Free Invite to Ted’s Last Sausage Sizzle for 2018

This Sunday, 25th November at 10.00am, Kalinda Primary School Families are invited to participate in our last Working Bee for this year! There will be a working bee between 10am and 12noon this Sunday, and Ted and the Facilities Committee would love to see Kalinda Families come along. All tools etc. are provided and we are simply seeking the donation of some labour. Tasks that get done at Working bees include raking over the soft fall playgrounds, spreading mulch, clearing the basketball courts, tidying up the gardens, all the fun home maintenance stuff, on a larger scale. At the end of the Working Bee, Ted will cook his regular sausage sizzle and there will be soft drink available for kids as well as other adult type refreshments. For those unfamiliar with the location of Ted’s Office, ask one of your kids to take you there and show you. For those who cannot convince their kids to come along, it is outside the Art Room on the car park side of the main building. Kids are most welcome and it's a nice way to get them interested in looking after the school. If you bring them to enough working bees, over time, they will be able to clean gutters, mow grass, rake leaves, paint walls, sweep rubbish, and you can spend your weekends watching them work from the couch. All welcome - if you are able to come along, it will be much appreciated and will help keep the school looking good. Thanks from Ted and School Council Facilities. Hope to see you there.

Canteen News ICE CREAM DAY – Due date for orders is Wednesday 28th November. No late orders can be accepted. All items are EGG-FREE. Please remember to mark whether you would like one scoop or two. For those students who are visiting the Aged Care Homes that day, you do have the option of having it held until your return to school. We need plenty of helpers on the day – please let me know if you can help out. NEW MENU – The new menu is available on our website under “Canteen” and “Notices & Forms”. Spare copies are available at the office. Please dispose of your old menu. The new online menu shows the “Healthy Traffic Light” system, with some areas in green, some in orange and some in red. The green writing shows foods that are healthy and can be eaten at any time. The items in orange means that it’s quite okay to have them sometimes, and the items in red are those that should only be eaten as a very special treat. You can use this as a guide for your child’s choices. FUTURE DATES: 4th December - Special Food Day – Ice Cream Day 14th December - Last day for lunch orders for 2018.

Helpers Needed If you are able to help at any time in the canteen, it would be very much appreciated. Please contact me in the canteen or leave your name at the office. We are short of volunteers and children love to see their mums, dads, or other family members helping out. JUSTINE WATSON CANTEEN MANAGER

Kalinda Wellbeing - Mindfulness for Children

As you are probably aware, at Kalinda we consistently incorporate mindfulness into our daily program. We have certainly seen the benefits of using mindfulness, both within the classroom and the playground. The children are certainly more calm, focused and able to deal with conflict as a result of adopting mindful strategies.

As we have had many queries from parents regarding mindful activities that could be utilised at home, we thought that we would compile a list of suggested activities for you and your child to possible try at home;

- Mindful Colouring- This is certainly a favourite activity among many children. Mindful colouring pages

are included in your child’s diary. Alternatively, there are many mindful colouring sheets in a range of themes available on the internet, or colouring books can be purchased from your local bookstore. Encourage your child to keep their focus solely on the mindful colouring sheet, taking notice of the lines, patterns, colours and shapes.

- Guided Meditations- There are a range of child-friendly meditation sequences available on YouTube and through apps. Some appropriate meditations include sequences from ‘Cosmic Kids Yoga’ and ‘New Horizon’.

- Breathing Meditations- Another meditation strategy is to have your child sit, or lie down, in a quiet space and play calming music. You can ask your child to focus on their stomach rising and falling as they breathe and notice where else in their body they feel the sensation of breathing.

- Developing Gratitude- Encourage your child to practice gratitude journaling at a regular time each day, perhaps first thing in the morning or just before the end of the day. Instruct them to take five minutes to think of something that they feel grateful for today. Here are some topics or ideas you can use to guide your children;

– Something that someone else did for you that day. – A person in your life that you appreciate. – An activity or hobby you are grateful to be able to do. – A positive quality of someone that can sometimes be hard to get along with. – A skill or ability you have. – A part of your body you are grateful for and why. – An item that you love. – Something that made you laugh. – What you have learnt from something that was hard.

