i3 Project Director’s Overview
The summer season is finally here and our i3 projects are going very well.
Like last year, we will soon be embarking upon a Summer of Safety, withinitiatives intended to keep us focussed on the all-important safety aspectsof our work.
i3 have now completed over 250,000hrs of work with zero LTIs, which isa statistic we should all be very proud of – Well Done!
Some of the technical aspects of our work will be spotlighted and celebratedin coming months as the Project Management, Engineering andConstruction skills as well as other services we offer continue to expandand develop.
With our combined i3 skills and our ‘reach-back’ capability, almost anyspecialism is available to us and this is exactly what we should be doingto provide the full life cycle of services to Sellafield and beyond.
Please continue to create innovations and safe solutions to keep i3 on itsjourney of continuous improvement and success.
Keep up the great work and stay safe,
Best Regards, Mike Lacey
i3 - BEST SAFETYOBSERVATION
Doing things the i3 way
As you are all aware, i3 are one of 6 keysupply chain partners that SL selectedto support the SL DecommissioningDelivery Partnership (DDP). The i3 teamare predominately aligned to MSSS andwe have been supporting thatprogramme for almost 2 years. Duringthis time, i3 have proven their ability tosupport the SL teams in a collaborativemanner across the multiple scopes thatwe are engaged. In addition to theMSSS programme objectives, i3 havealso supported other wider collaborativeimprovements. i3 gives support to theDDP framework in every way it can, toensure that we all deliver the benefits
that SL, DDP and i3 are tasked withdelivering.
In recent years, i3 have carefullyconstructed a skilled team thatintegrates the best of the personnel andsystems that the three lead companiescan offer. We can and should continueto 'reach-back' into the parentcompanies to draw-in new skills fromthis pool of experience and thisinnovative action has put us in a primeposition to offer our services to the widerSellafield business. At our core, we relyon individual talent to drive collectiveresults and we can support, refine ormanage any programme of work. Ourcontribution is always tailored to suitSL's needs, so that their time, moneyand effort is never wasted.
We have superb multi-level expertise inProgramme & Project Management,Risk Management, Supply ChainProcurement, CommercialManagement, Quality, Design andSafety Management and the i3 teamalso supplies a large blue-collarworkforce capable of undertaking a fullscope of multi-discipline works. So,what is next for i3 ? We need to keepchanging, evolving, developing andcoaching our people, systems andprocedures. We should aim to makeradical shifts in the way we operate, tobring in significant innovations to helpSL meet the complex needs of theRetrievals challenge. Please continueto do your bit for i3 and remember to doit with the right mind set with respect tobehaviours and safety. Do it right, do itsafe, do it the i3 way.
Steve Tugby presents a £50 voucher toChris Tyson for the Top Observation inFebruary 2018.
Chris noticed the microwaves in the teabar had not had their leakage test carriedout (expired in May 2017). He Reportedthe issue to SL to have the leakage testredone.
Excellent progress is being madewith the SEP 2 pressure testing insupport of inactive commissioning.25 hydrostatic and pneumatictests have been completed to dateand this has been carried outsafely with zero incidents. Goodprogress is also being made inpreparation for Hydraulics testing, these are the the highestpressures on the build – 207bardynamic leak test.

Rail Installation
In many construction tasks it's thepreparation required and the workingconstraints in which to deliver that are theunseen. The installation of the last rail(R3H), required to enable the SEP 2move into its next phase, had both ofthese.
R3H, a 12t rail, had been modified at anoffsite facility earlier this year. Externalinspection authorities were required toprovide the releasing documentation toenable the rail to travel the 22 miles viapublic highway onto site. Transportationwas organised with a specialist haulagecompany to be delivered at a pre-bookedsite gate at an agreed time.
The Central Walk Way was to bereinstated at Compartment 12. This
would maintain the access required tobuilding safety mechanisms, but also, critical to the installation of R3H, wouldprovide a thorough fare for all other worksto go on in the facility whilst a shear keywas drilled.
For the shear key to be drilled into theOperational floor, a sub-contractor wasrequired to enter the facility and mark outthe location; a drilling specialist wasrequired to stitch drill the shear keylocation, an activity that requiresintegration with the building stakeholdersto enable the location to be classifiedpre-drilling and declassified oncompletion. The shear key was thensigned as accepted by CS&Arepresentation.
The installation of R3H was undertakenwithin a campaign period of liquor
transfers. i3 had been provided a smallwindow of opportunity, an opportunitythat was further compounded with theuncertainty of the West End Cranemaintenance and the pending movementof the rolling platform which in turn iscritical to the progress of other projects.
For further information please contact thei3 project manager, Adrian Walker.
The i3 team are progressing well with the MSSS RoofReplacement Project and its ahead of schedule andunder budget. The milestone to provide a new roof coveron the 3rd Extension, has been achieved three weeksearly. New cladding has also been installed to the RoofPenthouses, walkways replaced, labyrinth vents & newpipeboxes installed in support of future Projects whichare key to successful Retrievals.
At present, the Roof team are concentrating their effortson both Phase 2 & 3, in-particular the installation of theBackspan steelwork sections, which are an essentialpre-requisite for the arrival of the Liebherr MK100 Towercrane to site, scheduled for July 2018. To date the teamhave stripped & weather sealed 2037m2. Furthermorewe have Kalzipped 1956m2. For more information onthe Roof project please contact the i3 PM Jon Wilson.
