Dear Parents, Students & Friends, This week we commence the liturgical season of Lent and acknowledge the call to reflect upon our faith, our relationship with our God and the commitment we have made to our children in walking with them on their own journey of faith. In doing so, it provides an opportunity to reflect upon why you have chosen a Catholic school for your child given that there are many schools to choose from. Resurrection has many of the bells and whistles that are so often considered the hall mark of a great school. But there is something even greater that for me makes it stand out, it is a school community that is connected through a belief in God and faith, working together to achieve amazing things for our students, families and Resurrection community. This connectedness to faith has a huge impact on the passion and commitment of all our school and parish staff. Teaching is not seen just as a job but more of a vocation in which we live out our faith through our work and our relationships with each other. It colours the very way we respond to the needs of our students and each other, with an open heart, a forgiving nature, an enthusiasm to achieve one’s best and to bring out the best in others, and the belief that God resides in each and every one of us; you, your child/ren, us, our families. Our difference is that we educate our children through the lens of faith and strive to bring out the giftedness of each and every child. Your support and partnership in this endeavour is paramount. Thank you for the support you have and continue to provide. • Dear Parents, Students & Friends,

This week we commence the liturgical season

of Lent and acknowledge the call to reflect

upon our faith, our relationship with our God

and the commitment we have made to our

children in walking with them on their own

journey of faith. In doing so, it provides an

opportunity to reflect upon why you have

chosen a Catholic school for your child given

Resurrection has many of the bells and whistles

that are so often considered the hall mark of a

  • Stop Making

    Excuses for Bad

    Behaviour

    Behaviour that hurts others or

    yourself is bad behaviour.

Behaviour that helps you or others

    without hurting others is good

    behaviour.

    Common excuses include:

o “She did not get enough sleep”.

    o “He is bored”.

o “She is gifted. She needs to be

    challenged more.”

    o “Boys will be boys.”

o “I do not know why he does

    that.”

o “Your child is bothering my child”

These excuses only enable a child to

    repeat bad behaviour without

    consequences.

A child usually exhibits a bad behaviour

    at an early age.

Parents who make excuses for their

child’s bad behaviour teach their child

to use those same excuses. As a result,

the child continues this bad behaviour,

    and parents accept it.

    However, teachers, friends, employers

and peers do not accept it. Sooner or

later, the child suffers hurt, regret and

    loneliness.

If you are a parent who makes excuses

every time your child misbehaves – stop

    it.

For the sake of your child, take action to

    change the bad behaviour.

Give your child positive skills to handle

    problems and emotions.

o Expect her to behave in a

    positive manner.

o State what you expect. “You can

stand in line without pushing or

    shoving.”

o Tell him what will happen if he

    misbehaves. Ask him to repeat

what you have said so you know

    he understands.

o Focus on one problem behaviour

at a time. Teach and practice

    skills to make positive change.

    Use consistent words and actions

as you help her use her new skills.

    o Choose a new problem

behaviour to work on after he

    masters each skill.

o Praise her when she shows good

    behaviour.

o Tell his teachers that you are

    working on positive behaviour

    changes.

o Model good behaviour. Do not

tell her to do or say something

    while you do the opposite.

For other tips on teaching positive

    behaviour skills, log onto

    www.parenthelpline.org and read the

    SkillTime and SchoolTime booklets.

  • SOCIAL JUSTICE TEAM

    2020

At Resurrection, we aim to be a positive, creative, hope-filled learning community where Catholic values and spirit are shared and the sacred dignity of each person is nurtured.

Our Social Justice team will be formed by 8-10 Year 6 students, voted in by their Year 6 peers and teachers. Two of these students will be chosen to lead the team, with teacher support.

    The purpose of our Social Justice team is to;

Help deepen our school’s understanding of Catholic Social Teaching

Promote thinking and actions that help to create a just community both local and global

Develop an awareness of social justice issues, seeing the needs of people in our community

Model our school motto ‘We care’,

    through words and actions

Catholic Social Teaching is based on the fundamental truth that each and every person – without exception – is made in the image and likeness of God.

There are six Catholic Social Teaching Principles. They are:

Solidarity Human Dignity Preferential Option for the Poor Community and the Common Good Rights and Responsibility Stewardship of the Earth’s Resources

These also link to our Gospel Values of showing compassion for those in need and working for a just and peaceful world.

The Social Justice Team will be working with the other school leadership groups within our school, parish teams and St Vincent de Paul Society to promote social justice, service and stewardship at Resurrection.

