Year 5 Camp

This week 178 Year 5 students attended the Year 5 Camp at Phillip Island along with four parents and sixteen staff

members. All the students were fully engaged in a range of challenge and team building activities including raft

making, giant swing, canoeing, searching for invertebrates in the pond, crate climb, team challenge, archery, beach

games, twin flying fox. These timetabled activities were supplemented by extensive games and sports. Throughout

the camp our students impressed all of the camp staff with their great manners and enthusiasm. The student will

return to school on Friday afternoon ready for rest and recovery over the weekend. A very big thank you to the

parents and school staff who worked tirelessly to ensure that every student had a wonderful experience away from

home and school.

Staff Professional Learning – Thursday 7th

and Friday 8th

March

MVPS staff had the privilege of working with the exceptional David Hornsby on “Understanding English Orthography – implications for teaching phonics and spelling”. David is an expert in teaching spelling and presents all over the world. He worked with staff on how to diagnose spelling misconceptions, explicitly teach spelling strategies and the importance of inquiry spelling to develop meaning. Staff members felt enlightened by some new and engaging strategies and look forward to implementing the new learning into their teaching.

What did the staff get up to lately? – An inquiry

into S.T.E.A.M

(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics)

During our recent Curriculum days, Mount View staff members

had the pleasure of workshopping with Adrian Francis from Using Technology

Better. During this time staff members were inquiring into the ‘what’ and

‘why’ of S.T.E.A.M inquiry within the classroom. Teachers engaged with a

range of hands-on activities including a variety of technology. We were able

to make links with their current practices, identify natural links within 2019

Programmes of Inquiry and enrich their understanding of what S.T.E.A.M

looks like at Mount View Primary School.

We look forward to seeing S.T.E.A.M in

action!

你 好!N ĭ Hăo!

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to all students who participated in cultural activities for

Suresh, Nishaanie Kajendran, Jenny Zhang, Kevin Zhang, Yayi Fu, Yunqin Lin, Sherry Wang, Yunyun Zheng and

Here are some reflections from the students:

“I think the language captains did a good job of hosting the assembly. I also enjoyed the ribbon dance. The language captains made the breaks parts funny. I think the language teachers did a great job for planning it.”

Shayen – 6ND

“My favorite part of the assembly was the Indian cultural dance because it is part of my culture and my religion. I also enjoyed the lion and dragon dance because the lion dance expressed the Chinese culture and was extremely amazing to see. It was wonderful to see every one dressed in their traditional clothing. The school was so colorful on the cultural diversity day.” Sid – 6AL

“The whole school dance was one of the best as it made everyone energetic for the rest of the day. It showed the teachers and parents the extensive amount of pratise the whole school did. However the Gong Xi dance song was the best. It got all the students together and more close. Overall Diversity Day was for students and teachers to show what country they are from. It does not matter whether you are from Asia, Europe, Africa or Australia.” Rohan – 6AL

亮。 我也很喜欢中国书法,因为我觉得很有意思。 我们画了猪, 还看了中国的画家的画。”

Melissa - 6MR

“多元文化日是一个非常好的机会 让学生们学习各个国家文化。 我非常喜欢这个节日。在这些活动中

我最喜华中国的毛笔画, 因为它能代表中国文化。 老师画的像真的一样。” Reiko & Arianna - 6

“Cultural Diversity Day was the most exhilarating thing I have ever experienced. There was so much awesome activities that our language teachers, parent helpers and teachers made possible. There were also a very amazing assembly that just blew me away.” Anoushka Sharma - 5CC

Mrs Caroline Barron – Performing Arts Teacher

What happening in the classroom…… Performing Arts

During term one in Performing Arts, the year two’s have been learning about beat and rhythm. They have sung songs, played games and learned the difference between a steady beat and a changing rhythm. This week they have learnt how to derive the rhythm from a song using paddle pop sticks while marking the beat with counters:

For 2019, UNSW has implemented some changes to their Global assessment tools, designed to meet the needs of the changing education landscape and to accelerate student’s growth to higher levels of achievement.

Mount View will continue to give students the opportunity to participate in the ICAS assessments (Reimagined for 2019). These will recognise academic excellence and reward student success through the achievement of medals and certificates.

There are a couple of noteworthy changes to these tests, one being that they will move online in 2019. All students in Year 3 – 6 will be using school or owned devices to complete these assessments. Please note: Year 3& 4 Writing – paper based. Another development is student results will be received within 4- 6 days (Year 3 & 4 writing 4-5 weeks).

More information visit www.unsw.global/icas

All students in Years 3 – 6 are strongly encouraged to participate in the four core areas of English, Mathematics, Spelling and Writing, with Digital Technologies and Science being optional competitions. Please note these dates in your calendars. A compass payment for ICAS will be sent to parents over the next few weeks.
