As the last quarter of the year is upon us and moving forward at a fast pace; staff, pupils and parents find themselves inundated with heavy workloads, assessments, exams, deadlines and other external pressures. It is at times like these, that we see just how big a role ones mindset plays. According to Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, your mindset plays a significant role in deter-mining achievement and success. Your mindset is your collection of thoughts and beliefs that shape your thought habits. And your thought habits affect how you think, what you feel, and what you do. Your mindset plays a pivitol role in how you cope with life's challenges. A positive, “growth” mindset can contribute to greater accomplishment and increased effort. When facing problems, stressful workloads and assessment pressures, people with growth mindsets show greater re-silience. They are more likely to persevere in the face of setbacks, to tackle challenges head on, and grow as a person. Growth mindsets also result in a hunger for learning and a desire to work hard and discover exciting, new things. Children who are taught to explore, embrace new experiences, and take challenges in their stride, are more likely to develop a positive, growth mindset. Let us try to remember ourselves, and encourage our children to adopt the motto, “We Can!” We Can: * Study effectively and write the exams to the best of our abilities. * Set effective schedules and meet all of our deadlines. * Get through the stressful November period, as able, successful, resilient individuals.

Important Dates
The Eagle Award scroll is one of the highest accolades that Newton House bestows upon their pupils. The Eagle Award embodies the commitment and dedication that we wish to inculcate in all our pupils. In turn, the Eagle Award scroll is awarded to any pupil who receives four consecutive Eagle Awards. As such, it is a true testa-ment to their loyalty and participation over an extended period. The scroll is displayed permanently on the blazer and a child may be awarded a new scroll for every set of four con-secutive Eagle Awards they achieve. It is with great pleasure that we award Eagle Award scrolls to the following pupils: Daniel Woollatt Savir Kana Rylie Jakins Kimberley Greenwood Lia Cunningham Angus Shave (absent)

Eagle awards are awarded to children who have attended 100% of practices and matches, have always worn the cor-rect uniform and have returned 100% of their letters on time. Therefore, this Award holds great significance and can be worn with pride. It signifies the attitude, commitment and character towards which Newton House children strive. The award consists of a badge which is worn on the left hand lapel of the school blazer. The badge can be worn for the full term following the term for which the award is granted. Children must hand their badges back at the end of the fourth term. Congratulations to the following children for achieving their Eagle Award for Term Three of 2019.

Wednesday was ‘International Restart a Heart Day’ . We have used the opportunity to promote awareness and to train all our Grade 6 and 7’s in basic CPR methods, including the use of the automated external defibrillator machine. All citizens of the world can save a life with immediate action!

This cycle the Grade 6's are learning about the European Explorers. One of our pupils Katherine in 6C so kindly
brought a tapestry image of the Last Supper, one of Leonardo Da Vinci's famous paintings.
The Grade 6’s enjoyed learning about foreign currency and international trade in Social Sciences. What a special
treat when a parent travels and brings back a note from Nigeria for each child.
Grade 5 Outing
The Grade Fives enjoyed a wonderful day out at Gold Reef City on Wednesday 16th October. They were treated to an interactive presentation on the origins of Johannesburg and Egoli, the City of Gold. Then the children and teachers bravely donned hard hats and descended to a depth of 75 meters, to see for themselves how a mine works. When they re-emerged, the group watched in awe as gold was smelted in a furnace, before being poured into a mould. After that, 45 hungry children and 4 teachers spent time at the food court before travelling around Gold Reef City by train, before heading for home.

We are hoping to wrap up our raffle for the Lion Sand’s Game Reserve before the start of exams. Tickets are avail-able for R50 from the school office. The class who sells the most raffle tickets will be given Spur vouchers and
taken for lunch during school time. In our children’s eyes, this is the ultimate prize!
Children can bring a list of names along with their money to the school office. The secretaries will assist them to write the names of those who have purchased onto the raffle sheets. This sheet will then be signed by the office and the tickets will be allocated to that classes tally. The class with the most tickets when the draw is done will be
declared the winners.
Next week Wednesday our matrics will start writing in the school hall. We request that parents do not wait for their
children in the top parking lot but rather wait outside or in the bottom parking lot to keep noise to a minimum.
Good luck to the dancers who are doing their modern and hip hop exams tomorrow.
The Junior Primary had a wonderful time taking part in the Eisteddfod this year. They worked hard and their dedi-cation was well rewarded, they each achieved no less than a gold certificate. Caitlyn Lander, Owen Welthagen, Este Steenkamp, Tristan Mouton, Tay Alexander and Joshua Bewsher showcased their amazing talents by recit-ing poems or by doing a prepared reading piece. Owen Welthagen also competed outside of the school and rep-resented Newton House proudly, he was awarded eight certificates for the various categories he participated in. We are incredibly proud of our Grade twos and threes and they are most definitely little super starts in the
making.

Yesterday, 17 October, the U/9 boys played their first cricket match of the season against Delta Park School. The host chose to bat first with Joshua Slabbert and Anesu Mphafudi sent as our opening bowlers. Newton House then faced the ball where they displayed exceptional batting skills. Their excitement was noticeable and they played to the best of their abilities. Unfortunately, we lost the match, however the players were not discouraged with the end results. The experience the play-ers get from the matches will improve their skill and confidence, and prepare them for future matches. We are proud of all our players and we are looking forward to our next game.
