The students worked in pairs and were assigned one of the eleven topics; Where it all began.... the big Bang, Galaxies - the home of stars, Stars - giant nuclear reactors in space, Our solar system - our home in space, The inner planets: Mercury, Venus and Earth, The outer planets, gas giants: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Rhythms of the Earth - tides and seasons, Space, Atmosphere and a Planet’s Climate, Exploring Space - Telescopes, Life in the Universe - is there anybody else out there and History and Future of Space Travel. The presentations on the student’s Weebly pages have produced some great results. We are curating a “virtual exhibition” in the library, linking to the students weebly presentations of their space topic. In English some of our students have been expressing their ideas about what they have learned about characters they have been reading about “I like how even under the dire circumstances he is in, he (Simon) doesn’t give up and most of the time is optimistic. He shows people how to deal with their problems positively. I also enjoyed seeming how much he changed other people like Nathan and his friends at school. He showed everyone how to deal with major problems in life.” Esther Colman 9 BOK Yrs. 7-10MBAS Minecraft Club On the 10th June 2015 a group of students from the MBAS Minecraft Club made a scale model of the HMS Buffalo. We had to work as a team to build this model and find all the resources to construct it. We delegated jobs to each other and worked together, jobs involved getting sheep and shearing them for wool (to make the sails of the ship). We had some maths involved to work out how big we will need to make it as the original dimensions were in feet.We learnt what the HMS Buffalo looked like and how big it was. It was hard to work out what we needed to do next because everyone was working at different stages. By The Minecraft Club.

On Thursday the 4th of June, 90 children from MBAS went to a farm owned by Dirk Sieling by the bike park at Moewai. The children were there to experience a day in the life of a soldier.

They did six activities. There was first aid where they had to do a war scene skit and make a stretcher. They also had to make a periscope which the children coloured and camouflaged using bamboo branches. They also made damper, made a fire and cooked the damper on sticks. Another activity was digging a trench which was very deep. There was an obstacle course which made the children very muddy. The last activity was where the children had to blindfold a friend and the person that was blind folded held a rope and walked the course while people were trying to shoot at them using Nerf guns.

At the end of the day, everyone was extremely muddy and tired. MBAS teacher, Sonjia Campbell says “While the children had a fun day, they also got a first-hand taste of what it might have been like for an ANZAC soldier. All the students agreed that they wouldn’t have liked staying just one night in the trench, let alone months!”

As part of Thames Library’s 25th Anniversary celebrations, the District Libraries are looking for fresh new designs for the library cards.“The theme is ‘Love life, love my library’ and entries will be judged on creativity, design, printability and the message communicated,” says Linda Hayfield, Library Co-ordinator.Original artwork in three age categories is being sought and the winner in each category will receive a new Android tablet and there will be random spot prizes drawn for each category.“There is a catch, entrants must be a member of the Thames, Mercury Bay or Tairua Library,” says Ms Hayfield. “But it’s never too late to join, just come in to your local library or join online.”The competition closes on 30 June and finalists will be announced on 3 July. The public will then vote for the winners on the TCDC District Library’s Facebook page. All the competition details can be found on the Library’s page on our website or by calling in to your local library.
