Appleton Carvers Receive DonationsThe Appleton Carving Group that meets on Fridays at the Thompson Center on Lourdes received a donation from the estate of a woodcarver. In addition to basswood funds were made available to enable this group to purchase a bandsaw and dust collector. The group is active and growing with 15-20 people meeting regularly on Friday mornings.

Friendship Cane for 2020 ShowOur Friendship Cane blocks are ready for you to pick up for carving and woodburning!

This is a BIG fundraiser for our club with lots of Show attendees buying tickets for this prize. Our goal is to create two canes which means we need 30-40 finished blocks; the more the merrier.

Each year club members, who are able, pick up a rectangular basswood block (there is no fee or charge for the block). The block is carved or woodburned and returned by the March meeting. The blocks are then assembled onto a dowel to make a Friendship Cane which is raffled off at our Annual Show Bucket Raffle. There are three types of blocks. Most of the blocks are 2" x 2" x 4" or 6", and these make up the bulk of the carvings. Each cane (Our goal is at least two) has a single holed 2" x 2" x 6" base (which is typically woodturned), and a similar top.

To spur your imagination one cane will have a theme: The 2020 theme is: "Animal Crackers".The other Cane is "Carver's Choice". Any design in good taste is welcome to produce an eclectic potpourri of art.

Animal Crackers Theme Ideas:

Circus Animals: Lions, Tigers, Bears, Oh My! Elephants, Performing Seals, Gorillas, Monkeys, Apes.

January Club Report

January 5th Board Meeting Highlights

The Board authorized purchase of 600 ribbons for our show competitions 200 each blue, red and white plus additional Best of Class ribbons. The Board also authorized purchase of two table skirts and two runners for use on Mid-Wis. Chipper club tables.

6 of

The meeting opened shortly after 1:30 with Tim Gosz going right to the presentation by Buzz from Woodcraft (see below). After Buzz's presentation the Treasurer's report was read. Ahmed Pima asked for interest in placing a new club shirt order (see below), and at least six people expressed interest. That is enough for an order, but there is a $25 small order charge for orders under a dozen shirts total. An informational table had forms for signing up for Betsy Popp's Pygmy Owl class, Jan Jensen's Chip Carving Class, Rich Wetherbee's Caricature Carving Class, and a Dust Collector Class.

Kieth Melzer shows the green winged teal he made in the class he taught with Dick Christensen. It was a challenging project.

Barb Behm's pyrography leather bookmarks show how the same basic patterns may developed in varying esthetics. Coloring with acrylic paints or colored pencils work well to enhance the burned leather designs.

"Finishes" Presentation by Buzz from Woodcraft of Appleton

Buzz's presentation featured many products from General Finishes a great Wisconsin company located in East Troy. Fine Woodworking magazine named their water based High Performance finish " the best overall finish." Buzz noted that water based finishes are neutral in tone whereas oil based finished will impart a hue. He used this in a fish & water plant carving where the oil based Arm-R-Seal was used on the fish and water based High Performance on the plants to make it seem as though the fish & plants were carved from two different pieces of wood.

Buzz noted that Woodcraft has many different colors of milk paint and that oil based finishes when dry are safe for food contact. He also showed Howard's Butcher block conditioner which is mineral oil based and a wood bowl finish. Buzz recommended oil based gel stains like the Prairie Wheat for use on pine wood which can have problems taking up stain uniformly. The Bloxygen product is used to displace air in opened oil finishes for longer life.

The Annual Kruegers Hardware Carving DayThis annual club event will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Kruegers True Value Hardware Store, 999 Winneconne Avenue, Neenah, Wisconsin.

Each year our club gathers at Kruegers Hardware for a "Carving Day". Kruegers typically sets up cafeteria style tables and club members work on their carvings, display their art and answer questions from Krueger customers about carving. This is a way to promote our club and carving to the public. There are no club sales of tools. It is a low key, fun time for all involved. During the year, Kruegers also sets up a table or two on Wednesday afternoons for carvers to work and have the fun of talking about carving to the occasionally surprized customers. On the Annual Day in March, Krueger provides a submarine sandwich lunch and sometimes they advertise the carving event. Sign up for this event at the January & February club meetings. Kruegers will need a head count for table set up and food. There are typically ten tables or so set up with many Chippers taking part in this event.

Thanks to Paul Wolters for setting up this year's event with Kruegers Hardware.

Learn how to get a sharp tool with stones and with power, and also learn various techniques that will make sharpening easier. Denny Neubauer has sharpened tens of thousands of tools and has used many different sharpening systems. He has taught many carvers how to get a sharp tool whether knife, v-tool, gouge or whatever, and he will show you how to sharpen your tools. Also, if you have problems with your own sharpener, whether a Tormex, a Burke, a grinder, a sharpening stone, or a homemade contraption and want help, then bring it along and Denny will show you how to use it and solve your sharpening problems. Denny will also have sharpening equipment for teaching you as well.

Denny Neubauer is the founder of Denny Tools and the Denny Knife. Before retiring and selling his business (now known as OCC tools), Denny had made and sharpened tens of thousands of tools, which were sold through a network of over 50 retailers.
