FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome to the 2014 January Newsletter.
I hope this Newsletter finds you all healthy, wealthy and wise after the festivities of Christmas and New Year. The year ahead’s planning is well under way and 2014 looks like a very busy year. Many activities have already been organised by our Outings and Events Officer, Anthea and also our Interest Group Leaders have been hard at work to keep us all on the “Go”, organising trips to:- Kiama, Riverboat Tour (Postman), Bilpin, Yarrawonga, Newport Arms, Wentworth Falls, Lyn and Bob Hayhow’s wine and cheese evening in January, Yvonne and John Webb’s on 2nd March and Sandy Jack’s late March, just a few to whet your appetite.
As I write this I am reminded that it is our Newsletter Editors birthday on the 9th January, Happy Birthday Lesley (this should get some brownie points).
We only have one more meeting till our AGM on the 7th March 2014, if you would like to nominate for a position on the Management committee, forms are available on the Membership Officer’s table at the February meeting.
One of our Probus members, John Webb, has unfortunately had a major health setback during the Christmas New Year break and we are all thinking about he and Yvonne at this very distressing time.
Looking forward to seeing you all at our 7th February meeting.

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR:
I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very Happy New Year and wish that
you may all experience health and happiness as the year progresses.
Firstly, I must hasten to add that I am very reluctant to share a page with Kerry in his exulted position of
President, however as this note will explain, I don’t have a lot to include in this issue.
By way of explanation, as we have not met since early December, I have not received very many items for
inclusion in this edition, but as it is necessary to advise activities for February I must press on regardless and ask
that you be tolerant of the lack of serious information and perhaps you may even find a couple of articles rather
amusing - I certainly hope so.
Please keep up your good work during 2014 and let me have items of interest for inclusion.
Here I sit - working away with diligence.

DECADENT DAY-TRIPPERS

FIRST OUTING FOR 2014
DATE: Tuesday 11th February 2014
MEET: Carrington Street - behind Wynyard Station.
TIME: 10.30 a.m.
LUNCH: We are lunching in the Newport Arms Garden Bistro (politically correct name for Beer Garden)
ITINERARY:
A chance for us to relive our youth! We meet at Carrington St – Bus Stand C right behind Wynyard Station (between George & York Sts.) promptly at 10:30am. We can then catch the L88 or L90 bus for the 70 minute scenic tour to Newport. Alight in Beaconsfield St near Kalinya Street and walk 120 metres to the Arms. We shall be dining in the Garden Bistro. For those of us with an Entertainment Book, the bistro is coupon B6.
Return L90 buses run every 15 minutes starting at 5 past the hour.
SECOND OUTING FOR 2014
After much consideration, a date and destination for our March outing have been determined as follows:
WENTWORTH FALLS TRIP
DATE: Tuesday 25th March 2014
ITINERARY:
A chance to take in the colours of Autumn in the Blue Mountains!
Meet the train (Carriage 2, Upper) at Parramatta (8:43am), Blacktown (8:52) or Penrith (9:06) to arrive at Wentworth Falls at 10:07. We have 5 minutes for a Pit Stop or to visit a bottle shop before boarding the 685 bus at 10:13 for the short ride and walk to the Blue Mountains National Park.
Relax, or take a walk to the Breakfast Point Lookout. Then lunch at the Conservation Hut (BYO $3pp) around 12:00. We reboard the 685 at 2:00pm for the 20 minute journey to Katoomba where we have a 50 minute chance to shop etc. before boarding the 3:14pm train back down the mountains.

CHEESE & WINE EVENING
JANUARY 2014
Our first Cheese & Wine Evening for the year was held at the home of Lyn and Bob Hayhow last night.
Although Lyn was worried for a whole week preceding this event that it would rain (whoever would expect rain in
this neck of the woods?), it was a fine and balmy night after all.
It was great to catch up with so many people (around 36 in fact) after such a long break over the holidays and
we were all able to enjoy a chat and a catch-up on everyone’s news after almost a two month break.
We were all thoroughly impressed with Bob’s prowess in trimming his hedges and maintaining his beautiful lawns
and think that he must have Lyn out there holding a ruler to execute such a geometrical masterpiece.
Personally, if Norrie had a hedge trimmer in his hands I would not stand anywhere close at all as I would be sure
to say something critical of the job and then that “may be that”, with Probus looking for a new Newsletter
Editor!!!
Barry was on hand, of course, with his trusty camera to take some photographs of the host and hostess
displaying our pizza delicacies and another of Bev Potter, Lyn Armstrong and Joy Fink enjoying a quiet wine
together.
RESTAURANT REVIEW
The Seed Thai Restaurant - http://www.theseedthai.com.au/
The Seed has been open a few months in the EAT STREET on Norwest Lake (near Coles). We were there on a Friday evening in early December and the place was close to full – always a good sign. In fact, it seemed the busiest of the 5 restaurants there. With the lake in the background, the ambience was good. The service was friendly and prompt. The menu had all the usual suspects plus some unusual Signature dishes and specials.
Whilst the prices were not cheap, the portion sizes were large so it represents good value for money. $60.80 bought us an entrée, 2 mains, 1 rice and corkage. The food was very flavoursome with “clean” spices.
Will we return? Definitely!

