Science Talent Search Report The theme for 2018 Science Talent Search is: ‘Australian Game Changers and Change Makers’.This could refer to Individuals, Teams,

Technologies or Ideas. Registration opens on Monday February 26 and the closing date is Monday May 28. Topics for Creative Writing and Posters are on the website: www.sciencevictoria.com.au/sts.The Public Judging Day is Saturday August 4 and Exhibition and Presentation Day will be in October. All entry is by online registration. Instructions for online entry are on the STAV website www.sciencevictoria.com.au/sts/regInf.html.The 2018 Handbook is available in hardcopy from early February and will be sent to all individual members and school subscribers; there is also an online version on the STS section of the STAV website. Schools who entered the competition in 2017 will also receive a copy in the mail. Please read the handbook carefully even if you have entered the competition for many years. Each year changes are made to some competition rules or section guidelines and your students may be disadvantaged if you haven’t kept yourself up to date with changes. The partnership between Science Talent Search and BHP Billiton Foundation Science and Engineering Awards enable students who won major bursaries for Experimental Research or Inventions to enter their project into this prestigious Australian National competition will continue in 2018. Students who wish to enter the BHP Billiton Foundation Science and Engineering Awards will need to enter through STS. More information is on their website http://www.scienceawards.org.au. Teachers who have not entered their students in STS before and are looking for ideas to get started should contact Janice Teng at STAV. There is a PD resource available or it may be possible participate in a workshop that may be organised during the year.As always, the STS committee needs new members for 2018 to replace those who are retiring. There are 6 committee meetings each year, plus Judging day in August and Presentation day in October. If you would like to join us and contribute to the running of STS please contact Janice Teng at STAV: Phone 9385 3999; email: [email protected]

BRAIN BREAK MORNING TEAScience decorated biscuitsBrain Breaks can be a quiz, group activities or a few quick science demonstrations – anything you want them to be. It’s a chance to stop and reflect on the science in your world.

Think about what science themed food you could bring to the event – molecules made from lollies and toothpicks, cakes decorated with dinosaurs or biscuits in the shape of lab equipment.

In past years we’ve had more than 600 workplaces all around the country celebrate National Science Week in this way.

When you hold a Brain Break we’d love to hear from you or share a photo – get in touch on Twitter via #brainbreak and #scienceweek or on Facebook.

Registration to receive a pack is open untill 17 July, 2018.

STAVCON 2017 – “Our Future Earth” held at La Trobe University on 1st December 2017Over 370 people attended STAVCON 17 held at La Trobe University Bundoora Campus.

We held over 60 workshop sessions and had more than 55 display tables in the Exhibition area.

This was a fantastic result and the “vibe” was upbeat and positive.

We started the program with the first ever breakfast session which allowed extra time for delegates to network and visit the displayers.

After the STAV’s President’s welcome, the Keynote was delivered by Dr David Martin. This was a thought provoking address about what Innovation is all about and what’s needed to move forward.

We opted for shorter 45 minute workshop sessions and allowed 10 minutes to get between sessions given we had some new rooms.

Breakfast was kindly sponsored by Stile Education. Stile helped change the mood of the exhibition floor space by introducing for the first time a lounge area as their display which worked well.

Lunch was sponsored by Marvel with Disney arranging for Thor and his hammer to visit and mingle with the crowd. He proved to be a huge hit.

Outside the Union Hall, we had on display a “Driverless Bus”. We believe this is the first in Australia and helped to showcase the Conference theme of “Our Future Earth”.

We also welcomed ten first time exhibitors.

A number of competitions were conducted by the exhibitors and some fabulous prizes were on offer including the opportunity for a class to go the Marvel’s Avengers STATION which will open in March 2018. An iPad was given away by Education Perfect, a travel bag by GET Educational Tours and some Google home pods by WorldStride. These were drawn at the Meet and Mingle session after the Conference. It was great to see over 70 people attend this.

Thank you to everyone that made STAVCON 17 a memorable Conference.

We look forward to welcoming you to this years’ STAVCON.

Physics Workshop 2018Interactions: Making sense of Newton’s laws of motionNewton’s Laws of Motion epitomise the essence of physics: three simple statements that together account for all the mechanical interactions in our experiential world, and yield elegant mathematical predictions. Yet for many people they also represent everything that is most impenetrable and abstract in physics. In this workshop we will look for the meaning behind the archaic expressions of these laws, and explore their ramifications for understanding everyday experiences such as skateboard riding and trampoline jumps.• Are you a teacher of science in the middle-years (5-8) or lower secondary years

(7-10), wondering how to engage students in learning the basics of physics?• Do your students find it hard to see how physics ideas relate to their experiences

outside the classroom?• Do you wish your students were asking more questions about physics topics?• Do you feel your own physics background has not prepared you well for teaching

some physics topics?• Would you like to feel more confident about your own understanding of the

physics in your school’s science curriculum?

Then this one-day workshop is designed for you! What previous participants have said:• Christina was very thoughtful in what she chose to include in her presentation.• Great ideas and good presentation to help me understand concepts and how to help explain them to

students in a clear and easy manner. Thank you. • Well paced, informative. Enough time for interaction.• Excellent session, very helpful. Christina is highly knowledgeable, awesome. I will be more confident

and will enjoy teaching this topic.

This workshop will be offered Friday 16 March 2018Time: 9.30am – 4.00pm Venue: STAV House, 5 Munro Street, Coburg Presenter: Christina Hart To register go to: www.sciencevictoria.com.au/otherPD.html

NEWBOOK

Forceful ExperiencesColouring Newton’s Laws of Motion

By Christina Hart

This resource, for teachers and students of general science at the junior high school level, introduces Newton's Laws of motion at a qualitative level. 'Forceful Experiences' takes students' experiences of motion as a starting point, and guides them to construct a more powerful framework for understanding their everyday world. The approach also provides a secure foundation for those students who will go on to study physics at a more advanced, mathematical level. Features include: Short summaries of the main conceptual points are provided at the end of each chapter. There are frequent opportunities for students to 'Pause for thought' and engage with the ideas they have encountered. These can be set as homework activities and used for small group discussions. At strategic points students are challenged to demonstrate what they have learned. Teachers can use these tasks as a basis for formative and/or summative assessment. An accompanying web page provides supporting materials for teachers and students.
