MCAA Student Retrospective at Corner Gallery
Fire Losses for Four Members
The show will honor the students who attended workshops during 2017 and who successfully completed a work of art related to the class. The front windows of the Corner Galley will be dedicated to their art during the month of November. The show will open on First Friday, November 3rd from 5-8pm. In addition, the show will feature work of the artist instructors: Tom Zephyrs, Nancy Collins, Clark Mitchell, Ursula Partch, and Kate Gould.
In deepest sympathy with Sherry Breeden, Mary Monroe, Cathy Monroe and June Oster, who have all lost their homes and studios, the MCAA Board has voted to provide each with a $200 gift card to help replace their art supplies.
The new scope of education will come in three types. “Meet the Artist” will be a new lecture series giving the opportunity to view their work, hear them discuss their methodology and ask them questions. It is also a time to spend time with other members in a relaxed setting. Continued on page 3

Letter from the Editor
Kathleen Gordon-Burke
There is so much information in this newsletter it will take some time to read it all… but you should. Fire has taken the homes of artists, and others, now is the time for healing. In the case of artists, they have lost their art, studios and supplies. There are many avenues toward healing and many are noted here. Also, MCAA events are many. I hope to see you at all of them! Your Editor, Kathleen
A Letter from Mary Monroe
I would like to thank all the people in the general Ukiah community for all the concern and generosity that has been shown. I am not the only artist who has lost a home but all their accumulated work and art supplies as well. My heart goes out to my fellow fire victims. Several of our MCAA artists have offered to share studio space, invited me to paint with them and given me art supplies. Two of my favorite art teachers have also given me supplies. The good news is my husband and I are moving into a rental owned by one of our fellow artists and I will have a place to paint. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. Xx Mary Waters Monroe
Call for Entries
As you may recall, the Plein-air workshop scheduled for Saturday was cancelled and refunds are being mailed to those who were signed up. However, Tom Zephyrs still wanted to go to Testa Winery that day to paint and was willing to offer a short demonstration to anyone who was interested in joining him. That is such a wonderful gesture on his part and I am sure there will be some of you that would love to spend a few hours at this lovely place and take him up on this offer. Big thanks to the generous owners of Testa Winery for hosting our group.

Artist Proposals for Ukiah Mural organizations, community
members, and the city" -- will inspire other artists and arts organizations to carry out future public art projects throughout the county. Laura Fogg and Art Center Ukiah have been instrumental in raising the donations locally that were required in order to receive matching funds from the California Arts Council. This public/private collaboration strengthens our community, creates economic opportunity for artists, brings much needed state funds to our community, and results in a more lively streetscape that reflects our sense of place, character, and pride of community." It is anticipated that work can begin on one or more murals by spring of 2018 and the opportunity is open to any artist who resides in Mendocino County. The public had a hand in defining the desired themes for the proposed mural at an open house held in early February. A committee further distilled the criteria down to the following: The selected mural should show 1. Pride in our unique and diverse community; 2. Ukiah's characteristic landscape of agriculture and beautiful natural scenery, and, 3. A positive sense of the future.
The Arts Council of Mendocino County announces its plans to award $14,000 to a Mendocino County artist for a mural in Ukiah. The guidelines and instructions for entry can be found at www.ArtsMendocino.org. Entries are due no later than December 15, 2017. The mural is funded in part by a Local Impact grant from the California Arts Council. All projects extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations that have limited access to the arts. With support from the California Arts Council, the Arts Council of Mendocino County will coordinate and commission the first work of public art to be approved through the City of Ukiah's new Public Art Policy. Alyssum Wier, Arts Council of Mendocino County Executive Director, reports that her hope is that this first project, which will require "continued partnership and collaboration between arts

Svetlana Artemoff… will be exhibiting her work at Yorkville Cellars, in the valley, starting November 4 for 3 months and doing a short demo on November 4th and 5th, 12-3pm called "Painterly Portabellos". Participants will try their hand at some of the intriguing techniques available in watercolor for creating texture. The weekend is devoted to the release of the winery's new Malbec releases and part of the county-wide celebration, Mushroom, Wine & Beer Festival.
Dorleen McBride… escaped the horrendous fires in October to visit former MCAA member Gigi Brown at her lovely condo in Santa Maria. She and her cat Marigold were very hospitable and Gigi had many things planned for the weekend. We attended a Mystery Theatre dinner at the Santa Maria County Club, visited Avila Beach and their small but interesting Aquarium, had a nice lunch at the Athletic Club nearby and I dabbled my toes in the very cold Pacific. The next day was a visit to Los Olivos where we came across a fantastic cooperative.
