2SN News
This term 2SN have continued working on their very own Mr Men and Little Miss stories and have enjoyed becoming authors and illustrators. They started by creating a brand new character and then started to write their stories from scratch. By next term each child will have their very own book to take home.
In class they have also enjoyed practicing their pointillism skills by completing self portraits to display in the Face of Britain project. First the children traced a close up photograph of themselves and then filled in each
different section with a range of patterns. The children are all very proud of their work and are looking forward to seeing them online.
Year 1 at the Norman Lockyer Observatory
On Friday 9th March Year 1 had the opportunity to go to the Norman Lockyer Observatory in Sidmouth as part of their
‘Space’ topic. The day began with an interesting introductory talk led by the volunteers at the Observatory, which also
enabled the children to demonstrate what they already knew about Space. They were then split into groups and given a
tour of the Observatory and saw the three working
telescopes. The highlight of the day was the Plane-
tarium show in the James Lockyer Planetarium.
The children had the exciting experience of
learning about the night sky and saw some of the
main star constellations. It was a fantastic and
memorable trip for the children and increased their
enthusiasm for the topic.

Spring Term 2012
1CWD News
On Tuesday 6th March Class 1CWD went to Martinsfield farm to look for signs of spring. The children enjoyed the walk to the farm in the beautiful sunshine and were very quick to start spotting the signs of spring, such as lambs, calves, spring flowers and budding trees. Once at the farm, children got to spend time with lots of the lambs, learnt about the markings on them and some even had the opportunity to feed them. They also got to watch some sheep be-ing sheared and met lots of other wildlife on the farm. It was an en-joyable experience for all and showed the children that spring is definitely here.

IMC Update
On Friday 2nd March Class 1MC had the opportunity to watch a screening of The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child, at an event held by Filmclub at the Pheonix in Exeter. The children all dressed as a character from a story book and went to the Pheonix to watch the films and take part in a number of activities linked to The Gruffalo. It was a fantastic and memorable trip for the class at an event based on one of their best known and loved stories.
The children have been truly inspired by this terms topic about Space. They were able to visit the Norman Lockyer Observatory in Sidmouth where they saw a range of amazing telescopes and got to see the night sky whilst in the planetarium. It was a magical experience!
4SG News
This half of
the term the
children
have been
looking at
healthy diets
and how
they benefit
our bodies. They have looked at what the
government says is a ‘healthy diet’ and
then compared it to one week of their
own. Using these results the class are
planning meals that could help make
their diets even healthier! Vegetable
seeds are also being planted by the class
ready to be relocated over to 4SG’s
allotment space, so fingers crossed they
will be ready to eat soon! The children
have also been creating some Pop Art
portraits, based on paintings by Roy
Lichtenstein, which are now displayed in
the classroom.

Foundation Update
This term
Foundation have
found out even more
about life under the
sea. They have been sewing beautiful fish pillows and decorating them
with scales. The children are looking forward to taking them home and
showing them off to their family. The children have started to work on a
BTV programme using their knowledge about under the sea. They are
making animations and re-enacting a sea rescue!
Recently, the school nurse visited their classes
and taught the children about the importance of
washing their hands. They used a special
machine and glittery cream to show up areas on
their hands that they had missed.
The children have also started to learn about money and the value of
coins up to £2.00. They have been buying and selling things in the
classroom shop and have been working out which coins to use. During
the Summer Term they will continue to find out about life in the
rainforest and begin to look at countries around the world in the run up
to the Olympics.
Science at Clyst Vale
Year 6 were invited to
Clyst Vale this term to
experience science in a
‘real’ science lab. The
children very much
enjoyed learning how to
use the scientific equip-
ment, including bunsen
burners, in order to distil
orange oil from orange peel. All the children worked well in
groups and were successful in producing a vial of oil ready for
use in an oil burner at home.
Mrs Kelly Knight from Clyst Vale
science department supervised the
transition event, which is
organised so that the children start
to get a flavour of life at secondary
school, ensuring that their next big
step in life is as comfortable and
smooth as possible.
5VH News
5VH have been thinking about the environment this term. They were keen to get the allotment organised for the planting season and
eager to learn about saving water. After discussing ideas in class, they decided to write formal letters to local garden centres and water companies to ask for some help and advice on getting started. They had an amazing response. Kind replies and packs of seeds from Otter Nurseries, a visit from Claire at Mole Valley Farmers who donated a mini polytunnel, 20 watering cans and packs of seeds, and two wheelbarrows donated from B & Q. Southwest water were equally as generous giving the children everything they need to get going on reducing the amount of water they use in school. However, now the work really begins!
Broadclyst Football Team
The Year 5 and 6 football team have had a busy year so far, playing home and
away matches against several local teams as part of the East Devon football
league. The team has won all of the games played with some impressive
results. They are currently top of the league and due to play their final match
after Easter.
Working with-
Killerton
As a school we have
close links with the
National Trust and
Killerton House.
Throughout this
term children across
Year 5 have been
working closely with
the staff at Killerton
on several projects. On the 14th and 15th June, they will be
running a living history day at the house, recreating the
events of the 17th September 1926, when the former Prime
Minister, David Lloyd George, gave a speech on land
reform. The children are currently busy getting into role
and scripting their scenes, as well as learning more about
Lloyd George’s ideas. They are very enthusiastic about this
project and the final performance will definitely be worth
watching!
Recently, 5MP have begun a second project with the Trust,
designing publicity materials for the newly opened cycle
track from Clyston Mill to Killerton House. They are
creating advertising leaflets and will also be filming and
producing a promotional video. The class has discussed the
importance of an active lifestyle and how taking part in a
sport such as cycling can help with this. A group of Year 5
children were also invited to the official opening of the new
track, cycling the course with its designers and various
members of the local Council. They all thoroughly enjoyed
the ride and were keen to visit the course again with their
families and friends.