We hope you support us when we have fundraising or goods raising campaigns at school so that we can make a difference in the world! By building awareness we can TAKE ACTION! We are looking forward to working with the team and putting their ideas into action! Mrs Krajinovic & Ms Joy

    This Weekend’s

    Gospel Mt 4:1-11

A reading from the holy Gospel according to

    Matthew

Jesus fasted for forty days and nights.

Jesus was led by the Spirit out into the wilderness

to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty

days and forty nights, after which he was very

hungry, and the tempter came and said to him,

‘If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to

turn into loaves.’ But he replied, ‘Scripture says:

Man does not live on bread alone

but on every word that comes from the mouth

    of God.’

The devil then took him to the holy city and

made him stand on the parapet of the Temple.

‘If you are the Son of God,’ he said, ‘throw

    yourself down; for scripture says:

He will put you in his angels’ charge,

and they will support you on their hands

in case you hurt your foot against a stone.’

Jesus said to him, ‘Scripture also says:

You must not put the Lord your God to the test.’

Next, taking him to a very high mountain, the

devil showed him all the kingdoms of the world

and their splendour. ‘I will give you all these’, he

said, ‘if you fall at my feet and worship me.’

    https://liturgyhelp.com/ritual/lectionary/LectionaryList%7Cmtw#mtw004

  • Then Jesus replied, ‘Be off, Satan! For scripture

    says:

You must worship the Lord your God,

    and serve him alone.’

Then the devil left him, and angels appeared

    and looked after him.

Food For Thought…… Today’s Gospel is about knowledge. Satan

knows who Jesus is. His temptations are an

attempt to get Jesus to betray his humanity and

not endure the limitations of his daily life. Jesus

knows that the only way to be true to his divinity

is allow us to see it shine in and through his

human life. The rejection of the temptation to

compromise his frail human frame gives us the

hope that we, too, can glimpse the power of

God’s greatness in every moment we reject the

desire to be directors of our own destiny and to

see good triumph over evil in the choices we

    make.

It’s a relief to know we don’t have to be God!

May this Lent see us do what we are created

for: to use all our knowledge to praise,

reverence and serve the Loving One who willed

    us into being.

    PARENT HELPER

    TRAINING SESSION

Our Parent Helper training course for 2020

will be held on MONDAY 2nd MARCH 2020

This will be a morning session and will run for approximately one and a half hours from 9:00am till 10:00am in the Library.

**Please note: If you have already attended a Parent helper session you do not have to do it again.

We are keen to train as many parents as possible from all year levels as all classes would benefit from extra help and support.

We will also be discussing excursion protocols, as you MUST be a trained helper to be able to attend and assist with excursions and incursions.

Remember other interested family members are also welcome to do the training and assist in the classroom. We look forward to working with you.

Please be aware that you will require a current ‘Working with Children’ card and a ‘National Police Check’ in order to assist both at school and on excursions. Please provide a photocopy of this to the office for our records. These can both be obtained online and remember to tick the volunteer box for the “Working With Children’ check.

Please reply via email to let me know if you will be attending. Also, please feel free to contact me via email if you have any queries.

    Warm regards,

    Grant Lewis

Deputy Principal - Learning & Pedagogy

  • Incursion by Christine P. 6SG

    Wednesday February 12th 2020

At 8:45am, the Grade 6’s had an incursion in the hall hosted by a man named Nick, who works for Star Lab. Most students gained a deeper understanding when learning about all the different types of planets, stars and how Earth was created. I was really happy that I learned more things about space, because they would come in handy for the future.

I learnt that the Earth’s layers (the middle, outer and inner core) have their own “ship”, which is also referred to as ways. The Earth is made out of four different layers: the crust, mantle, outer core and inner core. Nick also highlighted how the atoms moving in space merge into one and create a star, through the transformation which was pretty dramatic, because we also discovered what the process looked like.

As the presentation progressed, I learnt how “tectonic plates” are the main reasons why lava and heat emerge out of volcanoes and mountains. These plates are connected to the inner core, the same amount of heat as the sun and the lava from the inner core rises up in the tube-like plate that causes the eruptions of volcanoes. In the second session, I discovered the many problems associated with Earth being in danger.

The following problems have been raised that could possibly lead us to danger:

Sea levels are rising faster Natural disasters are increasing

because of carbon dioxide Earth will overheat by climate change

and greenhouse gases Earth will be 3 degrees hotter in the 21st

century Glaciers are melting Rivers overheating, causing it to dry up

Regarding this situation, we fortunately have the resources to prevent this from happening. As we are the next generation, I will keep this information in mind so that I can play my part in protecting the environment.

