First BTCA Specialty for Eileen & ChesterThe trip to the specialty was amazing and a little overwhelming! I’m afraid I didn’t get as many photos as I would have liked but here is what I have. The curled up puppy is my Chester who took his first airplane ride and negotiated O’Hare like a seasoned traveler. He’s sound asleep waiting at the gate to board. Judith Rivers with her dog at ringside.

The group photo was taken on the way out of St. Charles as everyone headed home. The whole thing was a blur!

Chester and me watching the activities.

The group with the green tee shirts are Mark and Barbara Callahan and Tim Acker. They were Team Stormchaser (Stormy) who competed in Fast CAT.

Model BT 6mo, when only the best will do!

For those of you who, like myself, spend too many hrs at the computer accumulating stacks of papers which will later need to be fed into a shredder, I offer you the results of my personal online and in home shredder research.

For those of us who cling steadfastly to the grid, our choices are almost inexhaustible. We can choose our shredder for size, shape, color, power, or if we are uneducated in the intricacies of technology, we can simply buy what the salesman is pushing that week. Over the years, i have been talked into purchasing countless models. Some I returned to the store, exchanging them for ones which turned out to be pretty much the same. Others went straight into the garbage. A couple went into the garbage AFTER I took them apart and couldn't get them back together. And one shattered machine went into the garbage after I took a sledge hammer to it (by far the most satisfying solution to a frustrating problem). BTW, I did once try reading the instructions that came with the machine…….

I presently own a Fellows CRC34035 with a 6 inch feed slot. It measures 8”x7”x5”, and fits very neatly on the shelf next to my books …the reason for the purchase of this particular model (that, and of course, the violent death of its larger predecessor).

The Fellows CRC34035 most impressive feature is its sharp set of uppers and lowers that shreds paper into even little pieces… oh, and I think I mentioned that it does fits nicely on the shelf next to my computer books.Well, the Fellows CRC34035 also has some very annoying features:The 6 inch slot for example, requires that full size papers be folded to fit. It also shreds only one piece of folded paper at a time which has to be continuously fed in by hand. When overheated, this unit shuts itself down for a “while” (determined by the whim of the machine) leaving you waiting impatiently with a stack of folded paper. The diminutive storage container requires constant emptying into larger and larger containers, so when the job is done, what began as a few folders of papers sitting neatly on the shelf (next to the shredder) has now increased in volume to fill an oversized leaf bag which needs to be stored out in a shed awaiting recycling in the garden or worm compost bin. BUT…at $69.95 + tax and extended warranty it is indeed a bargain.

My latest shredder purchase, Model : BT6mo, is virtually unknown in the office supply world. In fact, it is little known outside a small circle of enthusiasts who often scour the globe looking for this little gem.

Like it’s mechanical counterpart, this bit of natural technology has a sharp set of upper and lower shredders, with the added bonus that the original set will automatically be replaced with a stronger and longer lasting set that comes with a lifetime guarantee. This free replacement set can shred not only important documents, but Christmas boxes, shoes, tennis balls, toys, lumber, and household garbage…just to name a few.

The BT6mo does have its down side…. At 13” x 7” x 24”, it does NOT fit on the shelf next to my books like the Fellows CRC34035 model.

The Border Times July 2019 4

The benefits of the BT6mo model shredder far outweigh any inconveniences. And compared with the mechanical model, it stands alone. It works equally well on or off the grid. All its power is self contained. It is self feeding….collecting whatever it feels requires shredding without the aid of human intervention. In fact, it prefers this feeding method. It requires no prep work, like folding or cutting to size. A work boot is handled as easily as an invitation to the White House.

When working alongside another BT shredder … like the older BT5yr model, the two can carry not just double, but quadruple the workload because of a phenomenon called jealousy which spurs each shredder to double its efforts.

The BT series continues working tirelessly until the job is done to its satisfaction, and never needs to shut down during the shredding process due to overheating.

When finished, It stops automatically to await the next task into which it flows quite seamlessly.

It is easily portable and can be used almost anywhere (some hotel restrictions may apply). It can be carried from room to room or from

indoors to outdoors. But more often it moves under its own power.

Lastly, for those who are so inclined, the numerous, irregularly shaped shreds can be collected, flattened, and used to create a jigsaw puzzle for those long, dark, winter nights.

Nancy Bekaert (author/photographer), Frye (BT6mo model), and Moz(BT5yr model) …. the Fellows CRC34035 is sulking on the shelf, and sends no greetings, kisses, or high 5’s.

