Success at Show for Club Members

Submitted by Peter Fantham

Woodturning entries (left)

Bird carving entries (below)

Member John McConnell was the star of the show as he secured First place in the bird carving (Wren), Third with his Wagtail and Fourth with his Coal Tit. He then moved on to woodturning where he took First place with his “pyrographed” plate of the mouse on wheat ears , and Second with his sta g pyrography. Fellow members weren't without success as in the woodturning Dick Potter took Third spot with his candle holder whilst Digby Owen, that disciple of David Springett, took Fourth place. So to summarise, a clean sweep by DDWC!!!

John Mc then moved on to baking and took First place for his Coffee Cake in the men only class and Second place for his Date and Walnut Cake where he was up against the ladies. I understand that he was also awarded a trophy for accumulating the most points in the “men only” section, he clearly has no problems with a soggy bottom!!

September Meeting

Left - John Mc. gives a visitor the benef i t o f h i s a c c u m u l a t e d knowledge / sk i l l s and r ight , group leader Roger King keeps a close eye on his “class”.

September was a hands-on meeting and it was pleasing to see some new faces come through the door, lets hope their experience was to their satisfaction and they will be returning. Roger King had a well populated “carvers corner” set up and with John Mc’s help kept everyone busy.

The two club lathes were in use and Peter Fantham and Dick Potter took on the role of coach; meanwhile John Henbery demonstrated, and instructed, the use of a scroll saw.

Peter Fantham takes on the role of coach instructing visitor Cindy Law in a hollowing technique (very brave for first time on a lathe!) to produce a spectacles holder. She seemed delighted with the final product and hopefully she will return to further her skills.

Right - during a recent holiday on the Greek island of Symi, Peter Fantham and his lady wife visited a taverna (as you do!) and discovered that he isn’t the only person who turns large bowls! That would hold one heck of a large amount of moussaka!!

Derek Puplett took First place with his Bud Vase in Mahogany - c lever use of pa int , and a compressed air canister to produce the flowers. Second place was taken by James Sharpe (another fan of Jo Sonja!) whose Ash Dish finally made it to the table after three mini disasters on the lathe!! The place was shared with Dick Potter with his display of miniature hats on stands using Sapele and Maple. Third spot was occupied by Mike Browning for this nicely finished bowl in Oak.

Philip Jones’ tops couldn't quite spin into the placings.

Philip put forward the suggestion that we have a spinning top competition. A possible theme for the future - bonus points for the one whose top spins for the longest time!

October MeetingThis month should have featured a pyrography demonstration but unfortunately the person booked for the day clearly needs instruction in use of a diary. When we learned of this potential disaster on Thursday, committee members quickly pulled out all the stops and brought for ward some of the arrangements which had been pencilled in for the November hands-on meeting.

Some members were clearly disappointed and left early but for the remainder there were two lathes in operation with Eric Hudson and John Henbery in “coaching mode”. After a scramble for tools, Roger King was able to set up a “carvers’ corner”

Star of the show was secretary’s wife Liz King who came along at short notice to conduct a pyrography session. One table was put out for her and she ended up needing four! Well done Liz and thank you very much - hope to see you back soon.

Rob Purser tries his hand at pyrography (above left) and having cracked that (above) he moved on to carving. I understand that his next project is a set of balls for pub skittles!

Right - Chris Carlton-Bull chatted to members about the various sharpening “devices” he had brought along and even managed to find time to sharpen some chisels which had been used to open tins of paint etc. !!!!!

As someone commented, this was maybe a month early but then it wouldn't fit in w i th the No vember theme! James Sharpe’s love affair with acr ylic resin continues and gets him a first place.

First place went to Geoff Nellis for his square edged bowl in Bubinga. Fresh from his successes at Brailsford Show, John McConnell takes second place for his pyrography art. In third place was John Henbery with his lidded box in Olive Ash.

October Members’ (Open) Competition: continued

2nd.

Second place was taken by Mike Browning for his Square Edged Bowl in Paduak. Philip Jones had escaped from the garden in time to make his Garden String Holder in Yew, Beech and Oak to gain himself Third place. Eric Hudson seemed to be a month in advance with his Bowl in Teak containing fruit (!) while John Waring produced a (non-laminated!) Natural Edged Bowl.

Competition Themes 2015

Start planning now!! These are the competition themes to be used next year with the emphasis on the use of differing techniques.

March 2015 - A box with a carved lid.

May 2015 - Any item which includes at least three wooden flowers.

July 2015 - Any item featuring a spiral/twist.

Sept 2015 - Any item using laminate/segments (5 layers/segments minimum).

November 2015 - Any item which incorporates non-wood materials e.g pewter, resin, pottery etc.

