Stellar Role Models DayOn Thursday, 16th May, Maclean High School Year 10 students participated in a collaborative Role Model Day. This was a joint initiative of Southern Cross University and Maclean High School.

Students spent four periods engaging in mini workshops with community members working in local organisations, businesses, Southern Cross University and TAFE NSW. Students are further developing their knowledge to assist with making more individualised and future focused subject and career choices.

LS1This week the students of LS1 visited Warregah Island Farm to meet the animals and to collect fresh produce. They were lucky enough to meet the farm’s newest residents, twin baby lambs who were born last week.

Northern Rivers Zone Cross CountryThe 2019 Northern Rivers Zone Cross Country was once again held at Lismore Race Course on Friday, 17th May. Our 25 strong team started the day under a small shower but, as we walked the course, the skies soon cleared for perfect running conditions and so started an epic performance by all. This year has been one of our most successful years with 18 of the 25 students making it to the North Coast Carnival in a few weeks time. Our student performances included:1st Place 14 years Girls - Kalani Ives. 14 years Boys - Kele Jeffrey. 15 years Girls - Carissa Miltiadou. 15 years Boys - Kayne Wells.2nd Place 17 years Boys - Josh Morris. 13 years Girls - Molly Bennett.3rd Place 13 years Girls - Maddi Norris.

And in the top 10 to also represent at the next carnival are Isabelle Addison, Samuel Jackson, Jazmyn Adey, Zane Lowe, Jackson Moss, Breanna Fischer, Jacqui Samms, Maddi Hollis and Paris Brailsford.

Awesome work by everyone who participated despite their results; it was a pleasure to watch you strive to do you best.

Mrs Lowe and Mr Lenard.

Opens Touch Football Zone Trials and Knockout CarnivalLast Thursday Maclean High School boys and girls Opens Touch teams travelled to Goonellabah for our annual CHS Knockout Competition and Northern Rivers Zone selection trials. Both teams displayed excellent sportsmanship, skills and tactical plays throughout their games which were brilliant to spectate and coach.

The boy’s side unfortunately lost their first game in a close battle against Kyogle High School, but came back fighting with two comfortable wins against Evans River K-12 School and The Rivers combined schools. The girl’s team started on fire and won their first game against Kyogle High School 5-1. A challenging second game against Casino High School saw a close 3-2 score but our team got ahead in the dying moments. That set the girls team up for the Zone Final. Unfortunately the well drilled Alstonville High School side just beat us with their stamina in another tight 3-1 outcome.

Although our teams are not progressing to the next rounds success came in the form of the Zone team selections where Zhanae Whalley, Tia Hollis, Jade Moffitt, Brian Quinlin-Randall, Connor Bridges and Tyler Essex have all been nominated to play for the Northern Rivers team in an attempt to make the North Coast sides early next week. Congratulations and good luck. Mrs Lowe and Miss Bowley.

Dear parents and caregivers, We are writing to invite your child to participate in the 2019 Mission Australia Youth Survey.

What is the Mission Australia Youth Survey? Now in its 18th year, the Mission Australia Youth Survey is Australia’s largest annual survey of young people of its kind. With over 28,000 respondents in 2018, the Youth Survey offers important insights into the lives of young Australians and an understanding of their values, concerns, challenges and ambitions. Why is my child being asked to take part and what they be asked to do? The survey seeks to gather a range of insights into the lives of young people aged 15 to 19 across Australia. Your child is invited to complete an online questionnaire that will ask about some personal characteristics, some of their education, work, and social activities, as well as their experiences in social groups. The study will involve the completion of an online questionnaire that takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. The majority of questions require young people to check a box to indicate their response (such as yes/no questions or scales that rate the response from 1 to 5). There are a small number of questions that allow for free-text responses. What will my child gain from being involved in this study? Your child’s participation in the survey will help Mission Australia to develop reports that are widely used by governments, community organisations, policy makers and NGOs across the country to develop programs that support young people in the future. Your child’s school may also request a report based on school-level data. These reports may help your school to develop programs that respond the needs of your child and their peers. Will my child be identifiable by being involved in this study? All information that you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence. Data provided through this survey is encrypted and transferred to SurveyGizmo’s server in the USA. By completing this survey, participants agree to this transfer. All data will be stored securely on a password protected drive at Mission Australia, accessible only to the Research team. Your child will not be identified in any reports resulting from the research. However, if any responses indicate risk of abuse, neglect or harm, we are legally obliged to report this information to your school principal and/or regulatory body. No other information about participants or their responses will be shared with the school principal. The survey has undergone appropriate ethical review process and the NSW Department of Education has approved us to approach your school’s principal about the survey. We anticipate few risks from your child’s involvement in this study. There is no contact between researchers and participants or parents. We have been careful to make sure that the questions in the survey cause little distress. How do my child and I agree to participate? Participation is completely voluntary: it is you and your child’s choice to take part or not. The decision to take part or not will be respected. Your decision will not affect your family’s relationship with your school. Will I hear about the results of this project? Yes, we anticipate that you will hear about the results of this project across news platforms and possibly through your school. Following its publication in late November, the Mission Australia Youth Survey Report is widely referenced across online, print and television media. Where can I get more information? You can find out more about the Mission Australia Youth Survey by going to our website: missionaustralia.com.au/what-we-do/research-impact-policy-advocacy/youth-survey. You can also contact the Research Team by emailing [email protected] or giving us a call at (08) 8218 2851. We will happily answer any questions you have about the Youth Survey.

If you are NOT happy for your child to participate please contact your school.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Joann Fildes Head of Research and Evaluation Mission Australia

CHS Girls TennisThe Maclean High School girls tennis team had an excellent win in the third round of the CHS Floris Conway Cup against Alstonville High School recently. The team consisted of Molly McLeod, Piper Ramsey, Taya Norris and, new to the team, Samantha Hayman. Quality tennis was played throughout the first two doubles matchups with both teams feeling out the competition and in the end it was one set a piece with the number one pairing of Hayman and Norris going down and the second pairing of McLeod and Ramsey winning to leave the match poised on a knife edge with Alstonville one up on games.

The singles would be crucial to the outcome. Molly was up first and although committed to the task came up short against a very consistent opponent going down 6-1, while in a marathon on court three Taya pushed through brilliantly for a 6-3 win. We were in trouble on games, however, and the pressure was on. Piper hit the court and with some devastating serves and aggressive groundstrokes demolished Alstonville’s number two 6 blot, to bring the game score back to nearly level.

The number ones were up, our new young gun Samantha Hayman who has been in scintillating form throughout her junior career was up against an old foe. The tension was palpable; there was silence on Union Street. Neither player gave an inch. Alstonville needed the set to put pressure back on us in the reverse doubles and with a win, we could seal the match. Something had to give, in a nail biting fifth game Alstonville got the break they needed and served out for a 6-4 win. At three sets a piece it would come down to the reverse doubles and with the masterstroke of strategy to choose our doubles teams by drawing them out of a hat, our girls won both the final doubles matches convincingly 6-1 and 6-4 for a 5 sets to 3 victory.

Thanks goes to Alan Jurd and the Lower Clarence Tennis Club for their support.

Mr Mark Ramsey.