OUR L IBRARY IS BACK IN USE THANKS TO OUR GR.5’S…..

A special thanks to our Grade 5 students who

assisted us in moving tables this week from the

library to the shipping container. Their help was

simply fantastic as it has now freed up our library

    for use by all.

Students often help out around the school in this

way. The act of picking up rubbish to keep our

school tidy, putting seats up on desks to assist

the cleaner when vacuuming, setting up sports

equipment or games with the teacher provides

students with an opportunity to take

responsibility for their learning and play

environment. It is a simple way of teaching

students that through positive and helpful

actions, they can contribute to the betterment

of our school, our community, our world and

    especially their family.

Again, thank you to these students for making a

positive difference to our learning and library

    environment.

  • PROJECT COMPASSION 2020

This week the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which also marks the beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. Donations to Project Compassion allow Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to alleviate poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice.

We encourage you to put your compassion into action this Lent through your prayer, fasting and almsgiving by supporting Project Compassion. Through your generosity during Project Compassion this year, you are empowering communities with hope and helping those in great need to shape a better future for themselves, their families and their communities.

Today, each family will receive a Project Compassion box. Each grade also has a box in their classroom for the students to place donations into. Donation boxes need to be returned to the school by the end of this term, Friday 27th March.

This Lent, after the ash is washed away and we move through this journey to Easter, let us hold in our prayers those in our global community who are hurting from oppression, displacement, climate change, natural disasters, war, hunger and poverty.

  • In our Parenting session Melinda introduced us to the term Self-confidence. She spoke about how important it is for us as adults to build up our children’s confidence and Self-confidence. Her tips were… Building Children’s Confidence and Self Concept

o Separating the child from their behaviors. Say “I love you but I don’t love how you….”

o Treating the child with respect even when being disciplined

o Encouragement versus praise o Highlighting the attempt and effort rather

than the product o Affirm a child for who they are – point out

positive attributes of character o Provide opportunities for the child to

assume some level of responsibility o Always look for a moment of “goodness” The brain research shows that we are prewired to connect to people – positive relationships are critical! Self-concept is learned through the key messages we hear repeatedly. Kids who feel good about themselves have the confidence to try new things. They are more likely to try their best at everything they do. They feel proud of what they can do and understand that there is always something that they need to work on. Self-esteem helps kids cope with mistakes. It helps kids try again, even if they fail at first. As a result, self-esteem helps kids do better at school, at home, and with friends. Next week we will focus on Anxiety in Childhood… Mrs Jess Davis Deputy Principal, Wellbeing & School Organisation

Feast of Santo Nino Written by: Luisa Fletcher

This year’s Sinulog at Resurrection Parish

was once again an entertaining and yes, a

religious celebration of the Feast of Sto Nino.

Every year, the Sinulog committee organises

fundraising events that have been generously

supported by the parishioners, their families

and friends. This year, the money raised

enabled the committee to provide lunch to

those who wish to stay after the 10.30 mass,

cover the cost of the children’s costumes and

    most importantly, donate to Resurrection

Parish the amount of $4200. The meal was

    catered and supplemented by generous

contributions for which we are very grateful.

This meal was followed by dances performed

by the children, young adults and adults.

Each year, our dances have been different,

colourful and definitely energetic. We thank

all the participants who practiced tirelessly

    during the exhausting weather that

Melbourne was experiencing. Thanks also for

the wonderful team in the kitchen, the choir

with their lovely soloist who provided the

music, the vibrant drummers, the decorations

in the church and hall, the choreographers,

the flower arrangers, the mums and the

grandma who willingly sewed some costumes

and last but not least, those who stayed back

and cleaned up after the event. If you were

present at this year’s Sinulog and enjoyed

your experience, you are most welcome to

attend our next fundraiser, which will be a

fun evening. Be sure to look out for more

information in the church bulletin. It goes

without saying, all are welcome at our next

    Sinulog!

    FAREWELL PAULINE

It is with sadness that I announce that

Pauline has decided to retire from her

position as a Parish Pastoral Worker because

of ill health. Pauline has given 15 years of

generous service to many in our Parish

    community.

You are invited to Mass as we gather to

farewell and thank Pauline on Sunday 22nd

March at 10.30am. Refreshments will be

    provided afterwards.

Fr Noel will be joining us.

  • Dear parents, guardians and carers

Re: Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with

Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports

provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992

and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

    year of schooling

category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional

level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary,

    substantial or extensive.

    This information assists schools to:

formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools

consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools

develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational

    outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability. The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy). Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au). If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.