Just to make it crystal clear, there is a competition EVERY month (except December) and themes apply for the months above. It is not compulsory to follow the theme but if you do so you will score a bonus point. Remember, all entries should have been produced within the last 12 months.

So who is looking at ddwc.co.uk?In August we had 216 visits, 163 were from surfers located in the UK, 26 from Brazil, 4 from Italy, 3 from France and 1 from Algeria.

Ready and waiting . . . . . . . . . . . .

This year at the A.G.M.when the winners of the monthly club competitions are presented with their trophies they will have something to keep. Member Bill Morley thought it would be a nice touch if the winners had a permanent trophy they could retain as well as the “annual” trophy which is returned after a year. With this in mind he has kindly set to work and produced these two splendid trophies; thanks Bill for your thought and skill.

Bill’s Benchnotes

The prizes for this year’s club competitions are awaiting winners!

Woods used: Oak, Ash, Hornbeam, Holly, Hawthorn and Walnut. Served with a light dressing of oil, colour, glue, copper and stainless-steel.

Best wishes, Bill Morley.

Another reminder!!!

The December meeting is the occasion of the club AGM when you can put yourself forward for the position of Chairman etc. When all the boring stuff has been concluded its time for the Xmas Fuddle!!

Also lets not forget what has been called the Great Tool, Timber and Tackle Sale!!

Now in its sixth year this “bring and buy” sale continues to prove popular. If you have anything kicking about the house that you think might bring in a bob or two e.g. that stuffed donkey you bought in Spain or those sophisticated art prints you purchased on a Paris short break, then bring it along and put it on display. It doesn’t have to be “wood related” and might make you some pocket money. At the end of proceedings a small donation to the club would be in order though not compulsory - e.g. 5 to 10% of your sales.

Also there will be a raffle and so your contribution would be welcome - more information from our Chairman.

Here’s an interesting item which would prove a challenge for any turner who thinks he’s good at miniature work. The apple is 50mm across which gives you some idea of the size of the individual items it contains. I particularly liked the teapot complete with handle and spout, now that’s a challenge!!

Now that’s just weird!!!

When Roger King sent me these photos I initially wondered what sort of place he had been to ! ! It transpired he had been to Yand les Autumn Show and this was one rather unusua l ca r v ing which caught his eye!

Right: a selection o f tur n ings on display and left: some rather tasty looking carvings - ice creams, fruit p ie s e tc . not forget t ing the cauliflower !

Another challenge!!In the picture (right) you will see a 4ʺ″ nail inserted into a piece of finely crafted cherry (!!) and twelve other nails of the same size. Your challenge is to balance ALL the twelve nails on the head of the single nail (at the same time!). The nail and stand cannot be moved to a different orientation and you cannot use any other equipment e.g. you cannot put the nails into a plastic cup and balance this on the single nail!! I will personally give a bottle of wine to the first person who makes up a similar piece and e-mails me a picture of the solution. (Solution to be revealed at A.G.M. if no one comes forward with the answer) Editor

Earlier   in   the   year   vice-‐chair   Derek   Puple4   visited   the   Edinburgh   Fringe   Fes:val   and   at   one   point   the  sound   of   someone   chopping  wood   caught   his   a4en:on.     He   quickly   discovered   the   above   gentleman  “knocking  seven  shades  of  ****  out  of  a  lump  of  wood  with  a  large  hammer  and  chisel”!  (his  words,  not  mine).    The  second  picture  was  taken  less  than  24  hours  aJer  the  first  one,  so  he’s  a  pre4y  quick  worker.

The British Bird Carving Championship 2014 - Bakewell

Once again there were some splendid carvings on show at Bakewell, many forcing the onlooker to wonder whether it was real or not I know the first one isn’t a bird but I felt that a Grayling was most appropriate for Bakewell as the local river has a healthy population of “the lady of the stream”

Ask not what the club can do for you, but what you can do for the club (with apologies to JFK!!)

A recent straw poll at the September meeting indicated that members wanted five professional demonstrations out of the 10 available months and structured hands-on for the remaining 5 months. Members of the committee have been giving this some thought and hoped to introduce the new format at the November meeting though circumstances demanded that this be brought forward to October. But what do YOU want out of the club? Please tell committee members so that the necessary arrangements can be made and don’t forget that the committee welcomes any help that YOU can give. There’s an awful lot of talent in our club, what we need to do is channel that ability and help other members, especially new ones, to learn/improve skills. Offer your services, don’t hide your light under a bushel and according to Yahoo! Answers - To "hide your light under a bushel" simply means that you have hidden away your talent, gifts, abilities and are not using them in anyway for the improvement of yourself or anyone else. Note the words “anyone else” !!
