a strong win over Willoughby Park placing us in the lead at the lunchbreak. Mosman played a very strong Belrose team in the afternoon, and after a slow start came home strongly to register a narrow 3-shot loss. The 2018 Shield was won by West Pymble. Graded Fours & Mufti Singles The final competitions of the year got underway in October, with the finals of both to be contested in November. The Graded Fours semi-finalists are teams skipped by Jeff Hole, Bruce Atkins, Brian Spear and Stephen Lewis, and the Singles semi-finalists Kandiah Sivaloganathan and Brian Spear. Melbourne Cup Bowls This is always a November highlight, and it looks like we will have another good attendance this year. After morning bowls competition, we will enjoy a light lunch before watching The Cup at 3pm. There are prizes for the Best Hats, and sweep tickets will be sold on the day. Dress is "race-day mufti". Green Renovation The annual renovation of our greens will commence with the closure of the school green in mid-November. To accommodate all social bowlers,

ongratulations to the winners of our last Championship for the year. George Lindsay, Snowy Kable and Scott Denham are our 2018 Men's Triples Champions, defeating Brin Kerwood, Kandiah Siva and Bruce Bodinnar in a unique Final. Midweek Challenge With our B & C Grade teams defending their 2017 titles, this season has so far brought mixed results with our Bs and D's having a win, a loss and a draw and our Cs so far winless after Round 3. The Midweek Challenge continues through November. Mayoral Trophy The annual tussle between the Warringah and Mosman Clubs took place at Mosman in late October, with Warringah winners this year, ending Mosman's 7-year winning streak! Perhaps if our women were able to compete this year they might have just got us over the line . . . . We were honoured to have the Trophy presented to Warringah by Mosman Mayor, Councillor Carolyn Corrigan. Roseville Shield Mosman was again this year invited to contest this prestigious event which was held at the Lindfield BC. We were represented by Stephen Lewis, Jeff Hole, Brian Spear and skip, Kandiah Siva. Our team performed well, with

Helen – now our new Minor Singles Champion – Congratulations.
Bronwyn Fitzpatrick was once again part of the team representing our district in the NSW Blind Bowlers State Championship being played in Charlestown. Ailsa Maccallum was her director for this event. The competition was interrupted by rain but Bronwyn had a good win in the pairs.
We had a club selected team playing in the Lindfield Shield on 19 October. Representing our club were Margaret Gillies, Edwina Legg, Tosh Czinege and Jenny Hole in one team, the other t e a m c o m p r i s e d B e t t y - A n n e Cleveland, Gay Suters, Di Gould and Loyce Davis. Thank you for putting your names down and representing the club.
We are playing our Consistency Matches during November – we will need to play these in the mornings Wednesday and Saturday or during the week. The details are on the board.
Our Summer Fours will start on 3 November with matches being played morning and afternoon that day.
District Versatility is on Friday 9 November and is a club select event. Put your names down to enjoy this final district competition for the year.

ongratulations to the team of Jenny Hole, Denise Owen, Sue Addison and Judy Moyes on their win in the Neutral Bay invitational on Friday 26th October. They won this event against some very strong teams. Overall, Mosman has done very well in the club selected events and carnivals.
Our first event for the month was the Top Five. We were so lucky with the weather on the 11th. The day before and after were wetter than the Thursday. There were a few light showers so we were able to play and the day was a big success. Scott and Snowy did a great job preparing the greens for this event. The match committee headed by Loyce Davis did an outstanding job with the organisation of the event. Many thanks to our umpires – De Brown and Ailsa Maccallum, controlling body – Robyn O’Brien, helpers Carolyn Duhigg, Ann Barron and Edwina Legg for their assistance with the smooth running of the day. The overall winners were Belrose with Double Bay runners up.
The minor singles played on Saturday 13 October started in dry conditions with the weather changing during the afternoon. Helen Haran played Loyce Davis in a match with many ends resulting in a single shot and a close measure. The match resulted in a win to

On the afternoon of Saturday,
13 October, under threatening
rain laden skies and on a damp,
slow rink, the 2018 Minor
Singles was played out with
Helen Haran victorious over
Loyce Davis in a tough,
seesawing match. Loyce got off
to a good start but Helen’s
tenacious persistence paid off in
the end. She played some fine
shots. The final score of 25/14
wasn’t really indicative of the
quality of the match.
Cheers and congratulations all round for Helen!