- Outdoor Activities- There are many great outdoor mindful activities you could encourage your children to try, such as observing the clouds, making a mindful mandala out of things they can find on the ground like sticks, rocks and bark, or a nature sketch where they have to observe something like a leaf or piece of bark in great detail and sketch it.

Ella’s Japanese Experience…………. The first thing I noticed with my host family was that they had a TV in their car, so every morning, on the way to the bus stop, we watched TV. In the bus, they had bus monitors that pointed to where you were meant to sit. They told you when you were meant to get off.

At school we did a lot of English and Science. In science we made an alcohol lamp and we told the Science teacher and the class what the body parts were called in English. In English we played a lot of word games. It was nearly Halloween then so we mostly did words like ‘October’ and ’Witch’.

My host family had a kind of small but kind of big house. It was a two story house with three bedrooms. I slept in the little girl?s bedroom. It was very pink and I slept in a bunk bed except there was no bed on the bottom. On the table at breakfast they had apple, cake, rice balls and these little drinks that tasted like a melted spider (drink). But one morning we had Yaki Soba which were noodles. It's very hard to explain the taste but it had cabbage in it and it was really yummy.

On Saturday we went to Hitachi Seaside Park. It had so many beautiful flowers and fun rides. They had these red bushes that only stayed red for two weeks until it changed to a different shade. On Sunday we went to the Hawaiians Spa Resort. There were so many epic water slides, I can?t decide which one?s my favourite. They also had the longest water slide which in Japan which was 283m!

One of my favourite places was the Origami Kaikan where we did an origami class. We made some autumn animals like foxes, we made summer insects like grasshoppers, we made winter birds like penguins and we made spring things like fish. At the shop there was really big origami paper and really small origami paper. They

had a big display with things made of origami. They even had an origami clock!

Grade 1/2 students have celebrated “shichi 7 go 5 san 3”. “Shichi go san” is an event in November to celebrate the growth of 7 years girls, 5 years boys and 3 years girls and boys. If you were in Japan now, you would see the children in kimono with Chitose ame, long life lollies. Noriko sensei helped the children wear kimono on and wore her own kimono. Unfortunately, Noriko sensei had to fly back to Japan due to her mother’s very ill health on Sunday. Great appreciation goes to Kai’s (1/2 F) family who hosted her at the time and helped her out in the emergent situation. Also, we would like to thank Abi’s family (1/2 E) who was the first host family and welcomed her so warmly. We would like to say thank you and sorry to Eloise (FA), and Tegwen (3/4 L) and Elwyn’s (5/6D) families who were going to host Noriko sensei later in the year. Our thoughts are with Noriko sensei and her family. Cheryl and Hiromi

Burnt Bridge Tennis Program Last week the Foundation students and Grade 1/2 students participated in a Tennis Program run by Burnt Bridge Tennis Club. The students appeared to have a lot of fun as they participated in a number of different activities and games while continually practicing the fundamental motor skills involved in tennis. If your child really enjoyed this tennis experience and is wanting to play tennis outside of school, please note that pamphlets will be distributed towards the end of year with details about who your child can be involved in tennis. Thank you to Burnt Bridge Tennis Club for running this program with our students here at Kalinda Primary School.

Grade 5/6 Cricket T20 Schools Cup Blast Selected Grade 5/6 students participated in the cricket T20 School Cup Blast on Friday the 16 th of November. Lots of cricket was played, all teams played 4 games in total. All students had a lot of fun playing cricket but also dressing up (coloured zinc and braids) and dancing and singing along to the music that was played across the day. The Kalinda cricket teams performed really well. Congratulations to the All Stars Boys and Girls teams who have progressed to the Outer East School Cup Region Finals. Thank you to Scott, Lochie, Dee, Craig and Dale for coaching a team on the day. Thank you to Warranwood Sharks Cricket Club, who have supported us throughout both the Grade 3/4 and 5/6 Cricket T20 School Cup Blast, running lunchtime training sessions, assisting with coaching, umpiring and scoring on game day. Your support is very much appreciated and we are very grateful for the relationship we have between our school and your sporting club. JESSICA SWINGLER PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER
