Newsletter Term 2 - Week 6, May 26th 2017
Dear Families,
Welcome to this week’s newsletter.
We have celebrated an amazing Education Week at HWPS. Colourful displays of student learning and upcoming school events adorned the learning spaces and community boards. The school looked fabulous.
On Tuesday, our learning communities were humming with much chatter and laughter as visiting mums, dads, grandparents and special friends joined their children and grandchildren in exploring different mindfulness activities. The basketball court was also a hive of activity as children joined teachers in active heart pumping exercises and coordination activities. We would like to thank all our HWPS families who helped us celebrate Our Healthy Mind / Healthy Body Open Morning - your children do love having you visit our school.
On Thursday, we welcomed prospective 2018 families to the school. Our visitors were entertained by the Junior and Senior Choirs, our Rock Band and the school aerobics team. Grade 5 students Ruari, Demi, Charlie and Nandini and their Foundation Friends Chiara, Olive, Gregory and Phoebe proudly shared ‘what they love’ about our school. The Grade 6 leaders conducted informative tours with small groups of parents, introducing them to the different learning communities and programs at Hawthorn West. We have had lovely feedback from our visitors who commented on the warm, welcoming and engaging learning environment at HWPS and commended our school leaders on the interesting tours they conducted
A sincere thank you and well done to our staff members for planning this year’s Education Week festivities, our amazing students for their inspirational learning, enthusiasm and passion shown towards their learning and our extremely supportive parents who continually assist the staff and the children with every aspect of our school – well done and congratulations everyone!
School Disco
Friday 2nd June is a special evening in the Hawthorn West calendar - our school disco. Our students are busy choosing outfits and fine-tuning dance
moves in preparation for this exciting event. Amazing glow products will light the night and water bottles are a must!
We are all looking forward to a fun night of music and dancing!!
Tweachers
At lunch-times you will often see older students in their fluoro vests organising games and activities for the younger students under supervision of the yard duty teachers. This is a great opportunity for our Grade 5’s to further develop their leadership skills. We acknowledge and thank them for their willingness to give up their own play time to enrich the lunch-time play experiences of our Foundation to Grade 2 students.
A Surprise Visitor to Hawthorn West
Last Friday we were very privileged to have a well- known Australian sports woman visit our school. Lisa Alexander, head coach of the Australia national netball team, spent the morning with our Grade 5/6 netball players providing them with coaching tips and running training drills. Further information about Lisa’s visit can be found later in the newsletter.
Congratulations to:
Our Cross Country team who competed with energy & enthusiasm and demonstrated great sportsmanship
Our Grade 6 leaders for their thorough preparation, confident and articulate presentations and enthusiastic and welcoming approach to meeting and greeting visiting families.
Congratulations to Fred S in 5/6M who won second prize in the recent Shutter Speed Photo Competition run by the Boroondara Libraries.
Warm Regards,
Glenys and Justine

At HWPS we care. We are safe, responsible, honest, respectful and ready to learn.
Medications: From time to time students need dosages of medication at/during school. Schools are not allowed to administer med-ications without parents’ explicit, written permission, and without written dosages detailed. Schools do not keep paracetamol or any medication on site, to administer to students. Only water or saline can be used on a wound;
only water, ice and/or monitoring can be undertaken for an illness or injury.
It is expected that an adult bring the completed form and any medication to school, and hand it to a staff member at the office or support staff. Thank you for your support.
On the 19th May, the Grade 5/6 Interschool sport (ISS)
netball teams were surprised by a special guest that Nick
had organised for us. Can you guess who? She has been
playing netball since she was 10 years old and is still play-
ing now in her 50s. She is the coach for the Australian Dia-
monds. Why, it’s Lisa Alexander of course!
Lisa has been surrounded by Netball for 43 years, but she
has also worked as a teacher. She told us that “A teacher
can be a great coach and a coach can be a great teacher.”
This is encouraging for our ISS coaches. Thank you for
being there for us.
Overall it was a great opportunity for experienced netball
and beginner netballers to train with a professional coach.
We learned a lot of strategies and now feel ready to
compete against the other schools in the Kew District.
Thank you Lisa.

Disco fever is in the air……………
Dancing is thirsty work and in our efforts to REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE, we would like all children to bring along their own labelled drink bottle on the night. We will have water dispensers available in the hall so that the children will be able to refill their drink bottles if they need to.
There will not be any food available at the disco so please ensure your children have something to eat before hand.
Children can be dropped off by signing in, and picked up by signing out at the end of their session time.
Disco will be fully supervised throughout the night.
(Parents are welcome to stay if they would like to)
The Hall will be dark as we will be having disco lights so please prepare your children especially the foundation kids.
We look forward to seeing the kids under the mirror ball…………
