Spotlight on Dyers Mews

This month we put the spotlight on Dyers Mews, one of Precious Homes’ residential services in Milton Keynes. Dyers Mews welcomes new Manager, Sally Mills, celebrates a revamped kitchen and oice as well as some amazing outcomes for people supported. Dyers Mews is a registered service designed for six people, with four people currently supported in Milton Keynes.

New Manager Sally Mills, who was recently promoted from Deputy Manager, said: “We support a range of needs at Dyers Mews including autism spectrum condition, learning disabilities and mental health needs.”

The people supported and support team at Dyers work closely with Precious Homes internal MDT developing therapeutic and behavioural strategies and promoting engagement in a personalised way.

“The team come to us each week to do various sessions with two of the individuals. They are regular faces here at the service and a key part of our team.”

The key focus is working in a person centred way and ensuring sure that each person is supported in the best way possible to suit their needs.

Dyers Mews has also had some environmental uplis over the past few months with a brand new kitchen and oice space to enhance the service.

“The new kitchen space and environment is brilliant. We now have 2 ovens and more space – with the plan to be able to complete more group work, baking and cooking sessions. A real hub at the heart of the home that we look forward to using.”

On the 18th October our West Midlands team were delighted to oicially open Falcon Mews, Robin’s View and L’uccello Café as part of the second phase of our three-tiered residential and supported living service in Kings Heath, Birmingham.

Social workers, care coordinators, commissioners, people supported, parents and members of support groups were amongst the guests who came along to meet the team and have a look around the state-of-the-art new services and social enterprise. Swan Court, Falcon Mews and Robins View make up a three-tiered pathway model, which provides individuals with a ‘Transition Care Pathway’ on site, enabling a step-down to more independent living and reduced support over time. Senior Service Manager, Paul Smedley explains: “Following the opening of Swan Court earlier in June, we were delighted to welcome Chief Executive of Care England, Professor Martin Green back for a second visit to cut the ribbon on the two supported living services: Falcon Mews and Robin’s View, and Precious Homes’ first ever social enterprise: L’uccello Café!” The Social Enterprise oers a fantastic new café and polytunnels for horticultural activities along with certified courses and training opportunities on site for the people we support across our services. L’uccello café was the focal point for visitors to congregate with people we support from Precious Homes’ Arthur House residential service serving drinks and refreshments and bringing the café to life!

“This was the café’s first day and what a day it was! L’uccello Café was bursting at the seams and the buzz was really incredible. People supported and supporting team members worked hard prior to, and on the run up to the day, to make sure the café was a success.” Paul adds.

Falcon Mews, Robin’s View and L’uccello Café launches in Birmingham.

Paul adds: “Falcon Mews is on ground and first floors, with eleven self-contained flats. There is also lots of communal space including two large living rooms and a beautiful garden and sitting out area. This is a Supported Living Plus service, with the ‘plus’ being the generous array of communal space.

This concept has been designed to support people with higher levels of needs and who would also benefit from this balance of personal and shared space, on their journey towards independence. Falcon Mews sits in the pathway model between residential (Swan Court) and Supported Living (Robin’s View). Robin’s View is a seven flat Supported Living service which has a little less communal space as it encourages a more independent life, with luscious shared gardens throughout.”

Professor Martin Green said: “It’s great to see yet another example of fantastic services being developed by Precious Homes. I think what’s really important to me is that not only do we have amazing buildings, but Precious Homes have a really amazing philosophy about their care and support. This is about giving people a life, not a service. It’s about giving people the opportunities to have a good quality life. It’s so clear to see when you go to Precious Homes’ services that they are people’s homes and people are really defining what goes on in them. I feel very privileged to be here to do the oicial opening of what I know is going to be a great home for people.”

Mitesh Dhanak, Managing Director of Precious Homes, said: “I would like to thank Martin and everyone who attended today; most especially the team behind the services here in Birmingham. A lot of hard work, time and eort have gone into making these services as amazing in reality as they were in vision. A huge thank you to the whole team.”

Manager Marcelo Moreira explains: “Everyone who knows Kris understands how much he loves his superheroes and a long term dream of his has been to go to the cinema and watch some of his heroes in action.”

For Kris, who has autism, watching a film for over an hour and a half has in the past been a real personal challenge.Marcelo explains: “Kris has lots of energy and likes to have lots of changes in activities. Sitting through a full length film and being able to engage for that long on one activity was not previously possible.”

Over the past few months, Kris has been supported by his Key Worker Javid to increase his length of engagement in activities and decrease his anxieties. This has empowered and enabled Kris to engage for longer periods and work up to a trip to the cinema to put his new skills into action!

Marcelo adds: “Kris watched a 3D film with one of his favourite heroes, the miraculous Spider-Man. Kris enjoyed the whole film with popcorn and coca-cola. Just before heading home, Kris went to one of his favourite spots to see the aeroplanes.”

A lovely way to round o a perfect trip - Well done Kris and Javid!

Kris Narborough who lives at Ulysses House in Birmingham has achieved a fantastic personal achievement of going to the cinema to watch one of his favourite superheroes in a full length feature film for the first time!
