The wait is finally over. I am delighted to say that we have a wonderful newsletter for you to enjoy. I would like to thank Lisa Foley for stepping up once again to make the newsletter possible. We desperately need someone to take over the position of newsletter editor, so if you have the skills necessary, please consider volunteering for the job. We would love to have newsletters more often, but in the meantime, we will continue to communicate club events through our email blasts, website, and Facebook page. The club certainly has been busy since the last newsletter was published. I hope that you were able to participate in the club activities. Some of the things that we have offered were: The Supported Entry at the Greenwich Kennel Club show in June; the Supported Entry at the Eastern Dog Club show in December; a variety of field training opportunities throughout the Spring and Summer; a terrific canine conditioning workshop; and our annual WC/WCX. Details, results and photos of these events will appear later in the newsletter. Jill Kuchinos and Margaret Uminsky (from the Mid-Atlantic FCR Club) have continued to work hard to ensure that the 2021 Specialty will be fantastic! Field events will begin on May 21st, followed by agility, conformation, and obedience in York, PA from the 23rd to the 28th. Our theme will be “Puttin’ on the Ritz”. Please consider volunteering to help out. We need lots of you to step up and help to make this event a success. Contact Jill, Margaret, or me if you are able to volunteer. Please save Saturday, March 14, 2020 and plan to attend our annual meeting at Tails U Win in Manchester, CT. In addition to our annual meeting, elections, Versatility and Junior Handler Awards, pot luck lunch and terrific raffle, Kathy Lesinski will teach everyone some techniques to keep your dogs in good physical condition. More details about the meeting will be sent as the date approaches. The conditioning workshop that Kathy presented last August was so well received, we thought it would be great to have even more club members benefit from her excellent advice. We have also scheduled a second, more advanced, workshop with Kathy on June 20th. There are many other club activities that we have been working on for you to enjoy in 2020. I hope that you will be able to join us for some of them. Please be sure to check the website, our Facebook page and eblasts to find out more as the plans become finalized. I hope that you all have a fabulous 2020!

Dear NEFCRC Club Members,

Believe it or not, it is now time to start thinking about our winter Supported Entry! We would

like you all to put on your thinking caps – this year, we are asking for help in coming up with a

list of who YOU would like to see judge sweepstakes at a future Supported Entry.

Do you know someone who you think would make an excellent choice? It may be a breeder…it

may be a person trying to become a judge…it may be a professional handler…it may be just

someone who LOVES and has knowledge of our breed…there are so many wonderful choices,

and we would like to hear about all of them!

Please fill out this nomination form and email it back (the address is at the bottom of this form).

Don’t know how to do that? No problem! You can snail mail it back if you prefer (the address is

also at the bottom of the page) or print it out and bring it to our club’s Winter Meeting on March

14th

at Tails-U-Win! If you can, please indicate the reason for your nomination (ie. John Doe -

has been breeding FCRs for 25 years). Thanks for all of your judge suggestions in advance!

All nominations will be collected and added to our master list to be considered for future

assignments.

Canine Conditioning Follow-Up Workshop

June 20, 2020

1pm – 3pm

Tails-U-Win

175 Adams St

Manchester, CT 06042

The NEFCRC is pleased to offer this Canine Conditioning Follow-Up Workshop with

instructor Kathy Lesinski. This fun class is extremely popular at Tails-U-Win and often

has a waiting list of people who want to participate, so we are grateful that Kathy had

another weekend to open a one-day follow-up workshop class just for us!

This workshop is intended for participants who either participated at our one-day

workshop last August or during our March meeting this year. During this workshop,

each dog will be evaluated by Kathy to come up with exercises designed specifically

with that dog in mind, whether they are a competing athlete or a champion couch

potato. Exercises will cover ways to build core strength, front or hind end strength,

and balance awareness. This workshop is designed to help your dog maintain healthy

weight, improve strength, endurance and balance, perform better with less occurrence

of injuries. It is psychologically healthy for the dog, reduces hyperactivity and

increases ability to focus, extends dog's performance career, reduces risk of

osteoarthritis in later years.

