From 29 October – 2 November, Katharine Hutson and John Kennett accompanied twelve members of the AISE-West MUN program to an exemplary conference at International School of The Hague. Over 1,000 students attend this prestigious conference, from more than 30 schools in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. Our students, ranging from 10th to 12th grade, did a great job representing the countries of Norway and Burkina Faso on seven different committees and GAs, on current, relevant global issues such as:

• protecting individual rights to privacy in the digital age; • the question of the production of Genetically Modified Foods; • resolving the global water shortage; and • strengthening the coordination of efforts to combat human

trafficking.

Attending from AISE-West were; Ayda Moftah, Batoul el Adawi, Farida el Bakry, Omar Taha, Othman Bdier, Mohamed Serajeldin, Artyom Shapovalov, Youssef Omar, Faisal Johar, Salma Abdel Samie, Youssef Shafik, and Amy el Sherbiny.

They spent three days lobbying and debating their issues, while making friends and having a great time. Several of the students’ resolutions were co-sponsored by other countries and approved in commissions.

While no awards were given out at the end of the conference, most of our students left feeling that they had contributed greatly to their committees, and had increased the rigor of the debate.

We did have some “down” times, well. Mr. Kennett arranged with his friend, H.E. Dr. Brett Mason, the Australian Ambassador to The Hague, for us to attend morning tea at the Ambassador’s residence. We had a lovely time, and were able to spend over an hour with the Ambassador. The students asked questions ranging from current world issues to life as a diplomat. It was a wonderful experience for us all, and we most appreciated Mr. Kennett making the arrangements for this once-in-a lifetime opportunity.

The day after the conference, with a late-night flight, we spent the day taking in the culture and sights of Amsterdam. We wandered through the Rijksmuseum admiring the splendor of Dutch artists, climbed on the I AMSTERDAM sign, ate fun food and did a bit of souvenir shopping. The trip was a huge success, thanks in no small part to the hard work of the twelve students who undertook to represent AISE-West and their country is a positive way. This school is better for them and their efforts.

Teaching  Assistants  of  the  Month  November  2015

Ms. Hala volunteered on her own to work after school twice a week with a student who has been struggling academically in the class. Since working with this student, he has begun to show progress. And just last week a new student was added to the class, who will need some time to catch up because of the late start, but Ms. Hala has invited him to work with her after school as well. Ms. Hala has gone above and beyond her job description from her own desire to see these students succeed and grow in her class.

We are pleased to announce that Ms. Hala Derar, KG1F, and Ms. Sylvia Eskander, KG1B are the TEACHING ASSISTANTS OF THE MONTH for the month of November.

Ms. Sylvia was nominated not only by her homeroom teacher, but also by two of the specialist teachers, who praised her for adding so much to their classes. In PE, she helps with supervising games, setting up equipment and she participates fully with the students in the activities. In Music class, Ms. Sylvia is a “perfect example of what a TA should be.” She is always participating in the activities and is always positive and attentive in everything the students do.

Our library earned over 145 books from the vendors in exchange for providing a venue for the event! These will be available for student check-out.

A School Play---Aladdin!! Come one come all!! The student production of Aladdin is scheduled to be performed on December 2, 3, 4th at our AIS West Auditorium. Curtain time is 7PM and should end around 8:30PM and we suggest that you arrive early for good seating. Admission to the play will be only 50 LE per person (any age) and you pay at the door. Please no crying babies or take them outside the auditorium and no cell phones. The students worked very hard to put on a great performance and we do not want any distractions.

We hope to see you there!

AIS West Swim Club participated in the international METs meet at Al Hayah International Academy in Cairo on November 7. The way these school meets work is that only schools as a whole get recognized. Swimmers compete in their individual races, and if they win top 3 places, they collect points for their school. Eventually, all the points are summed up, and the school with most points is the winner. Given that 5 other large teams were taking part, we knew we were setting ourselves up with loss. Our small team of 3 swimmers knew the rules from the very beginning, so they were aware of the fact that they would automatically lose if they participated. They knew we could not win enough races to have a sum of points large enough to guarantee us a trophy. Nevertheless, they wanted to wake up early on a Saturday morning, travel to the opposite part of the city, and spend the whole day there among the judging eyes of competitive peers and referees. They showed maturity and dedication, because they were able to recognize the value of the experience. Competed against 5 other teams and managed to get 7 medals and recognitions. Lana Shafey won gold for 100-meter freestyle and bronze for 50-meter freestyle for girls under 14. Malak Hassouna won gold for 50-meter backstroke, 50-meter butterfly and 50-meter freestyle, silver for 100 meter individual medley, and the Award for Best Overall Female Swimmer under 14.

Idris Rarih didn’t win any medals, but he did achieve good results and show tremendous support for other swimmers. Even when his races were over, he did not want to go home when his dad asked him to. He insisted he stayed to cheer and clap for the girls. In conclusion, although we officially did not win anything, we showed them that we were small, but mighty, and that we can face the fear of embarrassment and the unknown. That earned us glorious (self)respect, so we will keep encouraging others to join us next time, because it was worth it.