MOVIE MORNING
Happy New Year to all our Probus Members.
At the last meeting l informed our members we would not be returning to our movie mornings till the last Thursday in February due to school holidays. However I realise now that school resumes for Term 1 on January 28, allowing us to commence our first movie morning for the new year on Thursday January 30.
I will email all of those members who have supplied their email addresses when I have the movie selections and times. Hoping to see you all for a great new start to the new year.

SENIORS AND COMPUTERS
As we Silver Surfers know, sometimes we have trouble with our computers.
I had a problem yesterday, so I called Eric, the 11 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control and asked him to come over.
Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.
As he was walking away, I called after him: “So, what was wrong?”
He replied: “It was an ID ten T error.”
I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless enquired: “An, ID ten T error? What's that? In case I need to fix it again.”
Eric grinned: ..”Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?”
“No”, I replied.
“Write it down,” he said: “and I think you'll figure it out.”
So I wrote down:

I used to like Eric, but now I’m now quite sure!
ART GROUP OUTING – JANUARY 2014
A group of six had a most enjoyable visit to the Blacktown Arts Centre. Most paintings amazed us, some dismayed us, the children's paintings delighted us. It was fun going around with the age old attitude of "I don't know much about art, but I know what I like!" Afterwards four of us tucked into a lovely lunch at Quakers Inn.

LUNCH: Macquarie Arms Hotel – Thompson Square Windsor ($10 special)
Hawkesbury Regional Museum is located in one of our country’s oldest settlements. Here you can see things you won’t find anywhere else, from the celestial globe that belonged to John Tebbutt (renowned astronomer), to the diary kept by a member of HMAS Hawkesbury during World War II recording the Japanese surrender. Not to mention that uniquely Hawkesbury creation, the flabbit. What's a flabbit? Come to the museum and find out.
We will also visit Howe House, an historic house that has been fitted out with furnishings and displays that reflect its many uses over more than 200 years of history.

Art Gallery of NSW to view the Hidden Treasures from the National Museum of Afghanistan. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to discover the surprising, untold story of the long and extraordinarily rich culture that is Afghanistan. Afghanistan was at the heart of the Silk Road, the trading route travelled by Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and Marco Polo, linking ancient Iran, Central Asia, India and China, and the more distant cultures of Greece and Rome.
Also the free exhibition Art Express (HSC students work).

THIS SUMS IT UP WELL!
Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary. We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others.
HOWEVER, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the senior citizens who took:
The melody out of music, The pride out of appearance,
The courtesy out of driving, The romance out of love, The commitment out of marriage, The responsibility out of parenthood, The togetherness out of the family, The learning out of education, The service out of patriotism, The Golden Rule from rulers, The nativity scene out of cities, The civility out of behavior, The refinement out of language, The dedication out of employment, The prudence out of spending, The ambition out of achievement or God out of government and school.
And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance from personal relationships and interactions with others!!
And we do understand the meaning of patriotism, and remember those who have fought and died for our country.
Just look at the Seniors with tears in their eyes and pride in their hearts as they stand at attention with their hand over their hearts!

I'm the life of the party...... Even if it lasts until 8 p.m.
I'm very good at opening childproof caps.... with a hammer. I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up.
I'm smiling all the time because I can't hear a thing you're saying. I'm sure everything I can't find is in a safe secure place, somewhere.
I'm wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that's just my left leg. I'm beginning to realize that aging is not for wimps.
Yes, I'm a SENIOR CITIZEN and I think I am having the time of my life!

GUEST SPEAKER FOR FEBRUARY MEETING
The Guest Speaker for our February Meeting will be Mr Alexander Nilsen. Alexander is going to talk about Shen Yun Performing Arts, an international Classical Chinese Dance and Music company that is reviving five thousand years of Chinese civilization. Although blue-eyed Chinese actually do exist, Alexander is not one of them. He is blue-eyed but not Chinese.
Alexander grew up in a traditional family of fishermen in a little village in Norway. In his early twenties he set out to travel the world exploring different cultures and ancient civilizations before settling in Australia 3 years ago.
His fascination for ancient cultures reached its peak when he saw Shen Yun Performing Arts for the first time. Since then Alexander has been passionately involved in Shen Yun every year.
We are confident you will find Alexander’s presentation very interesting.