The NBTC offers prizes to Border Terriers that qualify in the regular classes at specific AKC Earthdog Tests.July 20 & 21 the Finger Lakes KC offered a total of 4 tests, 2 per day. Despite the heat there was a decent BT entry. 7-20-2019, 2 tests, Regular classes, 20 Borders ran, 7 qualified; IQ, 5 Borders ran, 4 qualified. 7-21-2019, 2 tests, Regular classes, 17 Borders ran, 4 qualified; IQ, 4 Borders ran, 3 qualfied.

After all that digging, who better to inspect the liner pre-test than a Border Terrier?!

Marg Pough cooling off at the entry table.

FLKC made every effort to help keep exhibitors comfortable.

FLKC AKC Earthdog Test cont.

Shade for the judges, too, of course!

Mary Downs, her dog Shemar qualied in SE and also gained his SE title.

Mary judged IQ in one of the tests. Next to her is Susan Storey with her dog Jigs who qualified in IQ. " Her dog was rather quiet in terms of barking, but was working the whole time digging and biting the dowels." Susan came up from Maryland to also judged at the tests.

Judge Nancy Sankus with Gregg Dell. his dog qualfied and gined a title, too.

Many thanks to Amanda Pough for sending me the photos and information about the tests. Editor Jean Clark

2018 marked my last months as a Junior Handler, giving GCH Starkweather How Sweet the Sound (Amazing Grace) and me our last experience together at Westminster. Although I aged out of Juniors in February 2018, I had previously qualified for the Limited Junior Showmanship Competition at the Eastern States Exposition Center in West Springfield, Massachusetts, which is held annually in November. Over Thanksgiving Weekend, I competed with Grace amongst the most talented Junior Handlers in the Northeast. After being out of the ring for 9 months I was unsure of how Grace might behave, but with a bit of work and determination she settled back into her old and consistent routine: get in there, get it done, and get on my way back home. We went out with a bang after making the final cut of handlers and finishing the day making a clean sweep, taking the title of 2018 Northeast Best Junior Handler of the Year. Along with the title, I received a $1000 scholarship. This was an incredible honor, as Grace and I won Reserve Best Junior Handler in this Limited Class only a year before in 2017. These funds, in addition to the scholarship funds that I received from the American Kennel Club and the BTCA for academic achievement and involvement in the fancy of purebred dogs, were gratefully put towards my Georgetown education this past year. Although I only showed Grace through the middle of February in 2018, I managed to maintain my spot as #6 Terrier Junior Handler through the rest of the year. Additionally, I was named one of the Top 3 Owner-Handler Juniors in 2018. I could not have asked for a better finale for both my Amazing Grace and myself.

I would also like to thank the BTCA Scholarship Foundation for making me a 2019 Scholarship recipient, and for awarding me a scholarship for the second year in a row. The support I have received as a member of the Northeast Border Terrier Club andas an Owner-Handler of my beloved Grace has been overwhelming. My heart is so full of joy and pride for what I was able to accomplish with Grace in her astoundingly successful years as a show dog and as my Juniors partner. Thank you to everyone who has lifted us up. We are forever grateful.

Editor's notes, This past winter Louise Traska and I worked to find some new prizes to be given out at the performance events that NBTC offers prizes at. These include Agillity, Obedience, Rally, Earthdog and now AKC Scent Work. We settled on two items, a Drawstring Bag with the NBTC logo and a Stylus Pen. These, along with the remaining insulated Water Bottle Holders and reusable Nylon Bags will be given to or sent to qualifiers(one item per Q), in addition to a dog toy. The bag is a useful size and based on the photos from the FLKC earthdog test is a great success!

The AKC Scent Work trials in Sept. will be the first ones where the NBTC will be offering prizes to the BTqualifiers. I hope there are lots of Borders there.

This has been a fun issue to put together with so many contributions from members.

This is YOUR club and newsletter. The more contributions for the newsletter the more communication there is between members. It would be great to have some photos from the Earthdog Tests in August along with the September events. Candids at the earthdog test (see the FLKC photos for ideas), candids from around the ring, dogs doing the scent work, the potluck, before and after, please. Show everyone who didn't get there what we missed!

Comments, suggestion, stories, articles & photos are always welcome! Deadline for hte next issue is Sept. 30, articles, photos, stories, comments welcome any time

I look forward to hearing from YOU!