2ACM Update
During World Book Day, class 2ACM visited the
Royal Albert Memorial Museum as part of their
Ancient Egypt topic. They enjoyed listening to Tom
Cadbury, a curator talking about a range of Egyptian
artefacts and they had plenty of opportunity to explore
the museum. They found an Egyptian tapestry
showing what life was like along the River Nile and a
sacred Egyptian goose as well as the tomb of an
Egyptian woman. It was a really interesting day! Lots
of the children chose to dress up as Ancient Egyptians
for the day, and many wore the Pharaoh crowns that
they had been busy making in class.
The children have really enjoyed taking part in the
Face of Britain project. This national project
encourages children to create a self-portrait which
then can be uploaded
into an online gallery.
Class 2ACM learnt all
about the style of pop
art and created some
fantastic portraits in
this style.
Future Authors
Inspired by the visit from
the author Simon James on
World Book Day class 3CF
have planned and created
their own versions of the
fantastic ‘Baby Brains’
stories. The children
worked hard on
successfully introducing
characters, using dialogue in writing and describing events and
viewpoints. The children were able to use their stories and create
their very own story book in the style of Simon James, with a front
cover, title page and blurb. The children were very careful with
their illustrations and presentation. They are now creating their own
audio-storybook to accompany their story and are practising reading
aloud by presenting them to groups of children from year 1 and
asking for feedback in the form of a questionnaire.
Allotment
Update
The allotment
is now ready
for planting!
With help
from some
kind parent
helpers, the raised beds have mainly been filled
and the earth turned ready for seeds. The
composter is now working well and the
greenhouse is on the way. Equipment is being
gathered and planting plans discussed. Classes
are now excitedly planning what they can grow
as the weather shows clear signs of spring.
Thanks to everyone who came and helped for
the Gardening day, it was greatly appreciated.
3CF—Materials
Class 3CF have been
looking at materials, and the
creation of materials and
their properties. In the run
up to Mother’s Day the
children were excited to
work with Kate Ferdinand
to create their own felt,
using a variety of red,
orange and purple wool. The children separated the
fibres and layered the wool, in a criss-cross fashion,
using different colours. They used silk fibres to
create contrast and used wool fibres to keep these in
place. The children bound the fibres using water
and soap and rubbed it over bubble wrap. Each
piece of felt was different and individual and the
children were really pleased with the results. They
later used a gold thread to decorate their felt and
used it on their Mother’s Day cards.

4CG News
The children have recently been investigating circuits. They
have been discussing what components circuits consist of and
are investigating whether materials are conductors or
insulators. The children have looked into the uses of
electricity and some of the dangers associated with it.
In P.E. 4CG are developing circus skills. They are building on
skills such as rolling, balancing and jumping, whilst trialling
other circus based skills such as juggling, hula hooping and
plate spinning. After Easter they will put some of these skills
together to form sequences to create a routine to some of the
music from Barnum. Barnum is a musical, which is based on
the life of showman P. T. Barnum. It covers the period from
1835 through to 1880 in America and major cities of the
world where Barnum took his performing companies.
3CWH at the Fleet Air Museum
This term class 3CWH have enjoyed learning about World War 2. On Thursday 23rd March they went to the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton
on a very exciting school trip. They all dressed up in war time clothes and imagined they were evacuees. When they first arrived they met their new teacher for the day, Tim. He took them into the 1940’s classroom where they were told that the country was about to go to war! He gave them all their new ID cards and showed them how to fill them in. It was very important that they kept them with them at all times. He also taught them all about the air raid siren and rationing. They had the opportunity to weigh Miss White’s food out for the week – it wasn’t very much! In the afternoon they had a tour of the museum and carrier experience which included a ride on the helicopter!
Lunchtime Activities
All year groups from Foundation to Year 6 are
enjoying the different lunch time activities with Mrs
Knight and Mr Bowles. The activities vary from
skipping, playing with hoops to trying circus tricks,
like spinning plates!
World Book Day
Everyone at Broadclyst celebrated World Book Day
in tremendous style by dressing up as their favourite
book characters. There were characters from Harry
Potter, Where’s Wally and Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory. The school were very lucky to be visited by
the author Simon James and learnt all about becoming
an author. In classrooms throughout the school there
were a variety of activities linked with reading and
writing and the whole day was a huge success.
