AutoCAD courses at EKGTA A u t o D e s k A u t h o r i s e d Training Centres (ATCs) provide the best way for beginners and experts alike to get up to speed.

Find out about the latest productivity features, learn best practices and develop the skills you need to make the most of your AutoDesk software. Get the greatest return on your investment, faster; by building your knowledge in the areas you need the most. EKGTA is one of only 5 ATCs in Scotland. At EKGTA, you’ll learn from a highly qualified instructor at our superior facility. We base our training on AutoDesk recommended course descriptions and have the added advantage of using AutoDesk Official Training Courseware materials. Quality distinguishes AutoDesk ATC from other training providers. ATC instructors are required to meet strict criteria by AutoDesk in relation to product knowledge and software expertise to ensure that your training experience exceeds expectations. Facilities are of the highest standard so you enjoy a comfortable classroom setting with a workstation dedicated solely to you. Our courses are limited to 6 delegates so you get more individual time with your instructor. Our instructor is busy preparing for the latest release of software (2016) so it’s a good time to think about upgrading your skills.

Also now available at EKGTA are three units from the Performing Engineering Operations suite of qualifications. These units are PEO2/004 Producing mechanical engineering drawings using a CAD system and PEO2/061 Producing CAD models (drawings) using a CAD system. These are Nationally recognised units from EMTA Awards Ltd at SVQ level 2 and are available as part of the foundation training for Modern Apprenticeships. The units can also be taken separately by anyone interested in learning CAD. Unlike other providers who are not AutoDesk accredited, our trainees are able to access the very latest industrial software while working towards this qualification. In general terms, trainees could expect to take around 2 weeks to complete each unit including building the required portfolio of evidence. As with all technology CAD development has not stood still, if your skills are rusty, why not take the advantage of our refresher courses, where you can upgrade your knowledge and skills using the most up-to-date software. EKGTA are now taking bookings for all AutoDesk 2016 products. Why not ask about our short taster sessions? Just give Jim Holmes a call on, 01355 229985 or alternatively, to view our scheduled courses and outlines please visit our web site www.ekgta.com

Foundation Apprenticeships

Readers of the last edition wi l l rec al l th at th e Association is currently involved in the Scottish Governments Foundation apprenticeships pilot project b e i n g d e v e l o p e d i n partnership with local a u t h o r i t i e s , s c h o o l s , learning providers and industry to create better

links between education and local employers. Its aim is to provide more flexibility in the senior phase of secondary education, foundation apprenticeships will support more young people to achieve their full potential. They will get earlier exposure to the world of work meaning they should leave school with the skills, knowledge and experience that employers are looking for. EKGTA has been working in partnership with Glasgow Clyde College since August 2015 on a pilot Foundation Apprenticeship programme. The Association is linked with 3 schools from South Lanarkshire and 2 schools from North Lanarkshire with a total of 16 pupils each from both Council areas offered a place on the programme. At present the programme has a total of 20 pupils from Calderglen, Duncanrig and St Andrews & St Brides in South Lanarkshire, Dalziel and Our Ladies in North Lanarkshire attending the centre. The pupils attend two half days per week on a Day Release basis for the Academic programme. Over the two years of the programme this should enable the pupils to obtain a National Certificate Award in Manufacturing Engineering.

