Kindergarten to Year 12 Issue No: 32 22nd October , 2014
KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION MORNING – Wednesday 5th November in the school Library from 9.30am to 11.00am. All children turning 5 years of age before August 2015 are eligible to be enrolled at Molong Central School at the commencement of the school year 2015. The Kindergarten Orientation Morning for students commencing school in 2015 will be held on Wednesday November 5th in the School Library. Parents are invited to attend the morning information session, whilst the 2015 Kindergarten students will spend time in the classroom with the 2014 Kindergarten Students. Children are asked to bring morning tea with them, whilst morning tea will be provided for the parents and carers. Parents are asked to bring enrolment forms and all relevant documentation required in the enrolment process to the parent session. Many of the 2015 Kindergarten students have already spent time in the school, enjoying the opportunities afforded by our great Ready Set Go Program which has been running for most Thursdays in Term 3. Thank you to the Kindergarten teachers, Mrs Thornhill, Mrs Monk, Mrs Sullivan and Mrs Audrey Brown, the Assistant Principal of Stage One for the organisation of this well received program. Mrs Thornhill and Mrs Monk will be teaching Kindergarten in 2015. Our 2014 Kindergarten students have benefitted greatly in Literacy under the L3 Program which has had amazing results for our students. Mrs Brown is a District Trainer for this program and has been working with the Kindergarten teachers as well as Kindergarten teachers from other schools. Most Kindergarten students are reading above the State Benchmark and many students are reading well above expected literacy levels. It is an amazing program and thankyou to the Stage One Team for their expertise and knowledge. YEAR 11 COMMENCE THEIR HSC STUDIES Year 11 commenced their HSC Studies at the start of this term and will receive their Preliminary HSC report this week. Over the past school weeks, all Year 11 students have been interviewed by Mr Taylor, MCS Careers Adviser regarding their career options and required HSC subjects. Mr Costa ( Head Teacher Mathematics) and Mr Taylor have also been working with the students on their subject selections, making sure that the choice of subjects fulfils the requirements for the HSC and the Australian Tertiary Assessment Rank for University Entrance in 2016. Under their guidance, students will be able to change their subject allocations by the start of Week 4 (27th October).
Year 11 students have received their Year 12 Assessment books for 2015, along with the Higher School Certificate Rules and Procedures 2015 booklet which is published by the Board of Studies Teaching Education Standards (BOSTES). HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE The Higher School Certificate commenced on Monday 17th October with the first examination being English Paper 1. These examinations will continue until Wednesday 5th November with our students sitting the last examination, Information and Digital Technology, on that day. The HSC examinations are adjudicated by external examiners under strict rules for the Board of Studies Teaching Educational Standards. The school wish to acknowledge and thank Mrs Beryl Leitch and her team as they have been appointed examiner supervisors for the 2014 Higher School Certificate at Molong Central School. We wish all our students all the best for their examinations. YEAR 7-10 EXAMINATIONS The examinations for Year 7-10 will be held on:- 3rd to 7th November: Years 7 and 9 (Week 5) 10th to 14th November: Years 8 and 10 (Week 6) Primary classes will continue to complete their assessment and tests during class throughout the term leading to the publication of reports. ESSAonline 2014 The Essential Secondary Science Assessment (ESSA) test for Year 8 student will be held on Thursday 13th November 2014. The test takes approximately 80 minutes and is an interactive multimedia test completed entirely on a computer. It is called ESSAonline and contains multiple choice, short response and extended response tasks, which are grouped around real-world issues, including scientific investigations. This is a diagnostic test, with tasks framed on Stage 4 outcomes and essential content in the NSW Science Years 7-10 Syllabus. Students will be tested on their knowledge and understanding of Science; understanding and skills in the process of scientific investigation; ability to evaluate evidence; make judgements and think critically and ability to access information and communicate scientific ideas. Since students complete ESSAonline on a computer, each student needs to bring headphones or ear buds that plug into a school computer. If your child has a disability that needs special consideration or has been educated in English for less than one year, please contact the school to discuss special provisions or possible exemption from the test. Results will be available during Term 1 2015. Information about each student is confidential and held securely and a personal report for each student will be sent to parents/carers. If you require more information regarding this testing please contact the MCS Main Office.