Best Wishes
We are nearly at the end of another very busy bowling year. The calendar should resume the normal events for the year with our Major Singles starting in January.
I hope as many as possible will attend
event. To allow maximum availability Saturday morning bowls will be resumed, while afternoon games will be mostly Fours. As the placement of the banners along the Belmont Roadd fence has brought many positive comments, agreed they should remain to continue to promote awareness of our Club. The condition of the banners will be monitored, but as they are designed for regular use we are hoping they can be permanent fixtures.
Malcolm Munday has stepped down from his role handling the weekly banking, and we thank him for his years of service. We are seeking a member volunteer to take on this responsibility, which entails around 1 hour each week. If you are interested, please approach Treasurer Richard O'Brien. Agreed that all plastic items, including water cups, straws and plates, will be phased out and replaced with sustainable products. Agreed that 2 new water bubblers will be installed at the southern end of each green. The faulty refrigerated water dispenser near the bbq will be replaced before the summer months. The Club has negotiated with Olympus Sports in Neutral Bay (Dymocks Arcade) to provide vouchers enabling a discount on women's and men's Adidas bowls shoes. Our library will be made more accessible to members by opening the Women's Locker Room each social bowls day. The School Green will be coming out for its annual renovation following the Melbourne Cup bowls

This year's Men's Triples Championship was an extraordinary match in many ways.
George Lindsay, Snowy Kable and Scott Denham well and truly controlled the game
through the first half - the score-line after the 15th end was 26/5 - but then came the
rain! And with it came a fight back from Brin Kerwood, Kandiah Siva and Bruce
Bodinnar who adapted to the heavy green far better than their opponents, taking the
next 19 shots straight! Going into the last end Scott's team were hanging on to a 2-
shot lead, but it was really anyone's game. To their great credit the eventual winners
held their nerve, with George, Snowy and Scott taking the last end by a shot and
winning the Championship 27/24.
Well done to all players for an entertaining and gripping Final.
What a day! With the weather forecast not all that flash and the midweek Pennant matches
being called off the day before, the chances of the Top Five Shield being completed were
slim. But the sun shone on our greens for most of the day and the rain held off till the final
couple of afternoon ends.
Mosman BC has held the Top Five Shied Competition
annually since acquiring the event from Willoughby BC
in 2001.
This year, on Thursday 11 October, twelve clubs from all
over Sydney competed for the Shield, playing morning
and afternoon matches of 3-bowl Pairs and 2-bowl
Triples over 18 ends. The sides were from:-
Belrose, Clovelly, Double Bay, Harbord, Lindfield,
Mosman, Newport, North Epping, St Ives, Turramurra
and Warringah
All matches were hard fought.
Our sponsors, Mosman Travel and Crystal Cruises, were invited to present the prizes and
Shield to the winners and runners-up. The day’s Runners-Up were the team from Double
Bay with 4 wins with aggregate shots of 84 of Iris Kampel, Barbara Shotland, Gail Black,
Jan Frape and Pam Stein.
The 2018 overall Winners were the “Rose Belles” team from Belrose of Michelle
Treadwell, Margaret Brady, Kay Alderton, Benita Andrews and Patricia Tan with 4 wins
with aggregate shots of 99.
It was a tough day at the office for our very own Mosman side of Denise Owen, Julie
Hayden, Betty-Anne Cleveland, Judy Moyes and Jenny
Hole. However, this fivesome put up a heck of a fight
and represented our club honorably.
The event would not have happened without people-help
and a humungous thank you to all who made the day
such a success: our Office Manager, Rhian; our
Greenkeepers, Scott and Snowy; Jennifer and Yasmin,
Cathy Wilson, De Brown, Ailsa Maccallum, Caroline
Duhigg, Lyn Adam, Ann Barron, Edwina Legg, Julie
Hayden, Jenny Hole and the whole Match Committee
(Betty-Anne Cleveland, Robyn O’Brien, Sue Buchanan).

