AN INTERVIEW WITH RAFFERTY Y6 I took the opportunity to catch up with an only slightly jet-lagged Rafferty following his return from the Caribbean last week. Rafferty was first introduced to the world of Karate at the age of 4 since when, in just 7 short years, he has been propelled to the dizzy heights of the World Championship Competition in Curacao! On his return flight he ran the risk of being charged for extra baggage as his luggage included two splendid Silver Medals! Inspired in his early years by Kung Fu Panda(!) Rafferty currently follows a rigorous training schedule which includes up to 6 classes a week across the county and beyond. His competition focus includes the disciplines of Kata and Kumite. In the former, the focus is on points scoring, not hurting the opponent, whilst the latter discipline demonstrates the art of self-defence through a series of set pieces or ‘pretend fighting’, without a partner. These moves are accompanied by vocal calls or shouts designed to frighten off any opponent. With his sights set firmly on the Olympics in 2024, Rafferty has the focus and determination to achieve everything he sets his mind to – second in the world at age 10? Rafferty is on top of the world and looks set to stay there!

SCHOOL UNIFORM A reminder that all pupils should return to school after the half term in full Winter Uniform. (Nursery uniform remains the same). A Winter Uniform list for both girls and boys can be found on the school's website. http://www.sacredheartwadhurst.org.uk/parents/uniform. So we would suggest, if you haven't already, please get your little ones to quickly try on any previous winter uniform to check it still fits before the Autumn term finishes on Tuesday 17 October. As usual, uniform can be purchased online and collected from the school office during term time. Or can be purchased by cash or card at the school uniform shop. We are now starting to build up our second hand stock and do have a small selection of second hand winter uniform available to purchase. The school uniform shop will be open as usual Monday 16 October but opening at the slightly earlier time of 8.30am for your convenience. Over the half term holiday, the uniform shop will also be open for any last minute, forgotten purchases/collections on Wednesday 25 October 9-10.30am. Please also ensure any new uniform is clearly named before your child returns to school. Have a lovely half term break and we look forward to seeing all the children in their lovely, warmer winter uniform on the 30th October! Karen and Sarah x

FOOTBALL Report by Hugh Y6 On Wednesday 11th October Sacred Heart School played a football match against Bricklehurst School. In the 1st quarter, after lots of defending, Bricklehurst managed to squeeze in a lucky goal. We upped our game and prevented any more goals with a strong defence from both Aaron and

Rafferty. In the 2nd quarter Jack scored a fabulous goal for us. Unfortunately, Bricklehurst replied with yet another lucky goal, despite Harry’s immense efforts to keep our goal clear. After half-time we came back at them with fight and determination not to lose. With help from Will and Olly, the ball was successfully passed up to Jack who scored, bringing the match equal at 2-2. Regrettably, once again with great luck, Bricklehurst managed to thread a ball through our midfield and went on to score, this one taking them into the lead at 3-2. Out of the blue, and with a great interception, Jack took the ball up the wing and, with a powerful cross, scored the final goal of the match: 3-3! We would like to thank the parents who supported us at the game and also the dinner ladies for the post-match refreshments.

HOCKEY v St Ronans ‘B’ Team – Report by Mia Y5 On Wednesday 11th October Y5/6 girls B Team played against St Ronans. We started off well even

though it was raining. We made some good tackles especially Sophie, Avaani and Elena. Eireánn managed to intercept the ball when it was coming towards our goal. Alana did some good passing. There was a save by Mia, Goal Keeper, when the ball was heading towards our goal. Milly managed to get into open spaces so she could get the ball. In the second half Amelia, Georgia and Ava swapped with Eireánn, Milly and Alana. Amelia managed to get in space and steal the ball from our opponents. Whenever the ball was coming towards our goal Avaani and Sophie did a great job to hit it off or send it in the other direction. Mia did well to move around when the ball was coming to our goal. Ava did very well to save the ball and tackle. Georgia was great at getting into space

and losing the person who was marking her. Ava and Eireánn swapped and again Eireánn did excellent tackling. The final score was 0-0 Thank you to Mrs Overy for coaching us, the parents for supporting us even in the rain, the B Team for putting a lot of effort into the game and to St Ronans for the lovely match tea.

Another busy and exciting week at Sacred Heart School where learning is fun!

Reception class has been learning about all about Autumn. We have been for a walk to look for changes in our environment and made some interesting Autumn art.

So with the pennies and pounds counted and all guesses for the height of the cake in, we are pleased to announce that a phenomenal has been raised by Sacred Heart through the Macmillan Coffee Morning and the 'Guess the Height of the Cake' sweep-stake. What a fabulous effort, which goes to show that, though our school may be small, our hearts are

big. Thank you! The winner of the sweep-stake was Amelia Mitchley in Year 6 who correctly guessed 94cm in height and has won £24. Thank you everybody who baked, chatted, drank coffee, tea and water, donated, guessed and counted. As Pru Leith might say, it was definitely worth the calories! Lydia PTA

Year 5 has been learning all about Rudyard Kipling. We read extracts from "The Jungle Book" and also shared many of the "Just So" stories. We identified that each story starred a main character who was an animal. We

spent time analysing Kipling's style and themes in the stories. Each story started out with an animal who had a particular fault which then went on to cause a permanent change to the animal's appearance. We also noted other elements of his style, for example use of relative clauses, repetition, rhyme and alliteration. We all then planned and wrote our own "Just So" story using these elements to copy Rudyard Kipling's style. Once we had completed and edited our stories we read them first to each other, giving and

receiving constructive feedback on our story telling techniques. Armed with this feedback we then shared our stories with children in Year 2. Year 2 was a lovely, receptive audience and really enjoyed hearing the stories. On Thursday 12th October, Years 5 and 6 took part in a Shakespeare workshop at the school. Two actors led the workshop and provided background information about the life and times of Shakespeare and taught the children acting tips and details about his plays. This year the focus was on Macbeth and the children really enjoyed recreating scenes from the play.
