After six weeks of rehearsals, Tenby Schools, Ipoh proudly presented a
spectacular show on 28 June 2014. It would definitely be a memorable day for
everyone who was there and especially for the little ones who took part in the
performances. The Great Tenby Circus really did come to town that day!

Have you heard the saying
“Laughter is the best medicine”?
Laughing and having fun play an
important part in our lives. We all love
to be entertained and to enjoy our-
selves. For a long time, the circus has
been a special place where people
from many parts of the world go to be
entertained, to laugh and to have fun.
Trained exotic animals wow the
crowds, while jugglers and acrobats
amuse the audience with their skills, and clowns could be seen putting on their funny tricks and acts during
the show.
Do you know that ‘circus’ is a Latin word meaning “round”? In the past, the typical circus was held within
an oval or circular showground with tiered seating often flanking the edges. Other circuses performed under
large tents.
The theme “Circus” was chosen for this year’s Production Day as the children had very little knowledge
about it when they had it as a topic in their curriculum. Many have never been or had the opportunity to go to
a circus or know what it is like to be at a circus. As our children did put up a wonderful performance in class
and had a great time, we decided to bring it alive for all to enjoy, laugh and have fun.
Ours may not be the Ringling Bros. and Barum & Bailey circus, but it is our very own Tenby Circus. Our
children from IISEYC and TISEYC, from Nursery to Year 2 and KSSR 1 had done an awesome job to give
their best performances for the day. Bravo and a Big Thank You to all teachers and staff for making this
event a successful and memorable one.

Transition Trip for the Year 1 of IISEYC
As our Year 1 students from IIS Early Years Centre moving to Year 2 in TIS Early Years Centre at Meru
Raya campus for the New Academic Year in August 2014, we organised a visit to the Meru School on
Wednesday, 2nd
July 2014. This was to familiarise the children with the new school, classroom
environment and to meet their new class teacher. This trip was also to build gradual excitement in the
student body so that the transition will be a fun experience for all.

Tenby Schools Malaysia’s CSR Project with Persatuan Daybreak
(L-R) Mrs Lai, Puan Sri Dato’ Sandra Lee and Mr Michael Fernando.
Tenby Schools Ipoh spearheaded its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by
inviting Persatuan DAYBREAK to manufacture and supply socks to all Tenby Schools
in Malaysia. Currently there are five Tenby Schools – in Ipoh, Penang, Setia Eco Park
in Shah Alam, Miri in Sarawak and Setia Eco Gardens in Johor Bahru with a total of
4,300 students.
DAYBREAK provides vocational skills training for people with learning, intellectual
and physical disabilities and empowers them to become self-reliant, independent and
integrated members of society. With the approval of the Perak State Education Depart-
ment, DAYBREAK is now selling their socks to schools in Perak.
DAYBREAK’s Acting General Manager, Mr. Michael Fernando said, “The socks
manufactured for the students of Tenby Schools are of a higher grade than the regular
school socks produced by DAYBREAK. These socks are manufactured from a cotton
spandex blend, which provides better breathability and greater comfort.” The cotton
yarn for the socks are also sourced locally from a textile manufacturer in Batu Pahat,
ensuring it is 100% Malaysian made.
Mrs. Lai, Director of Tenby Schools Ipoh received the first batch of the socks from
Puan Sr Dato’ Sandra Lee, the Executive Chairperson of DAYBREAK and Mr. Michael
Fernando, Acting General Manager of DAYBREAK at the school on 8 July 2014.
An Experience of being in a 19th Century English Ball
Year 10 literature students experienced a
19th Century English ball in June as part of their
preparation for their prose exam. Students are
studying ‘Northanger Abbey’ by Jane Austen
and the text is heavily influenced by the tradi-
tions of the time period.
Dressed in their best attire, students were
given a variety of ranks ranging from servants to
Lords and Ladies before entering the ‘ballroom’
in D Block, in order of importance. There
students learnt the necessity of formal introduc-
tions, before dinner was announced by servant
Balasubaramiam (Yr 10 Green), who said, ‘I
was glad to play a servant because it gave me
insight into how they were treated and allowed
me to compare with how maids are treated
now.’
Dining in the staff room, students enjoyed
high caliber chicken soup whilst learning the
correct way to conduct themselves at a 19th
Century table. Edina (Yr 10 Green) said, ‘It was
stressful because of the rules and regulations

Afterwards, as is custom, the dancing
began. Students were taught the correct
way to invite a partner of worth to the floor
and move gracefully. The lesson ended with
a reflection on what had been learnt. Most
students found themselves glad to be free of
such intensely restrictive social etiquette:
especially the rule stating that over dinner
one can only converse with the person
either side of them.
Ezilaan Irraivan (Yr 10 Green) reflected
on the experience, ‘It was fun and overall a
creative way to learn about the etiquette of
the time.’