CADIA VALLEY OPERATIONS EXCURSION On Friday 12th September students from Years 7 and 8 went on a Science excursion to the Cadia Gold Mine and Canowindra Fossil Museum. The first stop on the excursion was Cadia Gold Mine where the students were treated to a tour of the processing plant after a quick introductory talk. Inside the plant the students were able to see the giant ball mills where the rocks from the mine are crushed into smaller pieces. They then moved through to the froth flotation area where the students could see the gold forming at the top of the large vats of chemicals. The students also had an appreciation of how dirty the mining process was after leaving the plant. After a quick trip over to the open pit look out and a short photo shoot, we were back on the bus heading for lunch. The fossil museum was our next stop, where the students were able to look at the fossils of the various fish species found in the region. The students were able to track the fossils and evolution of the fish over time with the use of the audio devices. They also enjoyed the video connected microscope and the dirt under their fingernails. Overall it was an enjoyable day for all and we would like to thank the staff at both Cadia and Canowindra for their efforts. Mr B Evans, Head Science Teacher
CAN WE MAKE A WATERMELON EXPLOAD? On the last day of term, Year 10 science students organised an experiment to see how many rubber bands were necessary to cause the structural integrity of a watermelon rind to fail. Many students gathered to watch the tense process of adding one rubber band at a time until the rind finally exploded, splitting into many pieces. The watermelon was, of course, then enjoyed. And the answer... you need 1372 rubber bands to cause a watermelon to explode (although, different kinds of rubber band, or the individual characteristics of a watermelon may change that). INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY METAL “We designed, planned and built a shovel rack for the Agriculture Show Team. We started planning at the beginning of the second term and have worked consistently for the past 10 weeks. We designed the shovel rack to be modular so it can be easily pulled apart and transported from one place to another, using many different materials such as: Horse shoes, RHS (rectangular/rolled hollow section) steel, steel rod, checker plate, angle iron. We also used many hand and power tools which helped us work efficiently and to produce a high quality finished product, such as: Cold cut saw, Pedestal drill, Hammer, Angle grinder, MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welder, Paint brush and files. The shovel rack was painted to protect it from corrosion and to match our school colours. The hooks on the each end of the rack hold shovels and the hooks that are welded underneath the crossbar hold halters. The letters MCS at the top make it clear to observers that the students of Molong Central School are proud of their school.” Lachlan Middleton & Scott Twiss, Year 10 students

Reading Tips for Parents of Kinders Source: www.readingrockets.org
Play with letters, words, and sounds! Having fun with language
helps your child learn to crack the code of reading. The tips
below offer some fun ways you can help your child become a
happy and confident reader. Try a new tip each week. See
what works best for your child.
Talk to your child
Ask your child to talk about his day at school. Encourage him
to explain something they did, or a game he played during
recess.
Say silly tongue twisters
Sing songs, read rhyming books, and say silly tongue twisters.
These help kids become sensitive to the sounds in words.
Read it and experience it
Connect what your child reads with what happens in life. If
reading a book about animals, relate it to your last trip to the
zoo.
Use your child's name
Point out the link between letters and sounds. Say, "John, the
word jump begins with the same sound as your name. John,
jump. And they both begin with the same letter, J."
Play with puppets
Play language games with puppets. Have the puppet say, "My
name is Mark. I like words that rhyme with my name. Does
park rhyme with Mark? Does ball rhyme with Mark?"

LEARN-TO-SWIM Parents of Year 2-6 learner swimmers (and students
new to school this year) should have received a note
last week about our 10 day Learn-To-Swim Program
commencing on Monday 24th November at Molong Pool.
To assist planning, could parents please ensure signed
notes are returned to the Primary Office by this
Friday 24th October indicate whether (or not) their
child will need to attend these lessons. Any child who
is NOT able to swim a distance of 25 metres with confidence, in deep water using a recognised stroke
is able to attend. Full details of the program will then
be sent home with participating students. Notes are
available from the Primary Office if your child needs
to attend but did not bring home a note.
