It has been a tricky start to 2015 for the Nottingham Lions, two big home victories against the Coventry Blaze and Deeside Dragons early in the new year, were followed by an unwanted run of six straight defeats, which has left Matt Bradbury’s side out of the running for a top four finish in NIHL Laidler D2, this time around. However, as the final month of the 2014/15 season came into sight, the Lions appeared to have put their bad form behind them, thanks to a recent 6-1 road win over the Blaze at the Skydome, followed by a creditable 2-2 home draw against the already promoted Telford Tigers.

Player development and commitment to bringing through the next generation of young talent continues to be the main priority for Nottingham and despite being out of the running for promotion and silverware in this campaign, the Lions are looking at the bigger picture and with so many promising youngsters starting to find their feet in the senior game, the future of hockey is looking very bright down at the National Ice Centre.

In February, the Lions were once again making the headlines for all the right reasons , when sixteen year old Jessica Urquhart made history by becoming the first ever female to play for the team, with Head Coach Bradbury turning to a crop of newly eligible Under-16 players including Tyler Poole, Ilija Kolosnicins and Owen Davis.

The Lions’ focus for the remainder of this season is now to finish as strongly as possible, with many senior squad members knowing they will be playing for a spot in next season’s roster. Added to the mix, will also be a plethora of talented Under-18s, who are all eager to make the permanent step up to senior hockey come September, with many of them already beginning to look like mainstays in what should be a very exciting 2015/16 campaign.

EDITION 6 - APRIL 2015

For a generation now, nutritionists and doctors have told us that a low-fat diet is the key to losing weight, managing cholesterol, and preventing health problems. We switched to low-fat foods. But the shift didn’t make us healthier, probably because we cut back on healthy fats as well as harmful ones. We increased our intake of starches such as bread, rice and pasta, which can bloat you and leave you feeling sluggish. Any athletes involved in impact sports need a small layer of fat to be able to absorb contact and protect the muscles, bones, nerves, ligaments and tendons from injury, and fat moves vitamins (A, D, E, and K) throughout the body Also fat is the highest source of energy, with our seemingly unlimited storage capacity for fat, makes fat our largest reserve of energy. While these calories are less accessible to athletes performing quick, intense efforts like sprinting fat is essential for longer, slower lower intensity and endurance exercise such as gentle jogging and cycling .

Health fats such as olive oil, sunflower oil, seeds and nuts, peanut butter and fatty fish are good for your heart, your cholesterol, and your overall health. Continue to limit your bad fats of dairy products, fatty meat, chocolate, desserts and fried food to help decrease the risk of disease and elevate cholesterol.

DID YOU KNOW? FAT IS GOOD AGAIN

CENTRAL SPORTS NEWSThere has been lots of sport played by the college academy teams since the start of 2015. The Basford United Academy programme continues to move along at a pace. The first team are sitting very pretty in top spot of the Youth Alliance Football Conference East Midlands Division, The team are unbeaten this season and have 12 wins out of 13 games played. The college third team sit 4th in the Association of Colleges (AoC) East Midlands Category 2A league with high hopes of keeping pressure on the top three towards the end of the season.

The Central Rangers rugby team narrowly lost a thrilling AoC Plate match against a more experienced Derby College side at the end of January. With the odds stacked against them at half time the Central team managed to score 17 unanswered points but lost to a last minute try and conversion. There is one more fixture against Bilborough College on the 18th March which will take place at West Bridgford RFC. The future bodes well for the Rangers who have a number of players returning for next season.

The second half the season has been slow for the Central girls’ team with several matches postponed because of poor weather. Most recently the girls went down 6-3 to a strong Lincoln side and they put up a good show (lost 4-2) against a University of Nottingham side which filled in a game at short notice when a college fixture was postponed.

The women currently sit third in the league but will be aiming for a top three finish.

COLLEGE DARTS ACADEMY HITS THE SPOT

On a day when the world’s top darts players came to Nottingham as the Capital FM Arena hosted the Betway Premier League, Central College Nottingham was granted approval to become an affiliated Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) centre for its Darts Academy at Clifton. The College is only the second in the country to reach the charter standard which confirms the facility has met a professional standard and will allow the Academy to be linked with the PDC to promote darts to a younger audience and encourage participation in the sport. The link-up means the college can tap into PDC resources to aid its promotion and could mean top players visiting the College to promote darts in Nottingham. The Academy opened earlier this year, is open to full-time students and has been used by over 300 students and school pupils to date, including sport students who are linking it to their sport curriculum and others who want to improve their game. The academy is based in the specially-built Room 180 and is run by current darts professional Colin Osborne, a former UK Open finalist, who said: “This is the icing on the cake really, to have reached this level shows how seriously we are taking it.” Former two-time World Matchplay winner and PDC Director Rod Harrington, who visited the centre on Thursday 12 March, said: “We have invested heavily in the future of the sport in recent years and Academy affiliations like this are a hugely important part of the jigsaw which will hopefully produce the stars of the future. The Darts Academy at Clifton is a superb facility and is already proving a popular venue for the Clifton College students.” Central College Curriculum Manager for Sport, Gary Horsley said: “The affiliation gives the college a level of kudos that we have met the PDC’s requirements. The facility is top class and now we have been accredited it will really help recruitment. This is the last piece in the jigsaw and now we need to encourage more players to come forward and improve their game.” For more details on the Academy or courses at Central College Nottingham contact 0115 914 6414.