Shakespearean Drama Fest
It was a thrilling week of Shakespearean drama with troupes from Tenby Ipoh’s Sixth Form bringing
Shakespeare’s stories to audiences at various schools in Ipoh in conjunction with the 450th anniversary of
the birth of the Swan of Avon.
On 23rd June 2014, Sixth Formers of Cohort 9 staged “Macbeth” at St Michael’s Institution Ipoh. Led
by director Nicole Fong, the students of Cohort 9 had been practising for the performances every
Monday since January 2014 as part of their theatre practice class.
The Sixth Formers had another opportunity to showcase their thespian skills at SMK Methodist (ACS)
Ipoh on 3rd July 2014.
“It was a great moment staging our play at these two schools which have seen spectacular dramatic
productions in their school history,” said Sanika Renganadan, President of the Sixth Form (Cohort 9).
On 8th and 9th July 2014, Cohort 8 students added another vista to the Shakespearean experience at
Tenby Schools Ipoh when they staged “A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream” for the International School and
for SM Tenby Ipoh. Directed by Sixth Former Vanya Verma, the play recreated the comedy of human
errors set in the magical world of Fairy Queen Titania and Fairy King Oberon.
“The drama experience has welded our class together into a superb working unit of team players,”
remarks Vanya. “My classmates enjoyed working together on many fronts to orchestrate the successful
performances.”
“It has certainly given me greater poise and confidence in public speaking and in expressing myself
more eloquently,” opined Chong Chin Leong who acted as Demetrius in the play.

Historic First on the New Campus
The date Tuesday 7th July will be remembered as a historic date when the first football
match was played between the alumni and present staff and students on our new campus at
Meru Raya.
Among the old boys who visited their alma mater were Yul Rahim Zaman (Holland),
Dexter Yip (Hong Kong), Yoghan & Suthan (brothers from KL), Ng Chun Kiat (Australia) and
Chan Chee Wai (Australia).
Mr Neil Page and Mr Ang Ken Meng were star players in the host team which was largely
made up of Sixth Formers. Inspired by the FIFA World Cup craze, the host team won 7-5.
Tenby Eagles Set to Soar
Every year in July, it is the season
for Tenby’s graduate students to set off for
their higher studies. On 8th July 2014, four
ex-students of SM Tenby Ipoh (Graduating
Class 2012) dropped in to say farewell to
their beloved teachers and friends before
leaving for study destinations, far and near.
They are Jessebelle Foo, Michael Loo,
Nicole Hooi and Yong Wen Di.
“ We are here to thank Madam Lee
Yam Sei and all our beloved teachers who
have guided us so well in past years. We
owe them an immense debt of gratitude,”
declared Jessebelle Foo who will be
studying criminology at the University of
West England, Bristol.

The last week in June saw Tenby International Secondary School’s first ever Excel Week. Excel Week
is an opportunity for students to achieve excellence outside of the normal classroom environment through
a range of trips, visits, leadership activities, independent learning projects, and intervention. Excel Week
offered the chance for staff to extend young people’s learning and to enrich their understanding and
appreciation of themselves, others and the world around them. Alongside activities outside of school in-
cluding residentials and day trips, we also offered a range of exciting learning activities in school. Excel
Week included a trip for each of the year groups 7 - 10. Year 7 headed off to Lost World of Tambun for a
day of jungle trekking and team building activities; Year 8 went to Taiping to see the sites and climb
Maxwell Hill; and Year 9 and Year 10 attended two separate 3 day 2 night residentials to Penang. Within
school we saw a range of activities from French cooking, movie making, Tenby’s The Apprentice, sporting
competitions, and much much more. On the following pages you can find articles and photographs of just
some of the events which took place.
Here are some of the highlights…
A Trip to AEON Kinta City

She-An and Phitchaya, the winning team.
“On Friday the 27th of June I, Ms. Kelly and 6 students em-
barked on an adventure; using English in the real world. It was a great trip involving teamwork, communication and creativity. Throughout their time at AEON students were given a variety of tasks to work through in pairs. These tasks ranged from finding ingredients for a recipe to planning how to decorate a living room. Much fun was had by all and everyone worked really hard to get the most points but here I can announce that the winning team was Phitchaya, Year 8 Blue and She-An, Year 8 yellow. Thanks to those students who attended and to Ms Kelly for all her hard work and photography skills!”