Participants are encouraged to bring a notebook and writing utensil to take notes and

SMALL (but many) treats to help lure their dogs into position on the equipment. It is

advised to not feed your dog a full meal the morning of the workshop as they will be

receiving LOTS of goodies throughout the day.

This workshop is limited to 10 participants, so get your registration in ASAP if you

want to guarantee a spot for you and your dog!

**Dogs must be at least one year old to participate.**

Healthy senior dogs may also join us!

Fees: $45 (NEFCRC/FCRSA members); $50 (non-members)

Registration Deadline: June 6, 2020

Winter 2019

NEFCRC Field Committee 2020

A youngster was once asked, "How do you enjoy your new bicycle?" The youngster responded:" There are two ways to enjoy a bicycle, you can either ride it, or take it apart." So, how do you enjoy your Flat-Coated Retriever? Fortunately, Flat-Coated Retrievers are versatile and can be enjoyed in many ways: showing your dog, working your dog, or both. As an owner of a Flat-Coat, you already know they that they were bred to be a retriever of waterfowl and upland game. Flat-Coats are highly intelligent, love to play, to please, and to pick-up things. With some training, they can be taught to reliably retrieve items for their handlers. The NEFCRC Field Committee's purpose is to offer the opportunities to our club members, of all experience levels who want to build upon the necessary foundation of their dog's basic obedience skills, a chance to learn more about the skills it takes to become an effective dog/handler team in the Field venue. This year we plan to offer all our members, regardless of your level of "field experience", who have a Flat-Coat with solid obedience skills ( sit, stay, and a reliable recall), a chance to participate in five training days with other more experienced members and their dogs who can share their expertise. We also are planning to sponsor Working Certificate and Working Certificate Excellent Tests at a venue to be determined in October, 2020. To encourage more involvement from our membership in field activities, we are soliciting your opinions as to what activities, preferences, wishes or needs you might have regarding field activities. In the past few years we have sponsored training days, and popular workshops with Pat Burns, and introduced our dogs to upland game hunting with Pat Perry. In addition, we have talked about trying to sponsor seminars with either Mitch White (breeder and trainer of Flat-Coated retrievers) or Carol Cassity, another popular retriever trainer. So, before we finalize any plans for 2020 in field activities, we would like your input. How can we make your participation or reluctance to become involved in field activities less scary? What have we missed in terms of what we have offered that might answer the needs that you may have? What can we change to encourage your involvement? We would like you to call Sally Young before February 10, 2020 and speak with her about your suggestions or questions. Her cell number is 1-(802)-324-3292 between 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. We hope that we will help more members and their FCRs to become involved with this aspect of our breed's activities.

Do you and your dog(s) qualify for one of our three awards? Attached are applications for the Versatility Award, Junior Showmanship - Performance

We hope to see you all there!

Revised 2019

Do You and Your Flat-Coat Qualify For An

NEFCRC Versatility Award?

Please read the qualifications, and if you are eligible to receive this award, send the following information to:

Sally Bridges

285 Forest Street

Methuen, MA 01844

Northeast Flat-Coated Retriever Club's Versatility Award

The Purpose: This award is to encourage NEFCRC members to train, work, and show their dogs in more than one area of interest. This

award will honor the dog who has proven his ability as a multi-purpose dog. At the same time, it will give the owner

incentive to pursue new areas of interest and stretch the dog's talents. Although the Flat-Coat is a breed that prides itself

as a multi-purpose dog, we are in danger of splitting into two groups (show vs. working lines). This award is one small

effort to try to keep the breed together, and foster exchanges in expertise among club members. Although most useful for

motivating new owners, this award will hopefully inspire more senior members to continue to work with their dogs in

multiple venues.

To Qualify: The Flat-Coat must have earned AKC titles in two separate areas, and the Owner must be a club member in good standing

during the time the dog has achieved the two required titles. For first-time qualification, the club will award a Versatility

Plaque – please see the list of titling areas below to make sure your dog has titles in two QUALIFYING AREAS.

Thereafter, the club will provide add-on plates as the dog continues to earn titles in any additional areas.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!!

AKC Title Areas That Qualify Towards An Initial Plaque:
