Dear Parents Take aways that may be good for you… These past weeks, I have been privileged to participate in a num-ber of conferences, workshops, functions and talks, both as speaker, audience and delegate. Leaving a full day of interesting presentations can see me saturated, and its always the “take aways” that stand out most: those bytes of information that resonate, reinforce, ruffle or register. I share five of my “take aways” with you, hoping that each might either challenge, support or interest you as parents. You can use or lose as you need to.
On high expectations and belief in the potential of every child: Duncan Agar: Bellavista representative on the Johannesburg Mini Council at his inauguration as Deputy Mayor of the Council for 2017: [referring to his teachers and parents:] “… they believed in me and that’s why you see this person in front of you.” On ways to maintain, develop and protect the brain: Dr Kathie Nunley: Educational and Counselling Psychologist Screen time under the age of two is damaging to the reticular activiting system, which is not yet matured;
attentiona issues later in childhood are linked to early screen time. All brain maintenance happens when we sleep- we should be waking naturally (without a alarm) if we are getting
the sleep our brain needs to hardwire information into our long term memory. The number one predictor of school success is the richness of vocabulary by age three. Are we talking to our
children, mediating their world around them with language? Don’t just work on a child’s weakness; rather, develop the strength to a point where it dominates the weaker areas of function. Our diet should be rich with Omega 3, low in sugar, packed with flavanoides found in plants (9-15 a day) and
inclusive of natural fats like coconut oil. Without these nutritional supports, we can’t have a healthy brain. Prof Venter: Developmental Paediatrican In school going age children, screen time should, for example, be limited to one hour a day in the week, three hours
on a Saturday and two hours on a Sunday. No screen time at all for 1,5 hours before sleep.
Dr Annemarie Lombard: Occupational Therapist Keep calm and move your body; Know your sensory profile as a parent as well as you know your child’s so that you can function together. On hope for our future in South Africa: Mark Heywood – Executive Director Section27 See the future with the lens of power and possibility rather than paralysis;
Our constitution gives us enormous power but citizens are not using it;
Schools are communities – places of power in realising the constitutional vision;
Education is a gateway right;
Education is tied to HOPE.
Barney Pityana - Human Rights Lawyer and Theologian
Think of being human as a duty. It is never complete – there is always more to be done; to care, to love, to know joy
and pain, to value life in all its fullness.
We cannot become human by ourselves. We become human through others because we owe our humanity to
others.
Being human is about the relationships that are necessary to discover more about one another than you would
otherwise do.
Sawubona means “I recognise you” or “I see you”. It says, “ You impact on me and I cannot do without you.”
Enjoy the last few weeks of the term, Alison Scott Principal

Dear Bellavista School
Thank you so much for your donation and continuous support to Hotel Hope Ministries.
Words alone truly cannot express enough our gratitude to you.
You might be wondering how do you help us? Well let me share with you this true story
…..
Our recent intake took place @ 1:20am in the morning, with a phone call from a CBD
based police station where a mother and father were taken into custody for severe child
abuse.
They needed urgent care for siblings ages 3 months & 2 years old. We immediately
sprang into action and within 15 minutes had a cot and baby basinet ready for our new
arrivals.
The house was quite when they arrived, but the aunties awaiting their entrance welcomed them with open arms, to share with them tender
love & care.
It is only due to YOUR generosity & support that we are able to do this, and since inception in 2011 this has been our 85th & 86th arrival at
our children’s home.
These kids are doing better now, they are stable & adjusting very well to their new environment ….. To God Be the Glory !!
We often we say we love what we do but it would not be possible without people like you
On behalf of all our children & staff we say – THANK YOU, AGAIN !
Oliver, team, kids and mums