The practical element of the programme saw the pupils giving up their school week holiday in October to commence their SVQ Level 2 qualification called Performing Engineering Operations. Pupils will need to complete the remainder of this element of the course in their own time, by attending the centre during school holidays. The intention is that each pupil attends the centre for a total of 14 weeks training over the two years. At the time of writing the course is going well and all the staff involved have commented on the dedication and application of the pupils. Ultimately when the programme is complete in 2017 all pupils will be given the opportunity to apply for the apprenticeship vacancies within the Associations member companies. We believe that with the t ra in i ng s ki l l s a nd knowledge the pupils will have gained should make them a potentially valuable asset to those companies. We will keep all companies informed of the progress meantime if you would like any more information on the pupils and their programme . Meet the Parents As a part of our commitment to the development of young people EKGTA holds an annual Open Evening. We invite the parents and company representatives of all employed trainees to this event, to inform them of the programme being undertaken by the trainees. The latest of these events took place at the Training Centre on two separate evenings the first took place on the 23rd of September 2015. A total of 54 parents and representatives of 8 companies attended this event. The second open evening took place on the 30th of September 2015 and a total of 19 parents and representatives of 3 companies attended this event evening. Over the two evenings EKGTA played host to no fewer than 73 parents and 11 companies. The main focus of these events is intended to showcase and demonstrate the Associations commitment to the development of the individual trainees. They start off with presentations by key members of staff. Tom McBrearty the General Manager introduces the Association and its services / standards. Derek Syme the Training Workshop Manager focuses on the Foundation Training programme, the group project, and the requirements of the awarding bodies. Mr Raymond Lyon Head of Engineering at Glasgow Clyde College spoke on the Academic requirement of the Apprenticeship and the partnership approach between the College and the Association. Jim Lewars one of the Training Advisors concentrates on the SVQ Level 3 and the in-company monitoring and assessment of trainees. The presentations are followed by a short tour of the centre when parents are able to meet members of the Instructional Team. The evening concludes with a short question and answer session in which parents are encouraged to seek clarification on any issues relevant to their son / daughter.

As stated earlier the events are also open to representatives of all companies who have apprentices at the Centre, and this gives the parents the opportunity to talk directly to the employer. The evening events were extremely well received and many positive comments were forthcoming from the parents and company representatives. If you have comment relating to the Open Evening or any other matter relating to the Apprenticeship training programme please contact: Derek Syme Training Workshop Manager, on 01355 229985 or e-mail [email protected].

EKGTA Forklift Training Courses In response to our cl i ent s n ee ds EKGTA now offers a wide range of courses providing Forklift training for operators and managers.

T a k i n g t h e decision to venture into this field is obviously based on sound business intelligence but it’s

about more than just delivering a course, and in true EKGTA style, much time and effort has gone into developing all aspects of these courses.

All our instructors are registered with the Road Transport Industry Training Board (RTITB) and from the initial on-site survey to the quality documentation presented on successful completion, the whole Forklift Training suite of courses follows the renowned quality style of EKGTA courses.

There is a full complement of courses available, from novice courses for new operators to refresher courses for experienced operators. The courses also cover a wide range of trucks including, Flatbed, Reach and Pallet Trucks.

There is also a course to help supervisors and managers of

Forklift operators to ensure they know their duties and responsibilities.

Initially all the training has been conducted on the client’s premises and these clients are benefiting from our attention to customer needs. We also now offer ‘Open Course’ within the training centre and these are proving popular with our smaller client companies, who struggle to release their vehicles for training purposes.

All courses are designed to enable the participants to: 1. Operate a specific lift truck safely and efficiently

2. Demonstrate extensive knowledge of the fork lift truck, and it's limits

3. Conduct load and environmental assessments

The courses finish with a practical operating test and a theoretical safe working knowledge examination. The operating license and course certificate are only awarded to candidates who are successful in both of these elements.

EKGTA has recently tested and certified Forklift Driver Operators for companies such as Weir Pumps Ltd, Bardyke Chemicals and Anderside Tools.

If you are interested in or would like further information regarding the above courses: Contact Derek Syme 01355 229985 or e-mail [email protected] or visit the courses section of our website at www.ekgta.com

“Your Association needs you” Over the past 5 years the Association has gone from ‘strength to strength’ The number of member companies last year was the highest ever on record, with a total of 71 companies joining / re-joining. Without the continued support of our members the Association would cease to exist. With this in mind it is almost that time of year again when all Member Companies of our Association will be receiving a visit from their friendly EKGTA Training Advisor (So get the coffee and biscuits ready). The representatives of member companies should be aware that the continual success and growth of EKGTA is dependant on a strong and active Membership and customer base. We hope that all current Members will take the decision to rejoin this year and that other client companies identified as potential members can be encouraged to join the Association as members for the benefit of all concerned. Membership visits will focus on:- Recruitment, Advice/Guidance,, Training Services, Health & Safety Information and other matters relevant to Member companies.

If you are interested in or would like further information on the benefits of Membership of the Association contact Brian Boyle 01355 229985 or e-mail [email protected]
