Ol’ No1’s Memorial Service at Mildura AGM Ulyssians stood in whatever shade they could find on a hot Mildura day, to Celebrate Stephen Dearnley’s Life, and listen to the many stories from those who knew him the most. His daughter Alexa Brown, our National President Dennis and Past Presidents Rick, Kim & Tom, with New Zealnd’s President Peter McIntosh and many others. Here is Stephen’s last message he prepared before the Mildura AGM A Message for Mildura Almost everyday I hear about a member somewhere in Oz giving a helping hand to someone who had been having a bad trot. Perhaps it was the simple act of picking up a stranger’s bike after a nasty drop and helping the owner on his way; perhaps it was to give much-needed support to a member painfully recovering after a long bout of Chemotherapy. Whatever form it took, this was an example of Ulysses in action. It is this same spirit of Ulysses in action that supports me now as friends call or visit in these twilight years. Because this spirit can overcome petty squabbles and differences and bring members ever closer together wherever they may be, I hope that Ulysses in action may continue as my legacy long after I have ridden on. This month’s report contains both sides of the coin in that there have been some positives and
some negatives during the month. On one hand I genuinely feel we are on the track to getting our “Social”
club back. I hear positive comments from people I speak to about the topics we've already made
decisions on like finally having a majority consensus on keeping the Big Fish as our clubhouse. On the
other hand at this months' members meeting we discussed various concerns to do with where our Xmas
party should be held but sadly could not come to any meaningful outcome due to a lack of participation in
the discussion by the members present.
I continue to try to get members engaged in the topics we discuss but sometimes it seems all efforts
fall on deaf ears. It seems we all need a reminder from time to time of the reality of what it means to have
ownership of or in something, such as, feeding a dog, owning a car, or membership in a club or
association. Branch membership bears the responsibility of participation. This is your branch so you need
to support your committee who are there to support you, but if you don't get involved in the workings, the
“democracy” of the decisions made on your behalf you will end up being consigned to complaining about
a decision forced on you by the committee whom it is also forced on to make. In this case, to ensure a
suitable date and venue can be secured for our Xmas party at the end of the year. I don't believe this is an
outcome any of us want but it will be one we will all end up with if you are not willing to put your views
forward and participate in the democratic process. I continue to encourage all members to speak out
about the issues they feel we need to debate/discuss as a group for the betterment of our branch. Please
approach me or any of the committee when you see us to raise any concerns you may have.
Another topic for one of our soon to come members meetings will be to do with who pays to attend
our Xmas party and who doesn't, and why. I foresee there will be more members willing to participate in
that discussion but it cannot be included on the agenda until a date and venue is decided on.
To all of our members who made the trek to the National AGM, I trust they had a good time and
suffered no ill will such as was experienced last year and they all travelled to and fro without major
incident.
I look forward to seeing you all at our next social and members meeting nights and don't forget to
stay upright out there.
Disgracefully yours, Terry (Dartss) Sheppard
MissBehavin’s Welfare Report Ron Reeves came off his bike last week, he is well but did hurt his leg during the fall.
Kat, Chris Eichmann was rushed to Hospital last Wednesday night nothing to
serious, she is doing fine but was undergoing more tests.
Doc & Eko Colin & Lesley Robinson – My last email from Eko was that Doc
had gone into renal failure and was devastated. He was still undergoing tests.
Eko was to have surgery on her eye, so hopefully she will gain more sight back.
Brian Grieg –Hatchet -while at AGM he was admitted into Mildura hospital for 3 days with his
recurring problem. He had a turn which immobilised his left side. It is like a stroke but according to doctors it
isn't. Now that he is back home he is to see doctors for tests for Multiple Sclerious.
Dick Hingley -Groper was in hospital at Echuca. The morning the group of 10 members were
packing to head for Mildura, Groper was sick, dizzy and losing his balance. An ambulance was called and
after 3 days in hospital the doctors decided he had a virus which was affecting his balance etc. He recovered
and was able to travel to the AGM by car from Echuca.
I hope everyone is doing well, remember if you know of anyone that has been ill that I do not know
about please email or call, so I can keep everyone posted.
Disgracefully yours MissBehavin - Christine Sheppard # 53774

Plans are going along great for a memorable night. This month the plan is to notify as many
old Glasshouse Mtns. members as possible. Emails are being sent out to all addresses that I can
lay my hands on. Which is where our present members could help
Please…. If you know of members, past 7 present, who, for whatever reason have not been
attending on our social nights or rides and you are able to get their email address or phone
number give me the information as we would not like any Glasshouse past or present to be un-
aware of our Celebrations.
Date 27th October 2012 6pm at Centenary Lakes Bowls Club Caboolture
Dinner is all ready planned (If you plan to attend and have a special needs in your diet,
please let us know and we can order for you.) Cost has not been worked out yet.
A Raffle is planned in June and with everybody’s help we can hopefully raise funds to keep
the evening cost to a minimum