Years 7 & 8 Educational Trip to Ulu Kinta Water Treatment Plant & GeoScience Museum
There we were able to see the whole
process of treating water before it is made
safe for public consumption. We were
shown the safety equipment and proce-
dures which are available in the plant. We
later went to the dam and was awestruck
by the picturesque environment. We took a
group photo at the dam and I must say it
was simply an amazing sight!
After stopping by to have our lunch we
continued our visit; this time to the Geo
science Museum. We were so excited to
see lots of different types of rocks, which
we learnt during our Science lessons.
There were real gemstones on display and
we saw diamonds, rubies and sapphires.
There was also a huge dinosaur at the
entrance! The display there included some
magnificent tools and equipment used for
mining tin and iron extraction.
Overall we really had a lot of fun today
and gained a lot of knowledge. I hope we
will have more trips like this in future.
On Tuesday 24th June 2014, the Year 7
& 8 went on an educational trip. The trip
was organized by the Science Curriculum
Area and we were accompanied by the
following Science teachers; Puan Zalyah,
Ms. Amy, Mr. Lim and Mr. Lawrence
We departed from school at 9:00am
and first headed to the Ulu Kinta water
treatment plant. It was not that far from
Tenby campus and it only took us about
45mins by bus. Upon reaching the Ulu
Kinta water treatment plant, we were wel-
comed by En. Hairi, the Operations
Manager of the plant. Everyone was
excited when they saw the slide presenta-
tion about the water treatment plant. We
were also briefed about the construction of
the Sultan Azlan Shah dam which is not too
far away from the plant. We were
disappointed when the video presentation
of the construction of the dam stopped mid-
way and would not play. At this point, Puan
Zalyah made a request to En. Hairi if we
could actually go and see the dam instead
of just watching the video of its construc-
tion. To our delight, En. Hairi agreed to this
request and that really made our day!

Years 7 & 8 - A Day Trip to Perak Equestrian Center & Geoscience
Museum
Tuesday, 24th June, Year 7 & 8 students visited the Perak Equestrian Center and the Geoscience Museum. It
took about half an hour to reach the Perak Equestrian Center. First, we saw one of the rider named Simeon riding
on a chocolate brown horse called Eater. He rode the horse around the ground and made it jump a lot of times.
Then many students took picture with the horse. At the stables there were many horses like Paul, Shadow , Alfie &
Harry. We saw the horses being bathed and fed. We also had the chance to pat the horse.
At 11:00am, we left the Equestrian Centre, passed the old Tenby School campus and headed for the Geo
science museum. The museum was established by Sir Donald Mac Qillivray on 30th of May 1957.
We saw many interesting things like marble, limestone, plant & animal fossils as well as sedimentary, igneous
and metamorphic rocks. We also saw a lot of geophysical equipment likes binoculars, microscope and gravity
meter. At the end of the day, many students bought gemstones from the museum. It was a indeed a fun, enjoyable
& educational trip for us.

Year 8’s Taiping Trip
“The trip to Taiping on
23rd
June was great. In
the morning we walked
up to the 2nd
station of
Bukit Larut (Maxwell
Hill), and the morning
hike was inspirational,
mind-building, and
challenging. After that
we went to the war
cemetery. There were
many soldiers from
Malaysia, India, and
the UK who died near
there during the 2nd
World War defending
Malaya against the Japanese. After that we had a local lunch at a hawker stall. Last but not
least, we went to the Perak State Museum, which was full of Malaysian history, geography,
and culture. Even though we were tired at the end of the day, we had a happy time and expe-
rience.” Isaac David (Year 8 Green)
Excel Week: Music
In today’s music industry, digital music skills are an essential part of any musician’s skill set. Using a digital keyboard and appropriate music computer software, it’s possible to create and record your own jingles, ring-tones, backing tracks, film scores and so on, as well as print the music to publishing house standards. During Excel Week students from Years 7 and 8 spent a morning exploring the Apple music software programme ‘GarageBand’ using the 6 music computer work stations in Music Room 1. GarageBand is very simple to operate
once you know the basics and it wasn’t very long before the students were happily composing away. Their first project was to make an individual arrangement of a popular genre such as Reggae or Latin already installed in the programme using Magic GarageBand. This allows students to alter many aspects of the music to come up with their own individual version of it. This was a good prep-aration for the second project in which they were free to create any style of music they desired. All the resulting compositions were saved and pub-lished on iTunes.
