NGUNYAWAYITI NGADLUKU NGARTU-ITY

On Friday 30 October, six students from the Primary school were fortunate to attend the Ngunyawayiti Ngadluku Ngartu-ity (Children’s Celebration) at Tauondi College, Port Adelaide. The girls participated in a variety of indigenous cultural activities. Their reflections can be found below.

Students’ Reflections

The boomerang and spear throwing was fun but it was very hard to throw them. The spear was heavy. It was made of wood with a metal point. We had to throw it with one hand, straight ahead at the wooden animal targets. I got one spear close to the wombat. The boomerangs were quite easy to use because they were light. You aim the boomerang at the sky. Boomerangs come back if you throw them properly. A lady painted with spray paint. The picture was a sun coming up over the water. Alexis A’Hang 1DS

We threw the boomerang really high and it landed nearly next to a kangaroo. We had lunch. I had a strawberry and a rollup. Then we went to do art. We shook the spray paint and we heard a jingling sound. After that we looked at the Aboriginal plants. It was a good day. Hannah Mitchell 1CL

We did spear throwing. I threw mine and it hit the face of the wombat statue. The spears were sharp. On my next throw, the spear almost reached another animal. We also learnt ‘nina marni’ which means welcome in my language. We also played a game called ‘Heads and Toes and Knees’. We had lots of fun. Skye-Laura Christensen 1CL

On Friday 30 October the Indigenous girls from the Primary school at SAC went to Tauondi College. First we had a cultural language session with Jack. He taught us the Aboriginal language. For example, ‘wandji’ means lie down, ‘tikka’ means sit down and ‘kurri kurri’ means stand up. We played ‘Heads, shoulders, knees and toes’ using the Aboriginal language. Even the parents and teachers played. Later we went to the boomerang and spear throwing station. You must throw a boomerang straight with the flat side on the outside. If you don’t hold it straight it will not fly properly. The boomerang will only come back when you throw it against the wind. Throwing the spears was really cool because we nearly hit the animal targets. Monttana Christensen 6LM & Mya A’Hang 5JA

It was very nice to meet new people and people I have met before from last year and the year before. I can’t wait to go next year. I’m looking forward to going to the Botanic Gardens to meet Ernie Dingo and the people I have met at these events to see them again. Maja Tongerie 7SS

REMEMBRANCE DAY

On Wednesday 11 November the students of 10 EH represented St Aloysius College at the Remembrance Day Ceremony at the South Australian National War Memorial on North Terrace.

At the Remembrance Day Ceremony our students placed a wreath to honour the 2/43rd Battalion, A.I.F. The 2/43rd was raised in South Australia and few of its members remain alive. The battalion, as part of the Ninth Division A.I.F. fought at Tobruk and El Alamein in North Africa and after returning to Australia in 1943, fought in Papua-New Guinea and Malaysia.

In 2012 the memorial crosses of the 2/43rd Battalion, A.I.F were blessed in a ceremony at SAC and placed into our hands for safe-keeping. These small crosses, over two hundred of them, are in memory of the members of the battalion who died while on active service during World War Two. An additional larger cross commemorates the men who have died since the war ended.

These crosses were placed in the Field of Remembrance adjacent to the War Memorial on North Terrace before Remembrance Day by a group of students from 9VC. Bill Corey, one of the last remaining members of the 2/43rd was able to attend the placement of the crosses.

The role of the college is to keep alive the memory of the deeds of the battalion and of the sacrifices its men made in the service of their country.

FOUR TONES - A GREAT WAY TO LEARN HISTORY

On Tuesday 10 November, the Year 10 History class was delighted with an appearance from a South Australian Rock band known as the Four Tones. The Four Tones are a group who experienced their peak of fame in the 1960’s when the era of Rock was slowly emerging. We were lucky enough to hear a variety of songs performed by them and got insight on how the pop culture of the 60’s influenced their style of music. Their acapella styled pieces, along with their well-blended harmonies, was no doubt a highlight of the performance, as well as a good explanation of what life was like when they were teenagers.

Their insight into the lifestyle and society of Australian people in the 1960’s gave us a fuller understanding of the era to help us with our History work. We appreciated the help they gave us in extending ourselves throughout the topic and for performing and answering our questions on such short notice.

SPRING POETRY FESTIVALWe are very proud of Jasmine Dallimore 9NR, whose poem ‘Eleven: Eleven’ was chosen to be included in the 2015 Spring Poetry Anthology, published by the South Australian English Teachers Association (SAETA) and judged in conjunction with the SA Writers Centre. This is an annual competition that selects entries from school students across the state. Adding to this distinction, Jasmine was also announced as the winner of the SA Writers Centre Prize at the recent launch of the publication. Her efforts have earned a year’s worth of mentoring and membership with the centre that will help to develop her impressive literary talents even further. Congratulations Jasmine!

YEAR 8 - BOOK TRAILERS

This term in English, our class has been working on book trailers with the help of Ms Carol Grantham. Before starting, Ms Grantham told us all about how to avoid copyrighted material and how to make a trailer using Movie Maker. We started off by selecting a book and planning out what key points about the book we needed to include. We then found images that related to our book and put them into Movie Maker, along with text describing the story and music to go with it. After making sure that our trailers were perfect, we presented them in front of our class. Everyone’s trailers were outstanding and it was nice to see that a variety of books had been used.We loved making the book trailers because many of us had never done something like this before. Thank you to Ms Julie Barletta and Ms Grantham for all their help to make our trailers the best they could be. Well done 8SB!

DIVALI FESTIVAL

Divali is a festival celebrated by Hindus all around the world. It is the ‘Festival of Lights’. For Divali, many Hindus make special patterns on the ground outside their front doors as sign of welcome. These are called ‘rangoli’ patterns. They are bright and colourful and are made from sand, rice and flowers. Special

lamps called ‘divas’ are also made to celebrate Divali.

Students in 2LS created their own ‘rangoli’ designs in the Dunlevie courtyard using coloured chalk.

MOVE IT MONDAY!

Move it Monday is a physical activity program for Reception to Year 2 students run by a group of our Year 6 and 7 students in Terms 2-4.

The Move it Monday sports leaders have taught the girls a range of skills including running, throwing, catching, skipping, balancing and teamwork!

The Move it Monday crew organised a roster so that every class had at least one Lunchtime session in the McAuley Auditorium. We set up the activities ourselves, developing important organisational and leadership skills.

There were a lot of positive outcomes from Move it Monday and there was lots of fun had by all. We hope that the program will help to encourage our students to be active and stay healthy!

This term as part of the Year 5 Physical Education program we have had two classes participate in tennis lessons. With the assistance of a professional tennis coach, Marcus Wagstaff from Peak Performance Tennis, the girls have learnt the fundamentals of tennis while playing fun games. The improvement over the four weeks was really pleasing and hopefully many of the girls will be inspired to continue playing tennis in the future for the school.