Boreen Point Ride – Sunday 25th March 2012
Hi All I have been on a few rides now and enjoy reading the write up of the rides in the newsletters.
It now looks like my turn has come, being nominated by I don’t know who. Waking up at some ungodly hour hearing the rain pounding on the roof, I thought ‘Bloody Hell’. Luckily it did ease off to showers. So on being dragged out of the bed I was told “we have to turn up rain, hail or shine”, and thinking to myself ‘shine would be much better’. So up and at ‘em, breakfast and then dressing in the wet weather gear and heading off to the BP North.
The further south we went the dryer it got, Yippee!!! Departing 8.30am with Diesel (Cliffy) leading the ride, we had 12 Bikes & 20 people heading off to Boreen Point with the weather looking a little bit dicey. Firstly we headed to Woodford, then up to Maleny, through to Montville, then Mapleton, stopping at the ‘Coffee View Café’ for smoko and coffee break. Then onto Nambour, Yandina through to Eumundi then onto Tewantin, then eventually arriving at the ‘Apollonian Hotel’ in Boreen Point at about 11.30am, meeting up with Drums & Shamrock who were minding a table for us all. Great Food, Great Company, live music in the background, what more could you ask for. Although the local native wildlife are a bit rude, swooping down and taking Drum’s meat right off his plate when he wasn’t watching, after that everyone was guarding their food from the kookaburras, more live entertainment!
We departed Boreen Point when we were told (not sure of the time). Stopping at Nambour about 3pm and saying our goodbyes. The weather was very kind to us, the sun poked through a couple of times but no rain. Considering the amount of rain there has been up the coast, the roads are in pretty good condition plus the lovely scenery along the way. What more could you ask for. We didn’t get lost or lose anyone along the way. I, for the first time, had a go at taking photos from the bike but I had a bit of trouble and kept pressing the wrong buttons, (think I’ve heard that excuse before somewhere)
need more practice
Very enjoyable day!! Looking forward to the next ride.

Fredrick’s visit to Jack Bottomley last month
to present Jack his 10 year Badge
Early in March Delia “Lady Butterfly” & Fredrick Batten “butterfly” along with Jack’s friend Kenn
Stevens who knew Pat (Jack’s Wife) &
Jack many years ago, visited Jack at
RSL Centaur Hostel, Caloundra.
When we approached the visitors
lounge, there were the tops of two grey
haired heads just showing over a
snugly two seater lounge..Sure enough
it was Jack sitting next to his girl
friend a fellow Centaur resident, Gloria
Nunn. They make a sweet couple,
holding hands and reviewing their
separate lives, adding importance and
meaning to every day.
On behalf of our Ulysses Club,
the Glasshouse Mountains branch, I
presented Jack with his ten year
membership badge. Over many recent
visits I’ve noticed Jack’s memory to be
constantly good, with some details lost
in the passing of years. With good care his memory is very much improved over a few years back, when
after an operation on his eye and later a fall in his Centaur hostel room, Jack’s memory failed him and his
health was generally “not good”
We gave both Jack & Gloria framed photographs from various visits to help keep the memories alive.
Jack’s greatest regrets now are not being able to ride his motorcycle or visit Ulysses Glasshouse
Mountains branch and talking with friends as he so much enjoyed doing. We talked about his motorcycle
racing days in Victoria and Jack’s last
motorcycle orientated outing to his friend
Fran Redding’s service in August. Gloria
said she has always been a bit scared of
motorcycles and had never ridden on a
motorbike, but would do so if Jack was
the rider.
Both Gloria & Jack said that they
would like more visits, so if passing
nearby or looking for a ride destination
consider Caloundra, nice beaches, great
food outlets and home to one of our
aging members who still lives our motto,
“Growing Old Disgracefully”
Fredrick Batten, “butterfly” # 40084
For his birthday, little Joseph asked for a 10-speed bicycle. His father said 'Son we'd give you one but the mortgage on this house is $280,000 and your mother just lost her job. There's no way we can afford it.' The next day the father saw little Joseph heading out the front door with a suitcase. So he asked 'Son where are you going?' Little Joseph told him; 'I was walking past your room last night and heard you telling mum you were pulling out. Then I heard her tell you to wait because she was coming too…. And I'll be damned if I'm staying here by myself with a $280,000 mortgage and no bloody bike!

