Growers’ Tip Air circulation is a term you will often hear when researching or seeking advice from experienced growers on cultivating orchids. If we consider orchids growing in their native habitat it is easy to understand that air circulation would be a natural component of their requirements to function effectively. The air moving around their leaves can provide water, cooling, drying and nutrient laden sustenance. When we put our orchids be they species, or hybrids in a greenhouse we are effectively placing them in a controlled environment. Hence, it is then up to us to provide their requirements to achieve their full potential and to keep them free from diseases like fungal infections. Just like providing fertilizer and water, air circulation is essential. It can be achieved two ways, either naturally or artificially. The design and placement of a greenhouse are the two main elements of providing air circulation naturally. Before you build, consider the direction of the prevailing wind and how you can control it or in some cases limit it to your orchid’s benefit. Many challenges such as, other buildings and trees

that limit the breezes will be encountered by the suburban grower. Greenhouses with an apex

design roof can have the sections at the top covered in lower grade shade cloth to allow a tunnel effect to happen. Sheeting only part of a wall will allow air to flow over the top or under the open sections. Artificial air circulation is obviously provided by a powered source such as fans. This for many can be a big and limiting commitment due primarily to the cost . Over the years I have seen many effective and ingenious methods to get past this this hurdle. Have a look next time you visit someone who has overcome this challenge of providing artificial air circulation; they may have the solution from which you can adapt to your own situation. Good air circulation is often overlooked, but it is very important for continued success with cultivating orchids.

R.O.S.I Growers Group Report After several showery days, we had fine weather for our visit to Graham and Maxine Maunder’s residence on Sunday 28th April. 59 members attended and we spread ourselves in the shade of the huge Poinciana. As usual, there was much to see in the garden which featured many striking bromeliads. (Maxine’s passion!) Graham had a very beautiful Bulbophyllum Elizabeth Ann ‘Buckleberry’ flowering and happy in its position hanging from a branch of the Lemonade tree. A flowering Ctt. Fitz Eugene Dixon (Ctt. Portia x C. walkeriana) caught my eye in the Orchid house. I presented a short segment on Ctt. Chocolate Drop. The Reserve Champion of our Autumn Show was Ctt. Chocolate Drop x Rlc. Lemon Tree owned by Rosemary Wines. I mentioned many of the Ctt. Chocolate Drop crosses owned by other members. The main topic for the afternoon was repotting Cattleyas and also advice on dealing with very overgrown cattleyas. Trevor demonstrated repotting a plant to a group of newer members. A member brought along 2 plants as she was concerned about their growth. They were pronounced healthy by an experienced grower. New growers are welcome to bring along their problem plants as there are always experienced growers present who are willing to give advice. The Club Display for the coming September Conference/Show was discussed and several members from Growers Group have volunteered to help with the R.O.S.I display. The raffle was really well supported and we had 89 draws. Thank you to all who donated. Thanks, once again to Maxine and Graham for hosting our group. Our next outing will be at 2pm, Saturday, June 1 at the residence of Rosemary Wines, 53 Angela Road, Rockyview. Rosemary’s narrow driveway entrance is on the left immediately at the end of the neighbour’s white picket fence. Members are welcome to park on the lower area of Rosemary’s yard as long as there hasn’t been heavy rain beforehand. Also be aware of the Iron Bark trees that could drop branches. Please leave parking space closer to the house for people who are walking challenged. Remember to bring a chair, hat and plate of food to share and donations to the raffle are always welcome. One of the topics for June 1 will be Bulbophyllums. If anyone has a flowering Bulbophyllum, please feel welcome to bring it along. See you at 53 Angela Road, Rockyview on Saturday June 1 at 2pm. Margaret Handley Vale Brian Weaver Well-liked and respected member of the Rockhampton Orchid Society Inc. Brian Weaver passed away recently. Brian and wife Lorraine were very active members of the society since joining in July 1997 after retiring and moving from Blackwater. Brian was always ready to lend a hand at society events and functions. Brian was also life member of the Blackwater Orchid and Foliage Society. Many members of ROSI attended Brian’s large funeral to show their respects to Lorraine and their family. Those gathered heard how Brian was a much-loved family man and also well respected amongst the wider community. He will be sorely missed.

Species of the Month

The species of the month is Aerdies quinquevulnera . A plant of this species belonging to Moyna and Bill Richardson was the Champion Orchid at our recent Autumn Show so being a species, I thought it is quite apt to review for this month’s newsletter. Aerdies quinquevulnera is a species of the Aerdies genus that belongs to the Vandeae sub-family. Its membership of this sub-family can be easily discerned by its monopodial growth and aerial roots. Like many Vandas, it has a propensity to develop secondary growths and will readily grow into a specimen-sized plant such as, the plant at the Autumn Show. They are relatively easy to grow once started in a Vanda-basket with large (20-40 mm) medium such as bark charcoal, or rock for initial support. As mentioned above, if the plantlets are left on the main plant it will become a specimen that will never

need re-potting. On the other hand, the plantlets can be removed and multiple plants can be derived from the original if so desired. Like most Vandas it likes plenty of water and fertilizer in the growing season (Spring/Summer) and can be watered daily at the height of Summer as being monopodial it has a minimal storage structure (lateral roots) unlike orchids with rhizomes (sympodial) such as, Cattleyas. It hails from The Philippines and New Guinea. With its arching pendulous inflorescences of up to 30 pink/lavender flowers it is easy to grow and a delight for any orchid grower to have in their collection. Life Membership Award

At last month’s meeting Life Membership was awarded to Barry and Faye English . President Jeff Bloxsom presented certificates and badges to Faye, who also received them on behalf of Barry. The ROSI membership had previously ratified that they should be honoured with this award due to their sterling service to the society over many years. This included Faye serving as Secretary for 5 years and both Barry and Fay serving as the society’s property officers for 14 years; which involves making their home available for members to collect growing supplies and also setups for Show-sales. In addition, of late Barry and Faye have been responsible for the stewardship and introduction of the computerisation of the Show judging and plant barcoding system. Congratulations and well deserved!