MWBC Top 5 Shield
Neutral Bay held their annual Invitation Competition on Friday 26th
October and Mosman were the lucky winners.
The team of Denise Owen, Judy Moyes, Sue Addison and Jenny Hole
(skip), were the only team to win all three games on the day. Each game
was ten ends and teams played were Killara, Turramurra and North Ryde.
In all there were twelve
invited teams and Neutral Bay
did a great job of organising
the day.
Conditions on the ‘green’ were
typical of Neutral Bay, which
is always a bit of a challenge
but after an initial roll up we
enjoyed the weather and the
conditions and everyone
played great bowls.
The 2018 Mosman Mayoral Trophy has been won by Warringah BC, ending Mosman's 7-year run of wins. Contested over just 4 rinks, Mosman and Warringah won 2 rinks each, but Warringah had the edge on the "big board", winning 90-81. Unfortunately this year's event was a men-only affair, as Warringah was unable to muster sufficient women to make up a team. The Mosman women played their own tournament as part of the day, and such was the quality under the fast, gusty conditions, perhaps had they been
able to play Warringah they might just have helped to get Mosman home!
The Trophy was presented to Warringah President Greg Cutler by Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan - congratulations to our neighbours.

The club looked great for the Spring Lamb
event with beautiful flowers and balloons,
pastel tablecloths and everyone dressed in their spring finery.
Arrival time was set at 1pm with cards called at 1.20 and play commencing at
1.30pm. 60 people signed up with 48 playing
bowls as well. Everyone looked great in spring
clothing.
John Candy did the cards. Three bowls triples
with the winners playing winners and losers
playing losers. Games finished at various times
but there was plenty of time because dinner was
at 6pm.
As it turned out, this year was not daylight
saving but it was cold rather than light that
caused an early finish after about 7 or 8 ends. By
then it was 5pm so by the time people put their
bowls away etc and had drinks and chips it was
dinner time.
Jeannie had organised the lamb be served at
6pm. The night had a Greek theme in that Ari
Schepis made two big bowls of tzatziki and Greek
and rice salads were made by Cathy, Jenny, Pam and Jeannie. Dessert was
tiramisu and fresh cream.
A spring quiz was held between the mains
and dessert and was won by Ann Barron
and her team of brainiacs.
Everyone agreed it was a great night and
should definitely be on the calendar for
next year. Thanks to all those who made it
happen.

The aptly named team "Evans Above" was among a number of Mosman Pairs teams competing in the popular 3-bowl Pairs competition hosted by the Warrawee BC. It is good to see our Club represented so regularly at competitions and events held by Clubs within our Zone.

"Not-for-profit Treasurers have to get the basics right. There's
no room for flim-flaming talk or massaging the figures. The
money just has to be there, or everybody misses out. We owe
Club Treasurers a lot".
Congratulations to our past-Treasurer, Jeff Hole, on reaching the Finalist stage in
this nationwide Award designed to recognise those who untiringly provide
responsible service to not-for-profit bodies such as ours. Jeff has been our
Treasurer for the past 7 years, and due in a large part to his efforts our Club has
never been in better financial shape. Making the finalist list is worthy recognition
indeed.

