La Siesta Evangelical Church
The following letter from Pastor Keith Brown has been received by the Elders.
To the Church Secretary and Elders.
This is my written confirmation of my intention to retire at the end of April 2019 as
given orally at the Elders meeting on Friday 21st September 2018.
If is agreeable by yourselves I would like to officiate at the Holy Communion service
on Sunday 28th April 2019 as this would be my last service as your Pastor here at
La Siesta Evangelical Church.
If it is again agreeable I would still be available to help out and take occasional
services on Sundays as well as Funerals and Weddings services if requested by the
families with a financial contribution being returned to the church.
I will have been here with you since 2011 originally agreeing to stay for five years.
As on this date in 2019 I will have reached the age of 72 and I feel some free time
will be welcome for as long as our Lord allows me to stay with you on this earth.
I have enjoyed my time with you as your ordained Pastor, with one or two
exceptions, a position I would never have dreamed of in my previous life, and I
would like to thank the Elders for their support during this time together with the
Church secretaries who have supported me namely our beloved late Sister Fiona
Cook, Amanda, Margaret and Sue Stacey. Also my thanks go to Jeanie Cooper who
joined our ministerial team recently. It is not one person who runs this church with
our Lords help but a friendly, dedicated team who put themselves out and who
encourage each other to ensure the church runs like a well-oiled clock.
Thank you all very much for what will be eight years of serving our Lord and
Saviour here at La Siesta especially my wife Kathy who has had to put up with me
being out for long periods, sometimes for seven days and more without a day off
and with me not being able to confide in her with the tasks and counselling I have
under taken.
Thank you all so much and may God Bless your future life in this church here in
Spain.
Pastor Keith Brown

MOZAMBIQUE
At the time of writing Tracey is on sabbatical during which time she will be undertaking
courses in Switzerland and Croatia. Here is her first report.
Subject: Sabbatical News
Date: 15 September 2018 at 21:49:45 BST - written late on Saturday evening
SOOOOOO...……
SEPTEMBER …. was the
START ………. of my
SABBATICAL ……..
SO off I headed to
SWITZERLAND ……. land of
SUNSHINE, SHOWERS, SNOW and SKIS
(Well, I didn't experience the latter two!)
SERIOUSLY though, I did have an amazing 10 days sharing with new people, making new friends and searching and studying God's Word on a wonderful Oak Hall Expeditions Alpine Bible Week.
Glorious mountain views, shared here with a
new friend who has considerable experience in Africa, and a heart for caring for missionaries!

In the morning and evening we walked our way through the book of Ephesians , and in the afternoons explored the local mountains (when you could see them!!). There were cable cars and chair lifts, gondolas (of the ski version) and boats on the lake - stunning scenery and plenty of time to rest and reflect.
I came away with a very real sense that God was about His business of restoring a very weary soul and at the same time speaking a lot to me about perspective and vision and seeing!
On our first day the mountain back drop was glorious - picture postcard in fact - but by Day 2 you would have been hard pressed to know there were mountains out there!!
And God quietly said to me "It seems like everything has changed - but everything really is exactly the same". Some practical parallels for me!
And the summary of Ephesians - "Make it (life) Count".
I have enjoyed a week in my "home" town of Reading, visiting friends, drinking tea and coffee - and snapping up some sales bargains for the children!
Tomorrow I head to Croatia for a 2 week "time out" entitled "Ministering to those who Minister".
I can't begin to say thank you enough to ALL the folks, individuals, churches who have made this sabbatical possible - financially and in your prayers.
So far, so VERY good!
4AM alarm call tomorrow so it's a goodnight to all.
Blessings,
Tracey

ELSIE INGLIS
A long time ago — I can scarcely
remember the details — I was born in
the Elsie Inglis Memorial Maternity
Hospital in the Abbeyhill district of
Edinburgh.
Elsie Maude Inglis (16th August 1864 -
26th November 1917) was an innovative
Scottish doctor, suffragist and founder of
the Scottish Women’s Hospitals.
Elsie Inglis was born in Naini Tal, India, to
Harriet Thompson and John Forbes David
Inglis, a magistrate, who worked in the
Indian Civil Service.
Unlike many other parents at the time,
Inglis parents were enlightened and
considered that the education of a
daughter was as important as that of a
son. After a private education in
Edinburgh and Paris, Inglis decided to
study medicine and in 1887 she began
her studies at the Edinburgh School of
Medicine for Women. Later she
completed her training at the Glasgow
Royal Infirmary and in 1892 she qualified
at the Royal College of Physicians of
Edinburgh and the Royal College of
Surgeons of Edinburgh.
She worked for a time at Elizabeth
Garrett Anderson’s pioneering New
Hospital for Women in London and later
at a leading maternity hospital in Dublin.
In 1894 she returned to Edinburgh and
opened a maternity hospital, named the
Hospice, for poor women.
This was the forerunner of the Elsie Inglis
Maternity Hospital.
Inglis often waived the fees owed to her
and would pay for her patients to
recuperate by the sea-side.
Her dissatisfaction with the standard of
medical care open to women led her to
political activism through the Suffrage
Movement.
Inglis, though, was a suffragist (a believer
in the right of women to vote by
campaigning peacefully) and not a
suffragette like the Pankhursts.
Despite all her previous achievements it
was Elsie Inglis’ efforts during the First
World War which brought her to fame
when she approached the Royal Army
Medical Corps to offer them a ready-
made medical unit staffed by women, the
British War Office told her “go home and
sit still”.
Instead the French Government took up
her offer and established her unit in
Serbia.
Elsie Inglis had originally offered a 100
bed hospital but eventually it had 600
beds as it dealt with casualties from the

Somme and other battles.
Inglis worked tirelessly to improve
hygiene reducing typhus and other
epidemics.
In 1915 she was captured and repatriated
immediately. Elsie Inglis began organising
funds for a Scottish Women’s Hospital
team which she headed in Odessa, Russia.
However, in 1917, suffering from cancer,
Elsie inglis was forced to return to Britain
where she died on 26th. November 1917
in Newcastle.
Her funeral in St.Giles Cathedral in
Edinburgh was attended by British and
Serbian royalty.
Elsie Inglis is buried in Dean Cemetery in
Edinburgh, close to the graves of her
parents.
The Serbs never forgot what Elsie Inglis
did for their country awarding her various
decorations and erecting a memorial
fountain in her memory in Mladenovac.
In 2015 the British Residence in Belgrade
was re-named Elsie Inglis House.
Elsie Inglis was one of a small group of
female doctors who had to overcome so
many obstacles and so much prejudice in
a male-dominated world of medicine.

La Siesta Evangelical Church is an ecumenical English speaking congregation drawn from
Baptists, Methodists, United Reform, Church of Scotland, Presbyterian Church in Ireland
and several other denominations. We belong to the Iglesia Evangélica Española or Spanish
Evangelical Church, a Presbyterian Church in which we are part of the Presbytery of
Levante.
Our Membership Secretary is Helen Tudor and you should contact her or any other Elder at
any service if you are interested in joining our Church. Helen´s telephone number appears
in the Elders section on this page.
If you are a visitor we cordially invite you to sign the visitors' book at the front door. We do
have many visitors especially in the holiday months and it is very easy for "new faces" to be
missed. You will notice that the Elders and members of the Fellowship Committee are
identified by badges and we urge you to attend the refreshments after the service and to
introduce yourselves. We are really interested in meeting visitors to our services.
