supplies to help the victims. So asa club we sent Harmon t-shirts. Everylittle bit counts.

    The second cause to be identified wasWorking Bikes Cooperative(www.workingbikes.org). This not-for-profit group recovers landfill-bound bicycles, repairs them to work-ing condition, and sells them to Chica-goaus at a low cost in order to fundshipments of bicycles and bike parts todeveloping counties. Working BikesCooperative is an almost entirely vol-

    unteer organization; they cun.entlyemploy six part-time mechanics toensure that the bikes are plentiful andin full working order.

    Our club donated a quantity ofHamon water bottles to be sent alongwith the bikes. We hope these deserv-ing people will be styling on theirnew bikes and fashionable water bet-tles. As we all know, hydration is thekey.

    A§ we look outside the club for goodcauses, I'd like to remind every mem-ber that the Wheeling Wheelmen cannot exist without member participa-tion. Simply paying your membershipdues won't keep the club going. Theclub is its members and the membersare the club. It is volunteering to hosta ride, working the St. Pat's andHamon, helping at the amual BikeRodeo, attending club meetings andmore. It is a lot of work to keep theclub going.

    So don't ask what the WheelingWheelmen can do for you...ask whatyou can do for the Wheeling Wheel-men.