MILDURA AGM March 2012 by Averil Hope everyone who travelled to Mildra AGM enjoyed the week. I would have to place Mildura up with
most other AGMs since I have been a member, like Mt. Gambier, Mudgee, Ulverstone, Coffs Harbour &
Nuriootpa. This years event was well organized, the locals welcomed us with open arms. I found they were
not out to make dollars out of us, everywhere we went for meals & entertainment out of the grounds there
was a place to suit our budget.
Groper & I left Burpengary on Friday 16th to head for Echuca where friends and fellow Ulyssians lived.
We headed out to Inglewood then turned off to Warialda via Texas & Yetman. The roads out that way
weren’t the best, in fact probably the worst of the whole trip.
Day 2 we headed for Dubbo where we received the latest news on the floods down there and had to
change our plans.
Day 3 Instead of Hay, we headed off to Albury via Canowindra and Cootamundra. 4kms out of Young
on hearing a thud and Groper trying hard to control the bike & trailer, we ended up down a 5ft embankment
on the opposite side of the road, right beside a large tree and we were thrown to the ground. Luckily after all
the rain down that way it was a reasonable soft landing so we were able to get up and survey the situation.
The bike was on a lean propped up by the insta trike setup, but 2 bolts had snapped off which caused the
noise I heard and the setup dropping to the road at 100kph. Next step was to ring for a tilt tray to come out
to help get the bike into Young. Reply was ‘sorry you have to notify your Insurance before we can come out.’
-Who carries their insurance phone numbers with them?- With all the traffic going past both ways, only 1 ute
stopped, a local sheep farmer, Graham, who had already gone past but came back to check because he
thought that we had picked a funny place to have a picnic. Then a motorcycle pulled up, he was a Ulyssian
and out of all the 130+ branches in Australia one guess where he came from? Yep! Glasshouse Mtns. His
name is Skip, he mainly goes to the AGMs. What a place and time to renew friendships. Then the tilt tray
came and between the tilt driver, Bruce, Skip, Graham and Groper everything was loaded on board and off
we went into Young where Bruce helped book us into the local Caravan Park. Then took our bike & trailer to
his work shop just down the road.
Day 4 Groper went down to the work shop and after checking everything out and with help from the
mechanics, our bike was ready to go again. The time and effort that the workshop mechanics and Bruce
gave us to help us on our way was tremendous.
Day 5 we ended up at Echuca at John & Robyn’s place, but not without an incident, one of the
mudguards on the trainer wheels came loose so with a bit of ‘Groper Ingenuity’ it was fastened securely
enough and held on until Echuca where again Groper had to do some welding.
Days 6 & 7 were spent relaxing and catching up with Groper’s brother who had travelled up from
Melbourne to see us. Then other Glasshouse Ulyssians turned up. Dave & Kazz, Keith & Mary, Wizard &
Sandi and Brian & Julie. Day 8 Friday. John & Robyn took all of us out on a House boat (which John looks
after) for a cruise and lunch on the Murray. Most enjoyable.
Day 9 John & Robyn had a family wedding that afternoon so we were left to do our own thing.
On thinking back 3 years ago, when the National Committee announced Mildura as our 2012 AGM, we
had said ‘Party time at Echuca first.’ So with us camped on their doorstep, the wedding, they became
grandparents for the second time and John was finally retiring all in that week, they were looking forward to
some quiet days after the AGM.
Day 10 Sunday everyone was packing up to head to Echuca, that is all but Groper & myself. Groper
decided to have an extended stay in Echuca at the local hospital for 3 days. He had a virus which didn’t want
to let go. Wednesday we finally packed and hooked the trailer onto John’s car and got to Mildura where we
set up camp with 1700 other Ulyssians. A great AGM. The layout of the grounds were well set out plenty of
eating stands. Plenty of Trade stalls compared to some other AGMs. Thursday was Ol No1’s Memorial
Service. Saturday was the parade in which we didn’t go. Gee! the first one we have missed. But we had
breakfast in town and walked to the park in time to see over 2300 bikes enter which took over an hour to
finish. Saturday afternoon was the Annual General Meeting a reasonably short one this year. No voting

because the Committee are doing a great job, nobody else wanted to nominate. Sunday morning, even before daylight, tents were being pulled down and a mass exit from the grounds
started. We had to go back to Echuca, where, next morning we said our goodbyes with hugs & kisses and
left on the bike via West Wyalong, Goondiwindi, Toowoomba, Esk and home arriving Wednesday lunchtime..
Keith had taken the trailer home from Mildura for us. Thanks Keith. But not without further hassles with the
bike, both Shockies had collapsed probably started from the accident.
So, I for one, was more than pleased to get home. After resting up, I now look back and say it was
another great AGM. Next year 2013 Fraser Coast at Maryborough Show Grounds. We will be there.
