Pest News: Sap Beetles________________________This spring the blooms in your newsletter editor’s cactus garden were decimated by hundreds of thousands of beetles. These guys devoured petals, stamens and pistils. From left to right (below) you can see the beetles on a beautiful pink bloom, a half-eaten yellow flower, and the dried corpses of some consumed flowers. The beetles are about 3 mm long, voracious and are good fliers. They showed up in the garden in the middle of May and stuck around for about a month. They were observed elsewhere (targeting cacti) on the Redlands this spring.

Meredith Shrader, the CSU Area Extension Etymologist, confirmed our suspicion that these little nasties are a type of nitidulid beetle, aka sap beetle. Sadly, control options are limited because of the pollinators that were visiting the flowers. The good news is that soapy water does the trick. Having taken up the challenge, club member Kenton Seth reports:

“I happened to have soapy water in the truck …. and so we tried it on the beetles while at the same time were able to shoo the adorable tiny wasps so they didn’t get doused ….Total success. The ^(*@%s were dead in seconds … and the soap dried quickly, safe for the pollinators to come right back.

About 1 tablespoon of Dr. Bronner’s hippy soap in a quart hand sprayer.”
