CONSTELLATION MODEL FLYING CLUB

The first week of April was the biennial Golden Era air races. This year there was a completely new lot of faces running the show, and credit to them as

they managed to do an excellent job. Entry numbers were down compared to previous years, but there were still competitors from NSW, Vic, and of course the Double D’s, Dave Newcomb and Dave Porter from Pt Lincoln. It is always great to chat with these guys and catch up on what is happening in other states. Unfortunately the first day had to be cancelled due to high winds and dust storms passing through. Those that can remember that far back, the Port Wakefield road had to be closed due to an accident and the fear of more accidents due to the poor visibility caused by the dust. The closure was only a few kilometres from the field so you can imagine how bad it was. Thank goodness Saturday was much better with racing getting under way early enabling 3 rounds to be flown that day. As normal there was the usual amount of carnage. Unfortunately for spectators this year there were no mid airs collations which is always spectacular. For me the most spectacular incident was Greg Leigh’s plane catching alight with flames pouring out the side. Talk about scale racing, it looked just like the real full-size thing until the out of scale fire marshals got there to put it out. Sad to say I doubt if the plane will fly again, the model may been a few years old but it was well kept and beautifully presented. Numbers may have been down but this managed to worked in favour of the organizers as they were able to quickly get through the rounds. Even though Friday had been cancelled organisers were still able to get in 5

rounds, and as a competitor you always want to get in as many races as possible to make all the effort worthwhile. This year a lot of people were having motor problems which is unusual for a Golden Era event as competitors usually have their motors sorted out and going like mad. On a personal note when I got home and checked over the motors I found that the filter in the carbie of my main model was partially blocked, just enough to put it off song, while the carbie in the backup model’s was quite bad, this explained why in the last round I was frantically praying to the Modelling Gods just to

get it to the end. I presume that the other people with problems found a similar explanation. Obviously, dirt from the first day’s dust storms had got into everything and caused havoc. Classes were won by the usual faces, Mike O’Reilly taking out the Golden Era Inline class, Frank Weeks again winning F1 and in doing so set a new course record. Mike Savill won the Golden Era Radial class. Mike O’Reilly won the Reno class and it was good to see Greg Leigh wining the new 30cc War Bird class which turned out to be a great success. Bruce Thompson won the Concours trophy with his beautifully presented Mustang. As it would fly by I frequently heard spectators comment how great it looked; a well-deserved win. To make this type of event work requires a lot of people behind the scenes, so thanks to all those that put in their time to make the event the success it was. See you all in two years time.

CATEGORY REPORTS Control line provided a brief verbal report of their participation at the recent National Championships held at West Wyalong NSW. The event was well supported and despite some wild windy weather the program of events was successfully completed. Credit was given to the event organisers for their efforts in running a successful championship covering multiple disciplines. One young local girl won the hearts of the control line competitors by attending the event every day without fail and was totally absorbed in their passion. Following the official competition, a Come and Try event was held where this young lady was invited to fly. After a relatively short period of instruction she successfully flew solo and was later presented with equipment sufficient to get her started in control line.Concern was also expressed into the lack of support in states supporting and running future the National Championship events. This meeting was advised that this matter is an item on the agenda upcoming National Conference where the future of the nationals will be determined.

GENERAL BUSINESS

• That MASA Executive would arrange a site visit to evaluate the boundary fencing and determine courses of action.

• MAAA as landowner be approached to support notification be erected indicating to the effect that “Dumping of Rubbish, Unlawful Entry, Shooting on the property is prohibited”

Concorde further requested that as the Onsite Bore and water licence is in the process of being purchased by MAAA, that the exiting water meter incurring ongoing costs to MASA and Concorde be removed. The cost of removal by SA Water amounted to $677 which MASA would have to pay with an 18% proportion contributed by the Concorde Club.Following discussion, it was moved by Concorde seconded by ORAM that the water meter be removed subject to permission from MAAA as the landowner. Motion carried. Secretary to contact MAAA seeking permission.

Junior Memberships.Skyhawks raised the issue of attracting juniors in to the sport with suggestions of fee reductions. The meeting was receptive to attracting juniors and deemed as this was a national issue that an ideal opportunity exists for the MASA council delegates to raise this issue with the MAAA marketing people and when setting the fees at the National Conference later this month.

SHMAC.Following the success on last year’s 100th Anniversary, the club advised that the “Dawn Patrol” is on again next year. The event will be run on Sunday November 10th 2020.The club requested MASA support with encourage awards for the event which was approved.