202020ththth ANNIVERSARY OF SATURDAY MORNING TRIPLESANNIVERSARY OF SATURDAY MORNING TRIPLESANNIVERSARY OF SATURDAY MORNING TRIPLES
The team of Julie Hayden, Jenny Hole and Loyce Davis set off across the Harbour to
compete in the 20th Anniversary of Saturday Morning Triples at Marrickville Bowling Club.
This competition was the the brain child of the then President of Petersham BC who invited
local clubs to join in a Saturday morning competition. Over the ensuing years, the format
was picked up by other districts around Sydney.
The competition is still relevant today as it was
20 years ago with 7 zones still participating
across a wide slice of Sydney.
Margaret Osborne, a former vice-president of
NSWBA and Petersham bowler, was responsible
for many of the progressive ideas and promotion
of women’s bowls. To honour Margaret’s
outstanding contribution the day also
incorporated the Margaret Osborne Memorial
Breast Cancer day. All proceeds raised were
directed to breast cancer research.
After a successful morning of bowls and a
wonderful luncheon, the intrepid team was a little reluctant to return to the other side of the
Harbour as the afternoon’s gig at the bowlo looked like it would be great fun. The annual
Fruit Bowl Fundraiser was getting underway with all patrons dressing up in various fruit and
veggie attire with an afternoon of bare-foot bowls.
Always on the lookout for recruitment opportunities for Mosman BC, the girls took
advantage to show a patron the intricacies of the correct bowls delivery.
by Jeff Hole
Skips will often tell their teams
how important it is to “build a
head”. However, newer players
often don’t know what this
means. Here is an attempt to
explain.
Building a head means getting to
a situation where the head is
secure by having at least two of
your team’s bowls safely close to
scoring positions but not
necessarily the shot. Achieving
this position insures against
conceding a multiple score, and
allows the third and skip in a
fours match to look to winning
the end rather than to save a dire
position.
A skip’s thinking should take into
account the following:
1. Do not take risks either in
your team’s play or by
u n d e r e s t i m a t i n g y o u r
opposition’s ability to take
advantage of a situation. If
you do you are open to a
large count against you.
2. Build heads so that if you
cannot win an end then you
lose it by the minimum
numbers of shots. Don’t be
afraid to concede a shot
rather than risk going down
multiples by playing a
speculative bowl.
3. The top priority is to get early
bowls into the head to make it
secure. When this is achieved
ask for position bowls to
protect against running shots.
4. Be aware of adverse situations
in the head where jack
movement could provide a big
result for your opposition.
5. In calling for a shot it is good
tactics to choose an alternative
where there is more than one
chance of a successful result.
6. Fast or running shots should
only be played when the
position of back bowls is in
your favour and when you
have two bowls in the head.
Otherwise you risk conceding a
multiple. There are rare
occasions when killing the end
is the preferred option. But be
careful of the consequences of
an errant shot.
7. Encourage leads to play the
kindest side of the rink for their
delivery. This is normally, but
not always, the narrow side.
Only allow your lead a change
of hand if you are being
beaten.
8. If possible play your second on
the other hand so that both the
BUILDING A HEAD AND THE SKIP'S TACTICS
third and the skip have a
good understanding of a
bowl’s trajectory on both
hands.
9. Make sure your second
understands that their role
is to play to the jack or just
behind the jack. Seconds
should never play short.
10. For thirds and skips, if
holding shot, never be
narrow. When down, never
be wide.
11. In Pennant play be aware of
the situation on the main
board. There are occasions
when risks must be taken to
rectify a difficult situation
for your side. At other times
protection of a lead may
require a conservative
approach. Your side’s
success is more important
than that of your rink.
12. Think ahead. Try to consider
the consequences of your
opponent’s next bowl before
calling for or delivering your
own team’s bowl.
13. Make sure that your
instruct ions are wel l
understood by speaking
clearly so that your team-
mate can hear what you
have to say.
Only tell your team-mates
what they need to know.
Don’t complicate their
thinking with too much
information.
KILLED ENDS IN
SOCIAL BOWLS In our social games there are
occasional misunderstandings
about what to do when an end
is killed.
There are two, or perhaps
three, options.
The first is to play to the rules
of bowls and the end is
replayed.
The second is to place the jack
on the 2 metre mark. This helps
to ensure games end at
approximately the same time.
A possible third option may be a
compromise. That is, each team
is allowed one killed end to be
replayed and for all subsequent
killed ends the jack goes onto
the “T”.
In order to avoid arguments,
skips should decide which
option prevails before their
game starts. If there is no such
agreement the game will be
played to the rules of bowls and
the end should be replayed.
PLACING THE JACK
ON THE "T" Players should be aware that
when placing the jack on the “T”
the leading edge of the jack
closest to the mat should be
positioned at the “T”. There is a
misconception with some
bowlers that when placing the
jack on the “T” it is the centre
of the jack that is on the “T”.
This is not correct.
